Monica woke up to meet Sly's frame at the door, carrying her work clothes. A beautiful shy smile appeared at the corner of her lips. "Thank you, Darling," she muttered shyly.
Sly had a mischievous smile on his face as he responded, "There are other ways of thanking me baby," he said, leaning in for a kiss after hanging her work clothing. "You are so lucky we have a lot to do in the office if not," Sly pinched Monica's nose playfully, as the latter giggled and snickered to the washroom.
They got ready and went to the dining room for breakfast. The atmosphere tensed at the sight of Dickson, who was already seated with a straight face. Monica greeted him for courtesy's sake, without making eye contact.
"Good morning Monica," Dickson said dryly, before turning to Sly. "Good morning Sly," Dickson said in a humble tone. Sly noticed he was all dressed up. Even with his black eye, he looked presentable.
"Good morning Dickson, going somewhere?" Sly asked col
Monica turned to the sound of the voice, meeting the gaze of a blonde woman with hazel eyes. Her features were very much Similar to Dickson, except for the eye color. Dickson's eyes were as green as Sly's. She was clad in pure silk satin pajamas and looked utterly refined and younger than her age. If Monica couldn't tell by her resemblance to Dickson that this was Sly's mother, she would have graded her no more than thirty, age-wise. She was a petite frame and exhumed an arrogant aura, which made Monica groped and displaced.Comparing this woman to her mum would be a completely impossible task. They had absolutely nothing in common. She could understand what Sly had gone through living with this woman over the years. Whichever way, Monica did not utter a word. It was in Sly's place to introduce her to his family and not the other way round. Sly looked around mockingly and said coldly, "Mum, there are no kids around here so who are you directing all those questions to?"
Mr. Herbert Norman sat at the end of the long dining table. There were no protocols observed at the Normans' lavish dining hall in the villa. Chef Brown exhausted his skills in a variety of western and Eastern breakfast delicacies. With Veronica around, all the maids including Christiana the housekeeper were walking on eggshells. No one wanted to be in Veronica's bad books.Veronica sat at the right side of Mr. Herbert Norman, while Dickson sat on the opposite side of Veronica. Judging from Veronica's casual outfit, she was most probably spending the day at the villa. Sly sat beside his mother, dressed in his suit and looking mesmerizing.Monica was dressed in her office wear, a trouser suit, picked by Sly to complement his attire. Her hair was held up in a ponytail. The couple looked professional, yet attractive. Sly ushered Monica to sit on the chair next to his, instead of the opposite. For Monica to sit opposite Sly meant she would be facing Dickson and S
Sly and Monica arrived in the office by mid-morning. Sly had a solemn expression on his face when he escorted Monica to her office. He was possessed with the urge to kiss her and do many things with her but he resisted, recalling his principle. Instead, he whispered in her ear. "Don't wear yourself out. Reserve enough energy for tonight."His deep voice made Monica blush as she felt her core tighten. "You are so shameless, get to work," she said jokingly, pushing Sly out of the door. Sly instinctively, circled his arm around her, burying his head in the corners of her neck. Monica stiffened. Since Sly returned from his trip, he never showed any form of intimacy in the office. Therefore, Monica felt bizarre. Before she could ask the reason for his behavior, he had trod out of her office. Before Sly entered his office, he noticed James sitting with Barbara. He squinted suspiciously and asked, "Are you here to see me or Barbara?"At the sight of her boss, Barbara t
Monica was unable to discern as to whether or not Sly heard their conversation. Nevertheless, she didn't know why she was trying to play Veronica's game. She could tell Sly about everything but what happens then? What if he gets angry and confronts Veronica? Will she get the peace she has been yearning for by creating a conflict between a mother and son? Yes, they weren't on good terms but she wasn't willing to add more spice to the already sour relationship. With her thoughts in motion, she decided to find a way of dealing with Veronica without using Sly's help. However, she disliked the act of lying to Sly. Guilt covered her face as she looked everywhere except focusing her gaze on Sly. What happened to their promise of no secrets? Well, the fact is, this involves her mother-in-law, whose acceptance she is aiming to boost. She had to act tacitly.Since Barbara was standing close to the door, it was natural for Sly's attention to be on her. He gazed at her skeptically
"I'm sorry Monica, my surprise has been ruined..."Sly disappointedly said, shifting his attention back to Veronica on the phone, "I'll be there in 30 minutes," he murmured and hung up.Monica felt uneasy. "Is everything alright?" She asked Sly who seemed displeased after the phone conversation."It's my mum. She said I need to come home at this instant. She also said it's an emergency," Sly reiterated to Monica.Monica rested the back of her head on the headrest of the car seat, uneasiness dripping over her mien. Her instinct said that something wasn't right. 'Sly's dad is home and should be able to take care of any emergency right?'. "What about your dad?"Sly's gaze was focussed on the road as he uttered, "He went back to London a few hours ago. He will be back in a few days.""I see," Monica muttered uncomfortably.Sly thought she was merely disappointed at the turn of events. "I'm sorry the surprise is ruined but I will make it u
Having realized that the couple was asleep, Veronica finally got onto her feet. It was past midnight and the lights were off. She couldn't turn on the light to cause either of the couple to wake up and decided on going through the dark. She gently opened the washroom door sauntering slowly, but unfortunately, her leg hit the couch. She gasped in pain, the bedside lamp intermittently lit up, with Sly sitting on the bed, staring daggers at her. The room wasn't brightly lit by the bedside lamp but Sly could see Veronica's form. He stood up and ambled towards her, not wanting to disturb Monica's sleep. "We need to talk," Sly whispered, secured his palm around Veronica's arm, and walked her out of the door, through the corridor to her bedroom. Releasing his grip on her, he went to her washroom and turned on the faucet. Coldwater and hot water were all pouring out in huge force. Veronica's face flushed. Sly was agitated. He could see through his mother's plans. She was just bent on ruinin
"Is..is she the Surprise?" Monica stammered. Her voice was almost a screech."Hell No," Sly said to Monica, then turned to his mum, "Mum! What are you doing here?" He uttered, displeased.Veronica was remorseful. One could not tell whether or not she was pretending. Her tone was laced with feigned humility. "I came to beg you to return home, please. You know Monica and I are just getting to know each other," her pleading eyes met Monicas'."Mum, I just want to spend some time with my wife," Sly said defensively."Sly, I know you were angry after what happened last night. If you just wanted to spend a little time together, five-star hotels would have been your option but, you got a penthouse with a closet full of clothes. You moved out of the villa," Veronica pointed out bitterly.Sly knew his mother was right. He didn't intend to return to the villa for as long as his mother continued to live there but under the present circumstance, he needed to w
Monica's insecurities resurfaced at the sight of Veronica. She was in a one-piece suit and appeared to be thirty or less in age. She was beginning to trust Veronica but at this point, she doubt has replaced the trust she so built. She began to regret not agreeing with Sly. Having another intimate moment ruined wasn't an accident, yet, she forced a smile and looked away, swimming to the end of the pool. Veronica purposely ignored Monica, focussing on Sly."Come on, Sly, it's just a coincidence. I've been dying for a swim since I returned. I hope you don't mind if I join you, right?" Veronica said, making herself comfortable at the edge of the pool with her legs in the water."Of course. We were done anyway," Sly said, swimming towards Monica when he heard Veronica's voice. "What happened to us spending time together?" She yelled after him."Yeah, I almost forgot to tell you that, if you want to spend time together, that has to be planned. You can't continue
