Zara

By the time dessert was cleared, I was more than ready to leave.

Dinner had been an experience and I had spent most of the evening choosing my words carefully.

I was beginning to understand why River preferred keeping his distance from people.

He pushed his chair back and stood up.

“Excuse me. I need to take this call.”

How mother nodded, while Alfred immediately followed him before he could leave.

I watched him go, wondering how long he intended to leave me to fend for myself.

River I sat in the conference room, listening as the project manager went through the revised figures of the upcoming quarter. “Reduce the projected expenditure by eight percent. And I want the revised proposal on my desk by Thursday. If there are any issues with the timeline, address them now instead of waiting until last minute.” “Understood, sir.” “Good. That’s will be all.” I stood up and went straight to my office. I had barely settled in my chair when the door opened. “Just the person I wanted to see.” I set my pen down. “Where have you been?” “Excuse me?” “You heard me. You are rarely in your office.” “I didn’t realize I had to drop a report on my daily movements.” He said taking a glass and pouring himself some whiskey. “I’ve been here and there, handling a few things. You know, living my life. Unlike you who like to bury yourself in work.” “Well, you are very correct.” “Thank you.” “That aside, there’s something I need to discuss with you and I don’t need you t

I watched him go, wondering how long he intended to leave me to fend for myself. “Zara.” I turned to find Elsa looking at me. “Yes?” “Come with me. I’d like to take you on a tour around the house.” I hesitated. “Oh, that’s all right. You don’t have to do that.” “I know I don’t have to, but I want to.” I glanced towards the doorway River had disappeared into. “Don’t tell me you are afraid of being alone with me.” “No, of course not.” “Good. Then come along, I’ll make it quick.” I remained seated. She sighed dramatically. “Honestly, Zara, I’m not going to bite you or p

Zara Dinner continued but I was beginning to suspect that Margaret had made it her personal mission to make me uncomfortable. Everytime I looked up from my plate, I caught her staring at me. Sometimes, she would quickly joy look away. Other times, she would hold my gaze for a moment before returning to her food. I had no idea what she was looking for, but I hope she wouldn’t find out. I was just reaching for my glass when River’s mother spoke. “So, Zara, how did you meet River?” My hand paused halfway way to the glass. I looked at her wondering whether I had heard correctly. “Sorry?” “How did you meet my son? She repeated, her eyes fixed on me. “I’ve been curious about that.” That was a problem. I wasn’t exactly sure of the story to tell them because I have a lot in my head and I was very well prepared for this. I glanced at River. His expression was calm. He opened his mouth to speak but his mother stopped him before he could say anything. “Let the girl answer.” I too

Zara The car pulled up to the Cassian family residence, and I turned towards the window, taking in the enormous building. The house was impressive, with tall windows, elegant columns. And a wide suitcase leading to the front entrance. Warm lights illuminated the exterior, while the carefully trimmed hedges and perfectly arranged flowers gave the grounds an almost unreal appearance. I had grown up in a house of similar grandeur, so the sight of a sprawling residence with expensive furnishing and an army of staff wasn’t new to me. If anything, it brought back memories that I wouldn’t want to entertain tonight.“Ready?” River asked. “Do I have a choice?” “You could stay in the car.” “Very funny.” He stepped out first, then came around to my side and opened the door for me. I accepted his offered hand and climbed out, smoothing the front of my dress. We walked to the entrance together. He didn’t let go of my hand surprisingly. Before we could reach the front door, it opened from

Zara I stared at my phone, listening to the familiar voice on the other end. “Someone knows about me,” I whispered. “I don’t know how much she knows, but she knows enough to scare me.” “Calm down. You are getting ahead of yourself.” “How am I supposed to calm down? I spent years believing I could live without looking over my shoulders, and now someone has suddenly appeared, reminding me of everything I have been trying to forget.” “I understand that you are frightened, but you need to think clearly. I’ve been keeping a close watch of him through one of his guards. And from what I can see, he isn’t making any moves to find you.” “You can’t be sure of that.” “No, I can’t. But if he were actively looking for you, I would have noticed something by now.” I pressed my free hand against my forehead. “I didn’t think I would be found so soon. It’s just been four years. I haven’t gotten to where I want to be to be able to fight him. I thought I had more time.” “You still have time. No

River “Who is this Mr. Finnely?” I looked up from the document on my desk as the investigator placed a folder in front of me. “He worked for Zara’s father for many years,” he replied. “I managed to speak with him, but he refused to answer my questions. He wasn’t willing to discuss his former employer or his connection to Zara.” I opened the folder and gloves through the papers. “Did you find anything else?” “Yes.” “Then go on.” He took out another document from his bag. “I suspect Zara had a difficult childhood, although I haven’t found anything conclusive, but some of the information I’ve gathered suggest there may be more to her past than we have uncovered.” “What information is that?” “Have you noticed any unusual behavior from her? Nightmares, sudden changes in mood, or scars on her body?” My fingers stilled against the paper. Then I remembered the night Zara was talking in her sleep. She was unwilling to explain what had happened. She insisted that she was fine, but I
