Chapter 2

Author: Coco Leaf
In the next moment, Mom opened the door and came in, carrying the cake.

I was about to open my mouth to call for help when the alarm suddenly rang.

That was it. I knew I was done for.

Mom suddenly straightened up. Like a robot that was suddenly switched on, she said, "I have to take Anne to the dance studio tomorrow. She's working too hard. I have to make something healthy for her."

Mom carefully set the cake down, closed the door without hesitation, and then turned on the freezer out of habit.

Freezing air enveloped me.

I finally lost all my strength, and I couldn't make another sound anymore.

Mom hadn't been like this when I was younger.

If I tripped and fell during dance practice, she would gently help me up.

On my birthdays, she would always have surprises in store for me.

Back then, she used to hold me up so I could blow out the candles. She said, "Anne, you're the apple of my eye. Let's celebrate your birthday while we wait for your dad to come home."

Years passed, but Dad never came home.

Mom was paralyzed due to childbirth. It took a whole year before she regained her ability to stand and walk, but her legs were still stiff.

As she aged, the complications became even more obvious. But still, Dad didn't come back.

Mom started drinking excessively. She would get drunk and hit me, but when she sobered up, she would sob as she hugged me and apologized to me.

She said, "Anne, once your dad comes back, our family will return to normal. Once he comes home, I'll love you forever!"

But now, Dad still hadn't come home, and he'd even taken a mistress.

Mom kept her word. Dad didn't come back, so she didn't love me anymore.

In the walk-in freezer, my soul gradually drifted upward and, as if guided by instinct, floated out through the main entrance.

Around an hour later, Mom returned from her grocery shopping. She deftly put on an apron and began cooking.

After an hour and a half, she was done cooking.

Mom called out, "Anne, dinner's ready! Anne…"

The doorbell rang again.

I drifted to the entrance and saw Dad standing there, looking refined and dignified.

I was furious. "What business do you have with us? You're not welcome here! Go away!"

Sadly, Dad couldn't hear me. He even shouted, "Candace, are you and Anne home? It's me, Henry!"

As soon as he finished speaking, the door flung open.

Dad was startled by Mom's frantic expression.

He took a step backward.

Mom was like a long-term prisoner who finally saw sunlight.

She hastily fixed her hair as she sobbed in joy. "Henry, it's you! It really is you! You're back! Oh my goodness, you're really back. Anne and I never moved away because we knew you'd come back."

The landlord tried chasing Mom and me away on multiple occasions, but we refused to budge.

Mom compromised time and again just so that we could stay here. Our small home turned into a warehouse, and a walk-in freezer was installed later on. Mom and I were barely getting by while we waited for Dad.

The long years of waiting and suffering finally paid off.

So now, Mom's eyes were hot with tears as she reached out to embrace Dad.

But Dad was so startled by Mom's appearance that he kept backing away. Mom couldn't walk very well. She tripped over her own foot and crashed onto the ground.

She was an absolute wreck.

I tried to help her up, but my hands passed right through her.

When Mom heard that, she had a foul expression. But Dad was still going at it. He was venting as if his life depended on it. "Ugh, disgusting fools! You and your daughter have held me back long enough! Do you know how hard it is for me to find a muse? I—""Muse, my foot!" Mom suddenly started lashing out. "Henry, you're just a loser who got lucky. You have zero creative talent, and you're weak, spineless, and irresponsible. I don't believe for even a second that someone like you could paint anything that matters in the slightest. Trash like you have no right to be talking about muses!""...What?" Dad was dumbfounded. After all, for as long as he could remember, Mom had always admired him. She had never voiced her true thoughts like this before. At that moment, Mom had never been more lucid and decisive. She was probably pouring out all the frustration she had been bottling up for the majority of her life. "In terms of talent, I am a peerless genius in dance! As for Anne, I expecte

