Chapter 3

Author: Jo Wren
On the third morning, Kieran's voice came through our mind-link.

"You blocked Neil?"

"I only blocked his messages."

The other end of the link went quiet for a few seconds.

"Serena, the agreement is very clear. Emotional outbursts double your waiting period."

I'd been home for a day.

I was folding Wren's tiny clothes. Each piece was heartbreakingly small and soft.

She was so small. Thea said her heartbeat was weaker than a normal pup's and had to be checked every day.

Valerie had taken the oak cradle, so I lined an empty drawer with my coat and made a makeshift bed for Wren.

Kieran was growing impatient.

"Serena, the time you waste arguing with me will be added to your waiting period."

I finished folding each piece and tucked them into my bag.

"Then add it."

My voice was flat.

"Double it, five times, ten times. Do whatever you want."

"Kieran, I'm done waiting for you."

That afternoon, Kieran came home.

Valerie walked at his side, with Neil trailing behind.

He strode through the door in two steps, and his eyes landed on the tiny figure in the drawer.

I thought he would stop.

He did pause.

For about two seconds.

"She's small."

"She's four weeks early. Thea told you Wren's heart is weak."

"Thea tells me many things every day." He looked away. "She's alive, isn't she?"

"I made the right call, Serena. You were in labor for three hours. Valerie was in labor for ten. Even if the medicine had gone to you, it wouldn't have changed anything."

I laughed.

"Kieran, do you know I almost died giving birth to her?"

"You're standing here just fine now, aren't you?"

His brows drew together slightly as his eyes swept over me.

"Thea said you've been able to get out of bed for a while, yet you keep shutting yourself in this room. Is this how you're trying to punish me?"

"Luna, under the agreement, emotional outbursts are grounds for extending your waiting period."

Neil pushed up his glasses and quickly jotted it down on the document.

"That also includes... the time you spend waiting for your account access to be restored."

I looked at Kieran.

"So you came today with Neil to keep a record of how much time I owe you?"

Valerie slipped into a pair of slippers as if she belonged there, then smiled.

"You've got it wrong, Luna. Kieran came to help shorten your waiting period."

"As long as you stay calm and take Wren to her check-ups on time, and—"

"Apologize to Valerie." Kieran finished the sentence for her.

My nails dug into my palms, then slowly loosened.

So that was his real purpose.

He had come back only to make me bow my head to Valerie.

And the worst part was, I realized he truly believed he was offering me a way back.

"What about Wren's Welcome Howl?" I asked. "She's already three days old."

"Sunday," he said. "The Moon Stone is fully booked for the rest of the week. Sunday is the next available time."

"Her Welcome Howl needs to be scheduled?"

"You howled for Marcus's baby the same day."

"That was a special case."

"Serena, you should learn to wait."

I stared at him.

He hated waiting more than anything.

Yet with me, time and again, he made me wait.

Suddenly, I understood.

He didn't hate waiting.

He just hated having to wait himself.

Valerie raised her phone.

"I'm going to record the whole thing, Luna. Maybe tidy yourself up a bit before you apologize?"

After taking a few pictures, she casually posted them to the pack's private social media platform.

In the photos, my hair was a mess, my face deathly pale, and dark circles shadowed my eyes. Holding my baby, I looked like I'd been through hell.

Comments flooded in almost immediately.

[This is our Luna? She looks like a maid washing dishes in the kitchen.]

[Valerie is the one who belongs beside the Alpha. She's fast and efficient.]

[It's just childbirth. Why is she acting so fragile? I had three pups and never needed a drop of Moonveil.]

Kieran's expression darkened, but Valerie only leaned into his arms.

"I just wanted everyone to see how Luna's doing. She hasn't left the house since giving birth, and everyone misses her."

Kieran's expression softened.

He looked at me again.

"If you can't even apologize, then you can learn how to be a Luna."

"Starting today, Valerie will temporarily take over your Luna duties."

"Come back when you've learned to keep up with this pack's pace."

A metallic taste filled my mouth.

"Kieran, this is the third time I've told you."

"Wren didn't breathe for a full ninety seconds when she was born. You gave the medicine to Valerie. You chose that yourself."

Kieran's frown deepened, while Valerie let out a soft laugh beside him.

"For someone who makes it sound so serious, Luna, you had plenty of strength to glare at me just now."

She raised her hand.

"Oh, right. Were you looking for this?"

A solid-gold crescent moon pendant swung from her fingers.

My eyes widened.

It was my mother's keepsake.

