CHAPTER THIRTY NINE

Ten Looks

Aria's POV

The presentation was on a Tuesday.

Jerome had set it himself, which meant it wasn't optional and wasn't informal. He had cleared his entire afternoon, asked Lena to make sure the studio was in order by noon, and sent a single message to the team the night before that said only, Tomorrow we see where we are.

Nobody slept particularly well.

I got to the studio at seven, two hours before anyone else arrived, and stood in front of the ten looks arranged alon

  • Mr. CEO, You Lost Me Too Late   Sunday Morning

CHAPTER FORTY TWOSunday MorningAria's POVHe came on Sunday. Not because anything had happened. Not because anyone had texted him or there was a legal development or a studio crisis or any of the things that had given us reasons to be in the same place over the past two months. He came because it was Sunday and Nina was out with Daniel and I had sent him a message at nine in the morning that said simply are you busy and he had replied no and I had said come over then and he had.He stood in the doorway when I opened it and looked at the space the way he always did when he arrived somewhere, quick and thorough, taking it in before his expression settled. He had been here before but only briefly, only with food and a specific purpose. This was different. This was just Sunday. He came in and I closed the door and he stood in the middle of Nina's living room looking at the evidence of the last two months. The fabric swatches still on the coffee table from yesterday. The notebook on the

  • Mr. CEO, You Lost Me Too Late   Not Fine

CHAPTER FORTY ONENot FineAria's POVI knew by ten in the morning that it was going to be one of those days. Not dangerous. Not the kind that required a call to Dr. Mensah or anyone else. Just hard. The specific kind of hard that pregnancy produces without warning or reason, where your body simply decides it has been cooperative long enough and would like the day off, and doesn't particularly care that you have six weeks to a show and fittings starting at noon.My back had been aching since before I left Nina's. Not the low persistent ache I had learned to manage but something higher and sharper that arrived somewhere between the bus stop and the studio entrance and didn't leave. By ten it had settled into something I could only describe as my entire spine reconsidering its commitment to the project. My feet had swollen enough by midmorning that I had to take my shoes off under the desk, which Adaeze noticed and pretended not to.I had eaten breakfast but my stomach was doing somethi

  • Mr. CEO, You Lost Me Too Late   The Third Party

CHAPTER FORTYThe Third PartyAria's POVThe woman came to the studio on a Wednesday. Not to me directly. She came to the front desk and asked for Jerome, which was the first strange thing, because nobody who actually knew Jerome showed up unannounced and asked for him at the front desk. His assistant turned her away. She left a card. Jerome's assistant brought it to me because the name on the card was one I didn't recognise but the firm was one I did.Hartley and Associates. Margaret's original lawyers. The ones who had held the private arrangement document for eleven years.I called Sandra before I did anything else."Don't speak to her," Sandra said immediately. "Don't let her near you at the studio. She's not there about Jerome. She's there because she knows you're there and she can't come within a hundred metres of you directly.""She sent a third party to my workplace," I said."Yes. And that is a violation of the spirit of the restraining order even if it's technically outside

He had cleared his entire afternoon, asked Lena to make sure the studio was in order by noon, and sent a single message to the team the night before that said only, Tomorrow we see where we are.Nobody slept particularly well.I got to the studio at seven, two hours before anyone else arrived, and stood in front of the ten looks arranged along the wall in the order they would walk. I had done this before, stood alone in front of work I had made, waiting for my own eye to tell me if it was true. In the old days, before everything, before Alex and the marriage and the three years of making myself smaller, I had trusted that eye completely. It had been the most reliable thing about me.I trusted it now.I stood there for forty minutes and looked at all ten of them, one by one and then together, and what I felt was not relief and not pr

  • Mr. CEO, You Lost Me Too Late   The Last Fitting

CHAPTER THIRTY EIGHTThe Last FittingAria's POVBisi delivered the finished dress on a Thursday evening and the three of us, me, Bisi, and Clara, stood around it in Nina's living room like we were looking at something that required a moment of silence before anyone spoke. It was finished. Not in the provisional, almost the way it had been at every previous stage. Finished the way things are finished when every decision along the way turned out to be the right one. The shoulder line clean and certain. The seam down the back doing exactly what I had drawn it to do weeks ago on a scrap of paper in this same room. The cap sleeve that Clara had fought about for three sessions and then surrendered to completely, sitting exactly as it was supposed to on her shoulders."Put it on," Bisi said, before either Clara or I could say anything.Clara changed behind Nina's bedroom door and came out slowly, the way you come out of a room when you are not entirely sure what you are going to find waitin

  • Mr. CEO, You Lost Me Too Late   What Nina's Daniel Found

CHAPTER THIRTY SEVENWhat Nina's Daniel FoundAria's POVI found out about Nina's man the way I found out about most things Nina tried to keep from me, which was by accident while she was looking at her phone and smiling in a way she thought I wasn't watching. His name was Daniel. Not Alex's Daniel. A different Daniel entirely, which I thought was funny but chose not to say out loud because Nina's expressions when she felt teased could be genuinely withering. He worked in media. Editorial, she had said vaguely the one time she mentioned him, in the tone of someone hoping the conversation would move on quickly. It moved on. Until Friday morning.I came out of the bathroom to find Nina at the kitchen table with her laptop open and a look on her face I hadn't seen since the early days of all this, that particular sharpness when she had found something and wasn't sure yet what to do with it."What," I said. She turned the laptop toward me.It was an internal document. Editorial notes from

CHAPTER THIRTY TWOWhat Raymond KnowsAria's POVWe agreed on neutral ground.Sandra's suggestion. She said she wasn't letting either of us walk into a meeting with Raymond Cavendish's lawyer on territory that wasn't ours, so she booked a room at a hotel near the city centre, the kind with meeting

CHAPTER THIRTYThe HearingAria's POVSandra told me I didn't have to come."It's procedural," she said. "You won't be called. You don't need to be in the room.""I want to be in the room.""Aria.""I sat through three years of being told what was happening to my own life by other people, Sandra. I

CHAPTER TWENTY NINEChargedAria's POVSandra called at seven in the morning, which never meant good news and never meant bad news either. It just meant something had happened."They've filed," she said. "Margaret Cavendish has been formally charged. Fraud, falsification of medical records, and two

CHAPTER TWENTY EIGHTClara's Wedding DressAria's POVClara called on a Tuesday and the first thing she said was, "Don't hang up.""Why would I hang up?""Because what I'm about to ask is insane and you have every right to say no and hang up on me."I sat down on the edge of Nina's couch. "Clara, j
