"What was that about at the altar? What do you mean the mating ceremony is permanently canceled?"

Kellan grabbed my wrist, displeasure written all over his face.

"I know calling you at the last minute to cancel the mating upset you.

"But everything I did was in obedience to the Moon Goddess's decree, and for our future. As the future Luna, can't you be a little more understanding?"

I wrenched free and shook my head.

"I won't be your Luna.

"I meant every word I said at that altar."

After leaving the villa, I checked into a hotel.

My phone buzzed in my bag.

It was my father.

"I already know what happened at the mating ceremony.

"This isn't the first time, and it won't be the last. A man who truly wants to mate with you will make it happen no matter what. But if he doesn't want to, he'll always find an excuse.

"My girl, are you sure you still want him as your mate?"

It had taken my father a single remark to grasp what I had needed ninety-nine tries to understand.

I answered softly.

"It's over between us. Whatever you've been planning, you don't need to hold back on my account."

A smile crept into his voice.

"Good! That's my daughter. The future female Alpha of Mooncrest doesn't do anything halfway!

"Want me to send someone to pick you up? The sooner you leave that sorry excuse of a pack, the better."

"No. I'll come home on my own later."

I hung up and sank into a deep sleep.

When I opened my eyes, my phone showed hundreds of missed calls from Kellan and a flood of messages.

I was about to read them when the door was kicked in.

Kellan stormed in, eyes bloodshot.

"Vanya! If you have a problem, take it up with me! What did Adina ever do to you?

"Everything she says comes straight from the Moon Goddess. Are you questioning the Moon Goddess Herself?"

The Moon Goddess was the highest faith of all wolves. Kellan was wielding that accusation like a weapon.

I blinked.

"What are you talking about? What happened to her?"

Kellan sneered.

"You don't know what you did?

"You posted online just so people would feel sorry for you and go after Adina, didn't you?

"Well, congratulations. The comments are vicious. Adina is sensitive. How is she supposed to handle that?"

I scrolled to the top trending topics.

#WestmereAlphaAbandonsMateForStepsisterAdina#

#AdinaFakesMoonGoddessDecreesToStealHerSistersMate#

...

One trending topic after another, all about Adina.

But she still held the title of the Moon Goddess's messenger, and the majority were defending her. Only a handful believed she was lying.

Even reasonable doubts were swallowed up by her supporters. How many people were actually attacking her? And how harsh could they really be?

I said calmly.

"Those posts weren't from me. They have nothing to do with me."

Kellan's jaw tightened.

"Drop the act. The person you hired to post already confessed!

"Adina couldn't take it and jumped from the fifth floor. The doctors are still trying to save her. Do you even have a heart?"

My mouth opened, but the words stuck in my throat.

Once a wolf awakened, male or female, their physical resilience increased dramatically.

Jumping from the fifth floor was about as dangerous as hopping over a puddle.

As a pack Alpha, there was no way he didn't know that.

The only explanation was that because it was Adina, he'd lost the ability to think straight.

Before I could figure out how to prove my innocence, he hauled me to my feet.

"Adina is hurt because of you. I want you to go kneel before the Moon Goddess's shrine and pray. Pray that she survives.

"And when she wakes up, you'll beg for her forgiveness."

I struggled with everything I had.

"Are you out of your mind? I'm not even fully dressed!"

What set wolves apart from common beasts was their capacity for reason and the decency of clothing.

To appear outside in a state of undress was a profound humiliation.

He hesitated for only a second before gritting his teeth.

"This is the punishment you deserve for what you did to Adina."

I stared at his cold profile.

The last thread holding my heart together finally snapped.

