Chapter 4

Author: Tangle H
Aldric, the healer, arrived quickly and confirmed that Lillian had only been overwhelmed by the Alpha's aura. There was no poisoning or other injury.

Before long, Lillian opened her eyes, wrenched herself out of my arms, and lunged for Caine.

"Daddy, it's Mommy's medicine!

"Ever since I took the stabilizing medicine she gave me, my head has been all foggy. I don't even know what I just said. She must have poisoned me and messed up my memory!"

Aldric frowned. "Your medicine comes from the same batch as three other pups'. The bottles are sealed by the Temple of the Moon Goddess."

"Then she must have switched it! She's the one who always gives me my medicine. Of course you'd take her side!"

I looked at this child who had just been exposed, yet in the very next breath had pinned an even graver accusation on me. Strangely, the turmoil in my chest began to settle.

"Lillian, are you willing to swear to it before the Moon Goddess?

"If you've lied, the oath will turn on you."

She looked at Caine, then at me, and raised her hand through gritted teeth.

"I'll swear. Mommy poisoned me!"

The last thread of my willingness to shield her snapped.

"Fine." I told the guard, "Bring the Elders, Pack Child Welfare, and the rest of the pack here.

"Poisoning is a serious accusation."

Lillian thought I was finally scared. She shrank back into Caine's arms, a hint of triumph surfacing in her eyes.

I knew she was lying. She just wanted to see me humiliated.

But this time, I put away every last shred of softness.

This time, I would let her tell her lies in front of everyone.

Within half an hour, the council hall was packed with Elders, officials, and pack members who had come at the news.

The memory crystal, Lillian's leftover medicine, the seal records from the Temple, and the dual signatures from every medicine pickup were all laid out on the long table.

Faced with this many people, Lillian cried harder.

"Mommy has always been jealous that I have Alpha blood. She's afraid I'll be stronger than her when I grow up, so she's been using medicine to suppress my wolf. Today it only scrambled my memory. Next time she'll poison me to death!"

Aldric tested the last drop of medicine in front of everyone.

"There's nothing wrong with the medicine. She fainted because her wolf couldn't withstand the Alpha's aura."

Marcus pointed to the seal. "The bottles haven't been opened since they arrived from the Temple. Two people were present every time a dose was removed. The Luna had no opportunity to switch anything."

Caine turned to Lillian. "Lillian, do you still insist your mother poisoned you?"

"It was her!" Lillian shrieked. "They all answer to her! She's the Luna. Of course she can change whatever she wants!"

Rowan lowered his head. The Elders' expressions grew darker by the moment.

Caine watched her for a long time before he finally spoke.

"Enough. I've been putting up with you for far too long."

Lillian immediately turned to look at me, her eyes lighting up again.

"Mommy, did you hear that? Daddy's been putting up with you for far too long."

But Caine pushed down the finger she was pointing at me.

"I'm talking about you."

The smile froze on her face.

"That's impossible!

"Daddy, Mommy is just a weak Omega! You'd choose her over me, your Alpha daughter? Why?"

Caine didn't answer.

His silence pulled the last lifeline from her grasp.

Lillian shot to her feet, eyes red, and shouted, "Daddy, you're playing favorites! She's not even my real mother!

"If you're going to believe her over me, then I'll go find my real parents!"

The council hall fell silent.

I was tired of this spectacle.

"Lillian, are you sure? You want to find your biological parents?"

"I'm sure! I've known for a long time. The whole pack has been whispering about it. I was never really yours!" She lifted her chin. "My real parents are both powerful Alphas. They would never let an Omega push me around."

The Pack Child Welfare officers exchanged uneasy glances.

I quietly told my aide to bring the guardianship papers I had signed.

They were relinquishment papers for guardianship of the pack's heir.

I had already had them stamped by the Werewolf Council. If Lillian had shown any restraint, I would never have brought them out.

When the papers arrived, I told Lillian, "Every form has been completed. Once you sign, our legal guardianship ends. I am not saying this in anger."

Lillian glanced at me, eyes burning with fury, and pressed her thumbprint onto the paper without hesitation.

"I won't regret it."

I smiled faintly. "Good."

Then, in front of everyone, I placed a thick stack of adoption papers before her.

"You're right. You are not Caine's biological daughter or mine."

Lillian's eyes lit up.

"And your biological parents are both Alphas."

She looked eagerly at the birth records.

Biological father: Lucius Grey, high-ranking Alpha. Biological mother: Evelyn Grey, also an Alpha.

"I knew it!" She was so thrilled she nearly laughed out loud. "How could I possibly have an Omega mother? My mother and father really are both Alphas!"

She held up the adoption papers and looked around, waiting for everyone to congratulate her.

But no one smiled.

The Elder nearest to her looked away. Aldric sighed. Even Rowan, whom she had just slandered, could only look at her with pity.

The joy faded from Lillian's face, bit by bit.

"Why are you all looking at me like that?"

She clutched the adoption papers, suddenly panicking.

