Chapter 5

Author: North Melon
Jedediah had been feeling down.

It seemed like the universe was conspiring against him. Everything was going wrong. Worse, he ended up in the hospital yesterday.

Looking at the cast on his leg, he let out a deep sigh, trying to calm the frustration bubbling inside him.

Bored, he scrolled through his phone until a message popped up.

Gigi: [I heard you were in the hospital? What happened? Is it serious?]

Just thinking about her gentle demeanor made him smile. He felt a little better, quickly typing a reply: [I hurt my leg. Have to stay in the hospital for a few days.]

As expected, Georgia offered some comforting words. Jedediah appreciated her kindness, and soon, he found himself typing more than he intended.

Jedediah: [It's a shame. I was supposed to go to Elisugate next week for a competition.]

Jedediah: [Can't go now. I don't know if our school will win.]

Jedediah: [I couldn't sleep last night. Didn't fall asleep until 5 AM. I'm so tired.]

Jedediah: [And the hospital food? Lol, it's worse than the cafeteria at school.]

He rambled on, hoping Georgia would keep him company and ease the gloom in his heart. But he noticed that her replies were getting slower, her words more perfunctory.

Eventually, the conversation ended with a simple: [Rest well.]

Jedediah felt even more irritated. Suddenly, he realized that Georgia wasn't as great as he'd imagined.

Then his mind wandered to me. If it had been me, we would have had a much more engaging conversation.

I always knew how to make him laugh, and I had a sense of timing. Conversations with me were always easy and carefree, making him happy.

Although he'd added me as a friend by mistake, he didn't regret it that much.

Sitting on the hospital bed, he nurtured all sorts of thoughts.

Maybe it was the loud snoring from the old man in the next bed or just his own restless mind, but Jedediah felt an urgent need to talk to someone.

Without thinking, he opened the chat with me.

He typed cautiously: [Are you there?]

A second later, a red dot appeared, followed by the prompt: [You haven't added her as a friend yet.]

Jedediah clenched his phone, while I looked at Georgia's latest post, bursting into laughter.

The caption read: [Refuse to be an emotional trash can.]

I liked her post, and she started a chat with me.

Gigi: [Ugh, I'm losing interest in my crush.]

She shared her issues with Jedediah, full of disbelief.

Gigi: [So much negative energy. How can anyone be so bad at conversation?]

I teased her a little, and she seemed to cheer up.

Gigi: [I've got a certain guess. Are you Monica Lovell from the Department of Statistics?"

I: [Wow, you figured it out?]

Gigi: [Your nickname gives it away.]

That was true. Only someone like Jedediah, who was a little scatterbrained, would mistake people so easily.

Gigi: [I heard you've been close to Bruno Johnson lately.]

I: [Yeah, I'm chasing him.]

Recently, I had been visiting Bruno a lot—sometimes bringing him water, other times taking pictures of him. I didn't hide it, and plenty of people had noticed.

Gigi: [Maybe you should find someone else?]

I: [Why?]

Georgia paused, then sent a long message: [I heard that he has some psychological issues. My friend's roommate saw him by the lake one night, killing a cat.]

I was shocked.

Over the past year, there had been several reports of dead cats turning up on campus. But the person responsible was careful—always choosing areas with few people, using blind spots where the cameras couldn't catch him, and never leaving any trace.

I wondered if Bruno was really the culprit, but things didn't add up.

I: [Are you sure it was him?]

Gigi: [There's no solid evidence. That night, it was dark, and she only saw him crouching by the dead cat. She didn't see him do it, but he's still a prime suspect. You should be careful and keep your distance from him.]

Georgia was being kind, so I didn't argue with her. Instead, I replied with a few simple words and exited the chat.

Then my eyes caught the barrage of comments.

"Why?" I asked, a little surprised. "Aren't you...""I realized we weren't a good match," Georgia said, winking at me. "When I was with him, I was always unhappy. Plus, I'm moving to Elisugate, and Jedediah wants to stay here. We just don't see eye to eye. I can't stay for him. I need to focus on my career.""Elisugate?" I paused, suddenly realizing something. "Wait, does that mean...""Yeah!" She grinned, holding up her phone to show me the offer. "I got the editorial position at the publishing house I've always dreamed of."I genuinely felt happy for her.Above our heads, the barrage of comments flooded in.[Georgia is so cool.][Now this is a real ladies' story.][Jedediah must be crying in the bathroom.]Georgia remembered something, leaning in closer. "By the way, did you hear about Brady?"I shook my head, and she continued, "I heard he dropped out and has been up to no good at home. He went after the stray cats in the neighborhood. Someone saw it, and when he tried to

