ログインZara
Elizabeth dropped a cappuccino on my desk before I’d even logged in.
“How was the dinner?”
“Complicated.”
“How complicated?”
“A woman showed up claiming to be his fiancee.”
She choked on her coffee. “What?”
“It was some arrangement his mother had with made with her friend when they were kids.”
“What did he do about it?”
“He sent her way. But she refused to leave him. She insisted on seeing him. So he stood up to deal with it, and I just—“I shrugged. “Walked over. Took his hand. Told her I was his girlfriend.”
Elizabeth stared at me, cappuccino frozen half way to her mouth. “You did what?”
“I don’t know. It just happened.”
“Zara, that’s insane.” She set her cup down and leaned forward, grinning. “That’s the most badass thing I’ve heard you do since you told off your old landlord. How did he react?”
“Relieved. Grateful. Like I’d handed him something he didn’t know he needed.”
“You like him.”
“I don’t know him enough to like him.”
“You like him, Zara.”
I don’t say anything. Which is an answer she needs. She reads my silences better than most people read full sentences.
“He seems nice,” she said. “Genuinely nice. Not rich person nice, where everyone’s dazzled by the luxury life and forget the person underneath all that.”
“Yeah. He does.”
“I’m proud of you, for taking a leap on something insane.”
“It’s just a contract.”
“It wouldn’t be like it in the end.”
I don’t argue.
The factory moved through its usual mid morning rhythms—keyboard clicking, someone laughing near the machines, a phone ringing twice before someone finally answered it.
“So what happens now?” Elizabeth asked. “You just wait for another dinner date?”
“I don’t know,” I said. “Oliver hasn’t sent me a message since then. And I have to move into his house by the weekend.”
“Are you nervous?”
“Terrified. But also kind of—-“ I didn’t finish the sentence, because I didn’t have a word for it yet.
My phone buzzed. It was Oliver:
Good day, Zara.
You will be moving in with Mr Cassian on Sunday at 10:00 am so that you can have enough time to settle in. Mr Cassian will be picking you up.
If there are any changes, I’ll let you know in advance. Have a pleasant day.
I read it once before Elizabeth snatched my phone from my hands to go through it.
“Can you please give me my phone?”
“How does this Oliver look? Is he as handsome is Mr Cassian?”
“Yoh have a boyfriend Elizabeth. And no, he looks like a worm.”
Elizabeth dropped my phone back on the table.
I picked it up and sent a message to Oliver.
Thank you. I’ll be ready.
“I almost forgot.”
She jumped out of her chair and disappeared.
“What is going on?”
“Wait here,” she said excitedly.
A few seconds later, she returned carting a medium—sized cardboard box, struggling to balance it in bothe hands.
“What is that?”
She carefully placed it on the table before pushing it toward me.
“I was clearing out my apartment for some things that I don’t need and I found this box.”
I look at the box.
“My mum sent them a couple of weeks back.”
Inside the box were notebooks, old photographs, ticket stubs, a tiny jewelry case and a handful of random keepsakes.
“You’ve been keeping all of these?”
She laughed.
“I keep everything. And I know you don’t like holding on to memories because of your past. But I just had a feeling that I should keep this.”
I picked up a polaroid from the box and it was a picture of me and Elizabeth on our first party together in college. I had a great time on that day.
Elizabeth picked another polaroid and burst into laughter.
“Oh my God.”
“What?”
She turned it around.
It was a picture of us during our first year of university.
My hair was in the messiest bun imaginable, and Elizabeth had somehow managed to blink right as the picture was taken.
I laughed really hard.
“We looked exhausted.
“We were exhausted.”
“It was during our very first exams.”
“We lived on instant noodles.”
I picked up another photo.” Do you remember this?”
“The one where you insisted you could swim and you almost drowned. I was so scared on this day, I thought I was going to lose someone else that I love.”
“You are never letting that go are you?” She said laughing.
“I could never.”
“And you are not losing me ever. I will stay with you as long as I live. And our children will continue what we have built.”
“You are the best,” I said, pulling her into a hug.
For the next several minutes we sorted through the box, laughing over old memories we’d almost forgotten.
We had gone through everything and had something to say about every item found in it.
Elizabeth reached for the box and started putting the photographs back inside one by one.
I picked up the picture we took at the beach.
We were both laughing at something outside the frame, completely unaware of the camera. I smiled to myself until something in the background caught my attention.
Just behind us, partially hidden by a row of palm trees, stood a large building.
I frowned.
I didn’t remember seeing it that day.
My thumb brushed over the glossy surface of the photograph as I looked closer.
Three bold letters were fixed to the front of the building.
SSH.
I stared at them for a few seconds.
What does that even mean?
A strange feeling settled in my chest, though I couldn’t explain why.
“Zara?”
Elizabeth’s voice pulled me back.
I blinked, quickly slipping the photograph beneath the others before she noticed what had caught my attention.
“Nothing,” I said, forcing a small smile.
But even after we closed the box, those three letters refused to leave my mind.