Two years later, I underwent restorative treatment at the Temple of the Moon Goddess. The following year, Caine and I had a daughter of our own, Phoebe.Phoebe inherited Caine's Alpha bloodline. She loved training with her father and admired his strength, but she never once thought it made her better than me.When Caine returned from patrol, she would take his cloak, then turn around and drape it over my shoulders."Mommy gets cold. Hug Mommy first, Daddy."When I limited her candy or hurried her to bed, she would get upset too, and she would run to Caine to complain.Caine would always hear the full story first, then tell her, "You're allowed to dislike Mommy's rules. But you can't make up a version of her that doesn't exist just to win."Sometimes Phoebe sulked, but she always came back to apologize once she calmed down. She never needed to put down her Omega mother to prove she deserved her Alpha father's love. When Phoebe was seven, the pack school held an open house.Caine gave me

After Lillian returned to the Greys, Pack Child Welfare sent monthly custody reports. The Greys didn't beat her, and they didn't dare let her go hungry. They simply placed her among their eighteen children and ranked them all again by the strength of their wolves. The clothes and books she brought back were taken by her younger sisters that same day. When the caseworker demanded their return, Evelyn tossed only the most worn-out items back onto her bed.She had once had her own room. Now she shared an attic with four sisters. The academy processed her withdrawal in three days. Lucius spent the saved tuition on training for his eldest son, the child with the strongest wolf. She woke up earliest every day to prepare her siblings' training gear, yet at meals she sat at the very end of the long table. The other children never called her their sister. They called her "the sickly pup who got sent back."The stabilizing medicine I paid for arrived on time every month, but Evelyn often forgot

Lillian sobbed as she confessed every lie.I had never starved her. I had never met secretly with a Beta. I had never poisoned her medicine. She had wanted Caine to despise me and, better yet, throw me out of the family."Mommy, I won't care that you're an Omega anymore." She clung to me desperately. "I'll be good. Can we go home? Please?"I slowly pulled my hands away."If they had been willing to hold you just now, willing to make you an heir, would you still be apologizing to me?"Her mouth opened, but no answer came.Caine stepped between us."You can't only remember she's your mother when no one else wants you.""Daddy, I really won't do it again!""Under pack law, accusing her of poisoning you could have sent her to prison for life." Caine looked at her. "You knew there was no poison, and you still wanted the entire pack to punish her for you.""I was just trying to scare her...""But every single time, she was the one saving you."Caine pointed to the old files on the table."Du

The Greys thought they would at least get Lillian without paying anything and collect a subsidy on top of it.But Clarke turned to the next page and told them that restoring biological custody would reopen their abandonment case from ten years earlier."You will have to post a guardianship bond and pay the back child support you should have covered. If you abandon her again, the Greys' access to public training resources will be suspended for the following year."Lucius slammed the table. "She's the one who wanted to come back! Why should we have to pay?"Evelyn turned and glared at Lillian."You were living the good life with the Luna's family. What got into you?"Lillian backed away as both of them bore down on her."I thought... you would want me.""Want you for what?" Lucius pointed at the mark of her damaged wolf. "Another mouth to feed who can't even win us any resources."Evelyn argued with him in hushed tones for a moment, then asked Clarke reluctantly, "Can we just not take he

Clarke rejected the Greys' demands on the spot."Lillian's place at the academy was granted because Caine and Serena Blackwood were her guardians. It does not transfer when custody returns to her biological family. She also has no claim to the pack inheritance."Her clothing, books, and personal belongings may go with her. Her treatment medication will continue to be provided. But you have no claim to the Luna's household assets."Lucius's face darkened immediately."If there's no inheritance, what's the point of taking her back?"Evelyn's expression turned calculating, and she suddenly pulled Lillian close."Didn't you say that Omega had been bullying you? Tell the truth in front of Child Welfare. If she mistreated you, she owes you compensation, doesn't she?"Lillian looked at me, a familiar hesitation flickering in her eyes.I said nothing. After a few seconds, she spoke. "She wouldn't let me have candy, and she made me train every day. I wanted a new gaming console, and she wouldn'

The next afternoon, the Greys finally arrived, taking their time.Three children of similar ages trailed behind Lucius. Evelyn glanced down at her communication stone as she asked, "So which one is she?"An attendant brought Lillian before them. Her fingers were white with nerves, but she kept her back straight."I'm Lillian. Your daughter."Evelyn looked her over several times. Her gaze settled on Lillian's thin shoulders, and recognition finally dawned."Oh. The one who caught the plague."Lillian's smile faltered. "Didn't you send me away to protect the other children? Just temporarily?"Lucius looked as though he had heard a joke."The Lunar Eclipse Plague spread so fast. You had a fever for seven days straight. The healer said even if you survived, your wolf would probably never recover."We have so many healthy children. Were we supposed to pour all our medicine and money into a sickly pup who might carry defective genes?"The council hall was deathly silent.I remembered the qua
