Chapter 9 Indifference

Lewis shook his head, stood up, and went to take a cold shower in the bathroom to calm his burning desires.

Meanwhile, Susan, who had been sent out, felt wronged and uneasy. She didn’t know what had made Lewis unhappy.

She cautiously tried to guess what was on Lewis’s mind.

In the hallway, Susan ran into Mia and asked earnestly, "Mia, I can't seem to fall asleep. Could you keep me company and chat for a bit?"

It was late, and Mia wanted to go to rest, but considering that Susan was now Lewis’s woman, she had to muster her energy and said with a smile, “OK.”

"Susan, I have a question for you," Susan began to inquire. “Does Lewis dislike lilies?”

Mia nodded, “Yes, Mr. Lewis hates lilies. They are not allowed in the house at all; not even the scent of lilies, nor even mentioning them.”

Susan realized she had touched upon a huge taboo for Lewis and asked anxiously, “Why?”

“I don’t know,” Mia shrugged. “Anyway, Lewis doesn’t like lilies.”

Knowing this about Lewis, Susan hurried back to her room, threw away all her lily-scented shower gels and perfumes, and took another shower.

Susan felt very annoyed. She didn't want her newfound wealth to slip away because of tonight’s events, did she?

The temptation to be the wife of a CEO, living in a lavish standalone villa, and enjoying the ultimate luxury that she had only just begun to experience for one day - she didn’t want this dream to shatter.

Susan secretly decided, she must make Lewis fall in love with her.

Just then, her phone rang.

It was Judy.

Returning to her apartment and finding Susan gone, Judy had finally decided to call.

Susan hesitated for a moment before answering, “Judy.”

"Susan, where are you? It's so late, and you haven’t come back..."

Before Judy could finish, Susan said, “I’ve moved in with my boyfriend and won’t be coming back.”

After a two-second silence, Judy said, “That’s sudden. I see a lot of your things are still here.”

"I don't need them anymore. You can use what’s useful, or throw away the rest," said Susan, her tone making clear she wanted to set boundaries. “It's late, I'm going to sleep now, we'll talk another day.”

The call ended.

Judy sat in the rental room, staring at the phone that had just been hung up, and at the empty room, and struggled to come to terms with what happened.

She noticed that Susan was reluctant to stay in touch; they had been close friends. How had everything changed in just two days?

Was Susan worried she would get in the way of her pursuit of happiness?

Susan was very frugal and thrifty—she would even save empty delivery boxes to sell for money. Now, moving out, aside from some everyday clothes, she had taken nothing.

Susan seemed like a different person, which made Judy very curious. What kind of boyfriend did Susan have that could enchant her to this extent?

Could it be that she was being controlled by some unsavory character?

Judy was worried and decided to talk it over with Susan the next day.

The next morning, as soon as the alarm rang, Judy got up, got dressed, and as a secretary, she had to make it to the company before 8 am.

In a hurry, Judy left the house and ran into the talkative old lady of the neighborhood.

"You're still staying here?" the nosy neighbor asked Judy. "That Susan who lived with you, the one who's not particularly good-looking, she’s latched onto some rich guy, driven off in a car worth millions, and even got herself an assistant. She didn’t share any of her good fortune with you?"

Judy asked in surprise, "How do you know?"

"I saw Susan moving out yesterday," said the neighbor lady dismissively.

Had Susan really found a wealthy boyfriend?

Judy asked, "Madam, did you take note of the car's license plate number?"

She was determined to find out whether he was a real rich man or just pretending to be wealthy.

If it turned out to be true, and he treated Susan with sincerity, she would be relieved.