If Mom had an episode, no one would be there to take her to the hospital anymore. She wouldn't have anyone to coax her to take her medication and go to sleep. If Mom lost her temper and got into trouble, no one would be there to apologize in her stead and clean up after her anymore. If Mom cried because she was mistreated, no one would be there to hug her and protect her anymore. She would no longer feel the safety of home. From now on, Mom would truly be all alone.I looked behind me. The passage meant for me was nearing completion. I just needed one more day.One more day, and I could leave this place for good.I knew Mom couldn't hear me, but I still wanted to say, "Mom, from now on, I don't owe you anything anymore."In the next moment, Mom burst out into even more tragic sobs. Her cries must have been quite loud, for a passerby came over and asked her if she was okay.Mom said through tears, "I… I lost my child… I lost my precious daughter!"The passerby pitied Mom even

The police wanted to bring Mom in for some questioning, but she hid herself in time. They couldn't find her at all. When the police left, Mom sneaked into the crime scene at home. Then, she deftly reached into the kitchen hood and pulled out a phone wrapped in a plastic bag.I was shocked when I saw that. I had no idea that Mom was already aware of the surveillance camera at home.I wondered when she first discovered it.Mom took the phone to a quiet and secluded spot. She searched every nook and cranny of its files before locating a well-hidden link to a cloud account. It seemed that all the surveillance footage had been uploaded to the cloud.Mom pored through the footage from dusk to dawn, then from dawn to dusk. She was extremely patient as she organized and edited all the videos. These were all recordings of Dad secretly coming over to talk to me.In the videos, Dad was always expressing his hatred toward Mom.Meanwhile, I had always been stubbornly defending her.I was

Meanwhile, Dad was no longer his dignified self.He wore a cap, sunglasses, and a mask. He had a guilty and fearful look on his face.Mom shouted, "Henry, are you here for Anne and me? Anne is such an outstanding child, isn't she? You love her, don't you? Why don't we get back together?""In your dreams! Get lost!" Like a madman who had suddenly snapped, Dad shoved Mom onto the ground. "Ugh, you disgusting loser! Candace, stay away from me! I don't want to see you ever again!"As if right on cue, a car happened to pull up by the road. Dad hurriedly got into the car.The car door slammed shut. Mom threw herself at the car to stop it, but the car knocked her off her feet. She was sent rolling on the ground before coming to a stop. She sustained several cuts, and she had sprained her left wrist. She frowned in pain.Yet, as though she had no regard for her own well-being, she took off after the car. "Henry Carlton, you jerk! I'm disgusting to you? How could you call me that?"Natu

The pungent smell hung in the air, and the crowd dispersed soon enough.Only Mom remained standing where she was, staring at the rotting corpse in a daze. She stuck out like a sore thumb.Mom was a massive neat freak. She was probably upset with me again.I looked at my own corpse. When I pictured my dancing figure on the stage, pangs of pain shot through my heart.I was a vain person, too. I had given everything I had to dancing, and just when I achieved the glory I had been yearning for, I was destroyed by my mom, who had personally raised me.I ended up looking so pathetic…I could hardly suppress the sorrow in my heart. Unable to bear it any longer, I turned around and left. The police had cleared the area, and the corpse was taken downstairs. The procession was nearing the first floor when Mom suddenly moved from her position upstairs. She hurried down the steps. She should be disgusted with me, but she threw herself at me, crying, "Marianne! Please stop this right now.

I gradually began to feel an itch in my soul.Following the sensation back home, I realized that the power had been cut because the bill was overdue.Everything inside the walk-in freezer began to thaw. Drawn by the sickly sweet scent, rats and cockroaches poured in through tiny holes in the walls. The cloyingly sweet cake was already devoured, but even more cockroaches and rats were gathering inside.I never knew that dead people could look so horrendous.Actually, I had been hiding a secret from Mom. Dad had met with me in private many times. He said I had lived up to my identity as his daughter and that I was his most precious muse.He was obsessed with taking me with him. He wanted to wrench custody from Mom's grasp. But I never forgot what the psychiatrist told me. Mom was in such bad shape that she couldn't be left alone for even a moment. I had been dragging it out with Dad for Mom's sake.Dad probably ran out of patience, so he specifically waited for the moment I won