Lance didn't let me go for three straight days and nights. It wasn't until my father sent someone to summon me so I could change into the Alpha's ceremonial attire that Lance finally let me go.The ceremony was grand.Every wolf in Mooncrest gathered for the occasion. With all of them as my witnesses, I received the scepter from my father, the symbol of the Alpha's authority.I officially took command of Mooncrest. To my surprise, the pack had no objections to a female Alpha. My first act as Alpha was to march on Westmere.Kellan hadn't heeded my warning. He'd used the incomplete combat training plan to drill his warriors. After three months of it, they hadn't improved. They were weaker than before. An outsider might think he was handing his pack over on purpose.I didn't waver. I ordered Mooncrest's warriors to attack. Those who surrendered were spared. Those who resisted were cut down. But I never saw Kellan on the battlefield. As Alpha, he should have been at the front, leading his

I left my father's chambers.Walking along the forest path, I heard Lance playing a tune on a leaf above me.It was the same tune he'd played when I was six. When I didn't look up, he started dropping pebbles at my feet.I shot him an annoyed look."Are you done? How old are you? So childish."He jumped down, wearing his smuggest expression."I'm doing you a favor. Thought you might cry yourself to sleep over your breakup. Show some gratitude. If it were anyone else, I wouldn't bother.""Well, thanks. I'm going to bed."I kept walking. As I passed him, he caught my arm."Vanya, now that you've let go of that relationship, could you give me a chance?"I might never be an Alpha, but I can give you just as much as he ever could. I like you. No. I love you. I have for years."Under the moonlight, his eyes burned with an intensity I had rarely seen. His voice was uncharacteristically serious.Under that searing gaze, my face grew warm.I quickly looked away."What are you talking about? The

I returned to Mooncrest. My father called me to his chambers and spoke in a solemn tone."Vanya, you're my only child. You've grown up. It's time for you to take over as Alpha. In three days, I'll hold a succession ceremony for you."I was taken aback."I thought you'd blame me. If not for me, our warriors would have taken Westmere already."And I'm a woman. Mooncrest has never had a female Alpha."My father, usually so stern, smiled gently."Don't be silly."A pack as small as Westmere? We can take them whenever we want."As for your being a woman, if there's never been one before, then you'll be the first."Watching you grow is what I've always wanted most. After everything that happened, you've become more mature and levelheaded. You put the pack first. I believe you'll be an outstanding Alpha."Inside me, my wolf howled. She was happy for me too.Alpha was the highest title in any pack, a symbol of power and an enormous responsibility. For my father to pass it to me was an act of a

My claws closed around his throat."None of your business."Worry about yourself. You're about to become a prisoner."He pressed closer despite the sharpness of my claws. They pierced his skin instantly, and blood trickled down his neck."Vanya, I don't believe you'd actually hurt me."You're just angry. I messed up. Do whatever you want to me, but don't throw away our future. Call them off. Please."Kellan had become Westmere's Alpha at sixteen. He had always been absolute in his authority, proud and unyielding. He had never begged anyone like this. The Westmere wolves around us wept."Alpha! Don't beg her! We'd rather die than grovel before the enemy!""Go ahead and do it! She hid her identity and wormed her way into our Alpha's life just for this day!""Even if you win, what then? A victory built on emotional manipulation will make you the laughingstock of every pack!""The Moon Goddess will punish you!"My expression hardened. I stared at Kellan across from me.So this was his real

The hall fell silent.Every wolf turned toward the voice. He was no longer a young man.Silver threaded his temples, but he still stood ramrod straight, his gaze as sharp as a hawk's.One look from him was enough to set their hearts racing with fear.He was Nolan Vale, Alpha of the most powerful pack in the territory. In the past three years, he had conquered five packs. Only Westmere remained. That period had been a nightmare none of them wanted to remember. Every night, wolves lay awake, terrified that Mooncrest would attack under cover of darkness. But for some reason, Mooncrest never came. They slowly let their guard down, believing the threat had passed. But today, Nolan was here. What had he just said?A collective shudder ran through the crowd. They turned their eyes to the woman on the altar.He... was here for her.War was about to break out.Adina finally came to her senses, staring at me in disbelief."You're from Mooncrest? You're Nolan's daughter?"I collapsed to the groun