After that day, Kieran bought a small seaside cottage next to my guesthouse and moved in.As if trying to make up for all the time I'd spent waiting for him, Kieran began learning how to wait himself. If he wanted to see me, he had to wait outside the guesthouse in advance, sometimes all night, and even then there was no guarantee he'd see me.If he wanted to walk me home after work, he had to wait outside the workshop at the time listed on my schedule. But my quitting time was usually flexible, and I'd already told Leo to ignore any questions Kieran asked."Is he your mate?"I shook my head."My ex.""I think it's time someone stepped in," Leo said. "I'll handle it.""You don't have to," I said.He took two steps, then turned back."Just to keep the peace at the workshop."I looked at him for a moment, then let him go.I never found out exactly what Leo had said to Kieran. All I knew was that, when I got home from work that day, Kieran was sitting on my doorstep."Serena, do you like

The Alpha of the Blackwood Pack sank to his knees on the stone floor of the small jewelry workshop. The impact made a dull thud.He hated being slow. He hated waiting. But now, he was finally learning what it meant to wait."I know I was wrong.""The Council took my speed," he said quietly. "It takes me ten seconds to shift now. Ten seconds, Serena. I'm only starting to understand what I asked of you, every single day."Everything that had happened came crashing over me again."If I go back with you, will that erase the ninety seconds when Wren wasn't breathing?"Kieran was silent for a moment."Serena, I didn't know back then...""You knew."I took a deep breath."In the delivery room, I called out to you through the mind-link three times. You answered, ‘Wait for me.'""But the next thing I knew, you were at Moon Stone, holding her baby and giving him his Welcome Howl.""I only..."I looked at him."You simply didn't take my pleas seriously. A few words from Valerie were all it took f

Mistral Cove was a bay with no Alpha. The tides were the only clock in Mistral Cove. Fishing boats went out and came back with the tides. No one frowned at someone for being late, because the tide never ran on anyone's schedule.I hadn't chosen this place because it was anything special. It was simply unfamiliar and remote, a place where no wolf ever glanced at a watch. When I crossed the northern border, the pain of the severed mate bond still burned deep in my wolf.Wren stirred against my chest, let out a soft whimper, and fell asleep again. After three days and nights on the road, I knocked on the door of the last guesthouse at the edge of the cove in the middle of a downpour.A young man opened the door, flecks of gold dust still clinging to his shoulders. He glanced at the pup in my arms, then at the blood on my hands."Come in," he said. "Let's get her warm first."His name was Leo Ashford, a lone wolf with no pack.He ran the guesthouse, but his real business was a small, priva

Kieran didn't know how he got back to Alpha House.By the time he came to his senses, he was standing in Serena's room.Everything looked exactly the same as before. On the coffee table sat the herbal tea Serena had brewed, now stone cold.Lavender she had picked was laid out neatly on the windowsill to dry.On the shelf in the yard, the watering can still held a little unused water.Kieran looked around frantically, trying to convince himself that everything was fine.Serena wouldn't leave. She was just throwing a tantrum. She must have paid Thea to play along.Wren had to still be here. Serena was just hiding for the time being. There was still time.He steadied his breathing and walked into the study, intending to tear up the Waiting Period Agreement.Even now, he clung to the delusion that the agreement was what had driven her away. But when he saw what lay on the desk, he froze where he stood. The Council's Receipt of Petition, stamped in red.A certified copy of the delivery reco

(Kieran's POV)Kieran arrived at the Moon Stone before moonrise. He was always punctual. He never kept anyone waiting.Tonight, the pack had gathered at Moon Stone. The elders wore gray ceremonial robes, and the low beat of drums filled the air as everyone waited for the Alpha to give Wren her long-overdue Welcome Howl.Kieran glanced down at his watch.By the time the moon rose, Serena still hadn't arrived. He frowned. She's slow again. His thumb tapped the watch face twice, a habit he had when he was impatient. He'd already sent her a message through the mind-link."Serena, the moon's up. Where are you? Don't be late. "There had been no reply.Five minutes.Ten minutes.Whispers began to ripple through the crowd."Why isn't the Luna here yet?""The Welcome Howl has to be sung at moonrise. The moon doesn't wait for anyone."Kieran had never waited for anyone. In his world, people always arrived before he could even check his watch. He reached out to her through the mind-link."Serena

Without thinking, I lunged for it.Valerie held the pendant high above her head, a mocking smile spreading across her face."Look, Kieran. Doesn't Luna keep saying she can't hold up? She moved so fast. Does that look like someone who just gave birth?""She's doing it on purpose to make you worry."A chill rose in Kieran's eyes.He reached out, caught me, and held me firmly in place."Serena, you're even more unreasonable than I thought.""Let go of me! That's my mother's!""Valerie was only looking at it. Don't make a scene."His tone was light, as if he were dismissing a piece of junk."She's been gone for three years. Keeping her things doesn't mean anything anymore."It felt as though a hole had been gouged through my chest. My mother, on her deathbed, had refused her final round of treatment. She used the money she'd saved to have a jeweler craft a solid-gold crescent moon pendant set with a moonstone."Serena, this is the last thing Mom can give you.""Gold carries the Moon's bles