SSH…
River I pulled the car to a smooth stop beneath the covered entrance of Maison Étoile. Before I could step out, a valet was already approaching. I handed him the keys without a word before walking around the front of the car. Zara had just opened her door when I reached her. She looked up the building, her gaze slowly taking in the understated elegance of the boutique. There were no oversized logos or glittering displays demanding attention. “You ready?” I asked She smiled. “Of course.” The glass doors slid open before we even got to them. A woman dressed in a tailored back suit stepped forward, her smile warm but impeccably professional. “Good afternoon, Mr. Cassian.” I inclined my head. “Good afternoon.” “We’ve been eagerly waiting for your arrival.” She stepped aside, gesturing us inside. “Everything has been prepared exactly the way you requested.”The boutique was silent. No customers browsed the display. No consultants hurried between appointments. Zara slowed behi
River The penthouse was unusually quiet when I got home. I loosened my tie as I walked through the living room, instinctive glancing towards the kitchen. Empty. I checked the dining area. Still empty. Her bedroom door was slightly open, the lights were switched off. She was at home. I frowned almost imperceptibly. Normally, by this hour, she would either be working on her laptop, making dinner, or talking to herself while wandering around the apartment. Somehow, in the space of weeks, that had become the new normal. Today was just silent. Different even. I set my keys on the console table and slipped my phone from my pocket. No messages. For a brief moment I simply stood there. She was an adult and she had a driver. So she was safe. There was no need for me to worry. I looked at my watch. Nine-thirty. Before I could talk myself out of it, I tapped her contact. The phone rang twice. “Hello?” Zara answered, her voice as bright as ever. “Where are you?” A beat of silenc
Zara The drive into the city’s luxury district took a little over twenty minutes. As the Mercedes slowed to a stop, I found myself staring through the tinted window. Every storefront looked like something out of a magazine. Glass facades starched towards the sky, reflecting the afternoon sun. Luxury cars lined the street, valets moved effortlessly from one vehicle to another, and elegantly dressed shoppers wandered from one boutique to the next carrying glossy shopping bags with names I had only seen online. Gregory stepped out first and opened my door.“I’ll be here whenever you are ready.” I smiled. “Thank you.” Eliza the climbed out beside me and immediately slipped her hand through mine. “You look nervous.” “I’m not nervous.” She looked at me knowingly. “You have been looking around since we got here.” “I’ve never been here before.” “Exactly.” She smiled. “So today, we are fixing that.” Before I could protest, she was already leading me towards the first boutique.
Zara By the end of the week, I had settled into my normal routine. River woke up and went to work most mornings before I did. I worked from the penthouse, and it was very exhausting, I missed my normal life and my best friend. And find myself talking to Herbert whenever I needed a break. Living with River wasn’t nearly as difficult as I’d imagined. He was quiet and unpredictable. Organized to an almost frightening degree. But also considerate in ways he probably didn’t even realize. The times I didn’t abide by the rules, he doesn’t complain. He simply just does it. I want to go to the office today and probably have lunch at my favorite spot. I put on a pair of tennis skirts with a crop pink sweater, my pink sneakers and a packed my hair into a bun. A few moments later, the elevator doors opened onto the lobby. A gentleman I what looks like his early fifties stepped inside just as I stepped out. He paused and offered a warm smile. “Good morning.” “Good morning.” “I don’
River By the time the last board member walked out of the conference room, I felt every minute of the day settle heavily across my shoulders. “Tomorrow at nine, you have the Hendersonville meeting,” my assistant reminded me as she handed over a folder. “I know.” “And your lunch with the Singapore investors.” “I know.” “And your interview with—““I know.”She offered me an apologetic smile before stepping aside. The office slowly emptied around me. Outside the floor to ceiling windows, the city had begun to glow beneath the fading evening sky. Headlights stretched endlessly along the roads below, weaving through traffic like ribbons of light. I loosened my tie as I walked towards the elevator. Oliver caught up with me just before the door closed.“Tough day.” “They usually are.” He grinned. “At least you’ve got something waiting at home now.” I looked at him. He raised both hands.” I’m just saying.” The elevator door slid shut. A few minutes later, I was behind the wh
Zara The smell of fresh linen and the unfamiliar softness of the mattress was the first reminders that I wasn’t in my apartment anymore. I blinked sleep from my eyes and stared at the ceiling. For a brief moment I did not remember where I was until I bent my head to look out the window. Then I remembered I lived in a penthouse. A quiet sigh escaped me as I sat up, pushing the duvet aside m. Sunlight poured through the windows, painting golden streaks across the wooden floor. Today was officially my first day living here. After showering and changing, into a pair of jean shorts and an oversized cream sweater, I tie my hair into a loose ponytail before leaving my room. The hallway was silent. I wondered if River was awake or still asleep. As I reached the kitchen, something caught my attention. A single sheet of paper rested neatly on the marble island. Beside it lay a matte black card like the one he gave me last night. Curiosity got the better part of me. I walked over an