Bruno's footsteps slowed, and he walked quietly beside me."I was scared they would divorce," I continued, smiling bitterly. "So, I tried everything to please them. When they argued, I told jokes to ease the tension. When my mom cried, I wiped her tears. When my dad slammed the door, I ran after him."The streetlight stretched my shadow long. I stared at the blurred outline as I added, "Later, I realized that as long as I acted happy and thoughtful enough, they would temporarily make up. Over time, it became a habit."Bruno reached out and grabbed my wrist. His warm touch made me flinch slightly."The doctor says it's a people-pleasing personality," I said, looking up at him. "Funny, isn't it? On the surface, it looks like I'm emotionally rich, but deep down, I lack security."At the artificial lake, he stopped, turning to face me."It's not funny," he said softly, but firmly. "You're very brave."The moonlight spilled across the lake, shimmering in his deep eyes. I had never se

But the comments below took me by surprise. My fingers trembled slightly as I scrolled down the screen.[Monica is such a kind person. Last semester, I was struggling with failing a class and almost fell into depression. She stayed with me, chatting and comforting me everyday.][I'm in my senior year, and when the pressure of grad school exams was overwhelming, Monica sent me goodnight voice messages for two months.][Ha, calling her crazy? Does anyone believe that cat abuser?]A bunch of familiar usernames popped up in the comments. These were people I had once comforted online.[Last month, I was heartbroken after breaking up with my boyfriend. It was Monica who answered my call at 3 AM. I've got screenshots as proof.][She patiently comforted me, even though we didn't know each other.]I felt a sudden warmth in my eyes. All those late-night voice messages and those casual words of comfort were remembered after all. Then a message from Georgia popped up: [Mona, I chewed out

Bruno looked at me helplessly."Are you always like this?""What do you mean?""You like to talk nonsense.""I'm telling the truth, and I don't always do this. I've only ever said these things to anyone before."Bruno gazed at me for a while, then looked away. I looked up at the sky.The air between us suddenly became awkward, but strangely, a little ambiguous. The barrage flickered just then.[They're so lovey-dovey.][Why don't you two just get together already? The play between Jedediah and Georgia is lackluster, giving me heartburn.][Georgia is fine, but Jedediah? I've never seen such a personality-less guy.][Why not switch him? Bruno seems like a better choice.][Give it up. Clearly, he has no interest in Georgia. Can't you see his eyes are practically glued to Monica?]I turned my head, shifting under Bruno's stare."What's wrong?""I'm just thinking.""About what?""You gave me a love letter once. I casually tossed it in my dorm, and now I'm going to find it."

"It won't hurt for long," Brady murmured as he pulled a string from his pocket and skillfully wrapped it around his fingers.Suddenly, the door to the equipment room burst open. Before he could react, a figure lunged at him, slamming him to the ground. He cried out in pain as the back of his head hit the floor. Darkness swirled before his eyes. The backpack was ripped open, and the kitten was quickly scooped up and taken away.Brady struggled to raise his head, finally seeing the person on top of him—Bruno."It's you!" His pupils contracted, and then he yelled, "Get the hell off me!"Bruno looked daggers at Brady, one hand pressing hard on Brady's shoulder. His other hand pulled out his phone, and the screen lit up with the recording interface.Brady's face drained of color. "Y-You've been stalking me?"His voice trembled, and then his anger flared again. "Let go of me!"Bruno only tightened his grip, and Brady gritted his teeth in pain. His curses were cut short by a punch, a

Bruno added, "H-He might hurt you."My eyes widened, and I blurted out, "You know about him abusing cats?"Bruno furrowed his brows. "How do you know he..."He met my gaze and fell silent. Then he said, "I've been investigating him for a long time. It took a while, but I finally confirmed it was him."I studied his expression, then tentatively asked, "Bruno, can I ask you something?""What is it?""Someone said they saw you abusing a cat by the lake. What happened there?"He fell silent, and I began to question whether I was being too forward. Then he replied, "That night, I was coming back from outside. As I passed by the lake, I heard a cat's scream. It was short, and I wondered if I had heard it wrong. I followed the sound and found a little cow cat, only two or three months old, had its neck twisted."He paused and added, "I squatted down, trying to save it, but a girl came over. She screamed and ran away. And you know the rest."I could barely keep calm. "Did you not try
