Chapter 4

Author: Moore
Laila and I were twins, but ever since we were kids, she'd always resented me.

She hated sharing her things with me. So she stole our parents' attention, my toys, my dresses—even though she had the exact same ones.

She wanted anything I laid my eyes on.

Back then, Mom and Dad treated us equally. I had everything Laila had, and they often lectured her for taking my things.

But since what had happened five years ago, they poured all their heart and soul into Laila. They thought I was selfish for not visiting Dad when he was hospitalized.

So whenever we got into an argument after that, they always took Laila's side.

"How could you bully your sister?" was what they often told me.

After feuding with her for so many years, I was indeed the one who lost. I could no longer be at odds with her anymore.

"Yeah, you won," I said softly.

The kidney transplant surgery would take place in two hours, and I was about to die.

Given how deep the wolfsbane was already in my system, my soul would also be shattered by the time the Dragonbone scalpel sliced open my body.

What would be left was only my lifeless body.

By then, would Mom, Dad, and Simon weep for me?

Perhaps not. For an eyesore like me to leave, they'd probably be overjoyed. After all, Laila was the apple of their eye.

Before surgery, Mom, Dad, and Simon huddled around Laila, comforting and encouraging her.

"Laila, don't be scared. We'll be waiting for you outside," Dad said in a tone so gentle that I'd never heard before. "The surgery will definitely be successful. You'll become healthy in no time."

"After your recovery, I'll make you your favorite dishes," Mom chimed in lovingly.

Simon suddenly pulled out a dazzling moonstone necklace. "I bought the necklace you fancied at the auction last time. After the surgery, I'll put it on for you!"

They were all so focused on Laila that none of them remembered that I was also about to undergo surgery.

I thought I was used to being neglected. But as I neared the end of my life, the sight before me still broke my heart.

I couldn't help but blurt my thoughts, "Would you be sad if I died during surgery?"

Mom and Dad were stunned. As if they only recalled my existence now, diffidence flickered across their faces.

But once Mom heard what I said, she snapped, "What nonsense are you talking about? It's just a simple kidney transplant surgery. Stop jinxing yourself!"

Dad also shot me a disapproving glance. "Don't say that! How could you curse yourself like that? Get sufficient rest after the surgery, and you'll recover in no time. After all, you're much stronger than Laila."

"I'll cook you a seafood feast after the surgery's over. You love seafood, don't you?"

Gazing at me affectionately, Simon held my hand and said, "Don't worry. I hired the best healer to perform the surgery. You'll definitely be fine. Once it's over, I'll buy whatever you want for you."

Bile rose in my throat. He bought Laila's favorite necklace in advance, yet when it came to me, he'd only make such empty promises.

I bet he'd be delighted after I was gone. He could finally be with Laila.

My gaze lingered on Mom, Dad, and Simon before I entered the operating room.

When the Dragonbone scalpel sliced open my skin, the last shred of healing ability I had was completely destroyed. The wolfsbane gnawed at my bones and tore my soul apart.

I stopped breathing entirely as I reached the end of my life.

The moment before I took my final breath, I wondered if Dad would weep for me if he found out I was the one who donated my kidney to him five years ago, and it was Laila who took the credit. Would he feel bad for me, who was always on the receiving end of Laila's slandering and bullying?

Would Mom and Dad ever regret looking down on me?

It didn't matter. Even if they would, I wouldn't be around to see it.

If there were a next life, I never ever wanted to meet them again.

Mom slapped Laila hard across the face. "How dare you?" she screamed. "Zora's your sister! How could you do that to her?"Laila's hand flew to her swollen cheek. Never in her life had anyone hit her like that. She looked up at Mom, her eyes filled with hatred. "Who gets to decide she's older than me? We're twins! We look exactly the same, so why is she better than me?"Why did everyone love her more? If you only wanted her, then why did you even bother giving birth to me?"Mom stood stunned, speechless. "When did we ever mistreat you? Both your dad and I treated both of you equally. And after we misunderstood Zora, we doted on you even more! What more could you possibly want?""Why should I be satisfied?" Laila retorted. "So what if I had your love? She still had Simon. Why did she deserve an amazing man like him? Even without you two, she still had someone who loved her!"Tugging at her hair, she screamed hysterically, "She should've died! Everything she had should've been m

