A coordinated attack

Lucas jolted awake with a start, his body responding to an instinct he could not name. In the dimly lit room, he saw a dark figure looming over the bed, brandishing a sharp object. Without a second thought, he threw himself over Emma's body, shielding her from the attacker's vicious blow. The blade pierced his left shoulder with a sickening crunch, causing a scream of agony to escape from his lips.

As the pain radiated through his body, Lucas instinctively used his wounded elbow to knock the intruder away. The man stumbled backwards, but quickly regained his footing. He lunged forward again, determined to finish what he had started. Lucas, fueled by a primal need to protect his lover, grappled with the man with all his might.