Pointing at Dad, Simon barked the truth, "One of your kidneys came from Zora. And her other kidney is now in Laila's body! Both of you stole her kidneys and killed her!"Just then, a loud noise drowned out his yell. Laila knocked over her food on the table. She clutched her stomach in panic, trying to divert our parents' attention. "Mom, Dad, my stomach hurts. Hurry up and get Healer Petra here now!"But Mom, who'd always doted on her, stood frozen in place. The color had drained from her face, and she seemed completely oblivious to Laila's situation. "Zora's dead? That's impossible. Are you tricking us on her behalf?"As if she'd suddenly found a loophole, Mom sneered and continued, "If she only had one kidney, why would she agree to donate one to Laila? This must be another one of her lies."And I saw it with my own eyes—Laila has that surgical scar. It can't be faked! But Zora didn't even have a single mark on her."Simon gave her a pitying look. "Even an Omega with weak heal

"Are you saying that Zora only had one kidney to begin with?" Simon quavered. "It seemed like Ms. Zora donated a kidney to someone else in the past," Healer Petra corrected. "That was why she only had one kidney. But by the time we discovered this, she had already died from the poison."So in order not to let her kidney go to waste, we proceeded with the kidney transplant surgery."Looking wronged, Healer Petra continued, "None of you bothered to listen to me earlier. All of you left with the other patient. And since you ordered us not to disturb you, we could only put Ms. Zora in the morgue first."It was as if every ounce of strength had been wrung from Simon's body. Collapsing to the floor, he muttered, "Zora only had one kidney, yet I still forced her to donate her kidney. It's all my fault…"It was then that realization struck him. He jerked his head up and asked, "Who did she donate her kidney to?"No one answered him. He quickly summoned his Beta and ordered, "Look in

I thought Mom and Dad had predicted this. Simon would give in to Laila's confession for him and break our mate bond. After all, he'd broken our mind-link when he started getting closer to Laila a year ago. I supposed that he must've wanted to break our bond.Little did I expect him to turn down Laila's confession. "Stop bringing this up! My mate will only be Zora. I'll go check on her and see if she's awake."He entered my ward, but I was nowhere to be seen. He immediately stopped Healer Petra and asked, "Where's Zora? She's just donated a kidney. Why isn't she in her ward?"Stunned, Healer Petra replied, "Was it the one who donated her kidney earlier? She died during surgery."Simon froze. He couldn't believe his ears. "What did you say?"Healer Petra repeated herself. After pondering for a while, she added, "Originally, I wanted to inform you guys after the surgery, but you didn't seem to care about her at all. You all left with another patient."Simon staggered backward, s

Just then, Healer Petra stepped out of the operating room. The three of them rushed over, eager to ask how the surgery went. I snapped back to the present, my chest clenching as I watched them. I wanted to know how they would react once they found out I was dead. Removing her gloves wearily, Healer Petra said, "The surgery was a success. The kidney was transplanted smoothly. It's just that the donor—"Before she could finish, her assistant wheeled Laila out of the operating room. The three of them immediately surrounded her, too caught up to hear the rest of what Healer Petra had to say. And my body? It was tossed aside, left in the cold morgue like nothing. A wave of sorrow washed through me. No one cared about me when I was alive, but I couldn't believe that even now, after I was dead, no one bothered to claim my body.Did I really not deserve to be loved? I had already given in over and over again, always trying to please everyone. I didn't ask for much—I just wante

Surprisingly, my soul floated midair. I didn't disappear right away. I watched Healer Petra Holmes gasp the moment the scalpel dove into my skin, and only one kidney was found. "Why does she only have one kidney?" she boomed. "This is ridiculous! How could they make her donate her kidney when she only has one? This is murder!"Just then, her assistant panicked and yelled, "Healer Petra, the patient's stopped breathing. What's going on?"Only then did they realize I was poisoned by wolfsbane. It was already so deep in my system that I was beyond saving. "Healer Petra, what do we do now?" the assistant asked, clearly flustered. Looking resigned, Healer Petra shook her head and said, "Continue the surgery. Since the patient's already dead, let's not waste the kidney."I drifted out of the operating room. Outside, Mom, Dad, and Simon were all waiting anxiously. "Why isn't the surgery over yet?" Mom asked, looking worried. "They've been in there for so long!""Don't worry," Si
