Adina's face crumpled, tears glistening in her eyes.

"Vanya, that hurts. I wrote the training plan. How could it possibly be yours?

"If you wanted shared credit, you could have just asked. But you can't claim my work as your own."

She looked perfectly innocent. Perfectly pitiful.

If I hadn't poured my heart and soul into that plan, I might have believed her too.

But in Kellan's eyes, her version was the truth.

He pushed me aside and looked at Adina with soft, pained eyes.

"I'm sorry. I shouldn't have let her near you. Since she won't listen, let her stay here and reflect."

He supported Adina as he led her away.

I chased after them.

"Kellan! I have proof that the plan is mine!

"I'm the only one who knows what the string of numbers at the end of the plan means!"

They both stopped.

Kellan frowned.

"It's just a string of numbers. That doesn't prove anything."

"But if you don't understand those numbers and train blindly, your warriors will only get weaker! Adina, can you tell us what they mean?"

I dug my nails into my palms.

A flicker of guilt crossed Adina's face.

"Kel, I'm not feeling well. I can't breathe."

Kellan studied her face for a long moment, then scooped her up and left.

He left me with one sentence.

"I'm the Alpha of Westmere. If I say the plan is Adina's, then it's Adina's."

I slumped against the door, my body sliding down to the floor.

So that was how it was. In Kellan's eyes, the truth didn't matter.

I simply wasn't the one in his heart, so I didn't deserve the right to speak the truth.

My phone, which had had no signal for days, suddenly buzzed.

A message from my father.

"Vanya, the warriors are assembled. I'm about to lead Mooncrest to flatten Westmere. Stay safe. I'm coming to bring you home."

I looked up at Kellan's retreating figure, my emotions tangled.

This day had always been coming.

The guards locked me in again.

I knelt before the Moon Goddess's statue and prayed silently.

"Moon Goddess, protect us."

In the dead of night, a crash at the doors jolted me awake.

Two warriors seized my arms and dragged me to the altar.

I was thrown to the ground like a rag doll.

Wolves crowded below the altar.

Adina stepped forward and bowed to the Moon Goddess.

"Great Moon Goddess! On behalf of the pack, I thank You for Your guidance."

Then she picked up a bowl of dark liquid and walked toward me.

Wolves forced my shoulders down, making me kneel before her.

As she drew closer, alarm shot through me.

It was wolfsbane!

It was lethal to any wolf.

I fought with everything I had.

"Let go of me! You have no right to do this!"

Adina tilted my chin up, her expression full of pity.

"Vanya, the Moon Goddess told me. The wolf inside you has been corrupted by darkness.

"She's been leading you astray, making you do terrible things.

"Only by putting her to sleep can you go back to normal.

"Don't worry. I had the healer adjust the dosage. It won't harm you."

I shook my head frantically, trying to pull back, but the wolves held me fast.

I could hear my wolf howling inside me.

She sensed the danger. The wolfsbane wasn't meant to put her to sleep. It was meant to kill her.

Desperate, I turned my helpless gaze to Kellan.

"Save me. I saved you once. You promised you'd always protect me."

Kellan's brow furrowed, and something like reluctance flickered in his eyes.

He was about to speak, but Adina cut in first.

"Kel! The Moon Goddess is never wrong. Putting Vanya's wolf to sleep is what's best for her.

"Besides, have you forgotten all the terrible things she's done since her wolf awakened?"

Kellan turned his face away, his voice rough.

"Vanya, I believe stealing credit for Adina's training plan wasn't really your intention. Once your wolf is fully asleep, everything will get better."

The wolves below began to murmur.

"Awakening your wolf is one of the biggest events in any pack. No one has ever been punished by having theirs put to sleep. She must have truly crossed the Alpha."

"Everyone knows Adina and the Alpha grew up together. No outsider could ever compete with that bond. She was deluding herself."

"Without her wolf, can she even call herself one of us? I wouldn't have the nerve to go on living."

I heard every word. So did Kellan.

He said nothing.

With her back to the crowd, Adina's face twisted with venom.

She pried my mouth open and whispered so only I could hear.

"You deserve this. This is what you get for going after Kel."

The liquid touched my lips. I pressed them together with everything I had, but it still seeped into my mouth.

I felt my wolf crying out in agony inside me, and tears streamed down my face.

Was I really going to lose her...

That was when a bullet whizzed past Adina's hair.

She dropped the bowl in shock, trembling all over.

"Who's there?!"

A deep voice boomed from the far end of the altar.

"I'd like to see who dares lay a hand on the future female Alpha of Mooncrest!"

The next time I heard of them was a year later. They hadn't chosen death that day. They went to Sunset Forest.Sunset Forest was shrouded in toxic miasma year-round. As the strongest wolf Westmere had ever produced, Kellan survived despite the rapid decline in his body's functions.Adina wasn't so fortunate. She had spent years relying on Kellan, never training, letting her body waste away. Her wolf had long since fallen dormant and couldn't be roused. On her first day inside, poisonous sores erupted across her body. The pain was unbearable. She clung to Kellan's shadow, desperate for him to look after her. It was her only chance at survival. But Kellan had no patience left for her. He shook her off without a backward glance.Adina was left to survive alone, constantly on guard against predators while enduring the poison's torment.Any other wolf would have given up long ago.But she was tenacious. Not only did she survive, she learned to harness the toxins to brew poison. She spent a

Lance didn't let me go for three straight days and nights. It wasn't until my father sent someone to summon me so I could change into the Alpha's ceremonial attire that Lance finally let me go.The ceremony was grand.Every wolf in Mooncrest gathered for the occasion. With all of them as my witnesses, I received the scepter from my father, the symbol of the Alpha's authority.I officially took command of Mooncrest. To my surprise, the pack had no objections to a female Alpha. My first act as Alpha was to march on Westmere.Kellan hadn't heeded my warning. He'd used the incomplete combat training plan to drill his warriors. After three months of it, they hadn't improved. They were weaker than before. An outsider might think he was handing his pack over on purpose.I didn't waver. I ordered Mooncrest's warriors to attack. Those who surrendered were spared. Those who resisted were cut down. But I never saw Kellan on the battlefield. As Alpha, he should have been at the front, leading his

I left my father's chambers.Walking along the forest path, I heard Lance playing a tune on a leaf above me.It was the same tune he'd played when I was six. When I didn't look up, he started dropping pebbles at my feet.I shot him an annoyed look."Are you done? How old are you? So childish."He jumped down, wearing his smuggest expression."I'm doing you a favor. Thought you might cry yourself to sleep over your breakup. Show some gratitude. If it were anyone else, I wouldn't bother.""Well, thanks. I'm going to bed."I kept walking. As I passed him, he caught my arm."Vanya, now that you've let go of that relationship, could you give me a chance?"I might never be an Alpha, but I can give you just as much as he ever could. I like you. No. I love you. I have for years."Under the moonlight, his eyes burned with an intensity I had rarely seen. His voice was uncharacteristically serious.Under that searing gaze, my face grew warm.I quickly looked away."What are you talking about? The

I returned to Mooncrest. My father called me to his chambers and spoke in a solemn tone."Vanya, you're my only child. You've grown up. It's time for you to take over as Alpha. In three days, I'll hold a succession ceremony for you."I was taken aback."I thought you'd blame me. If not for me, our warriors would have taken Westmere already."And I'm a woman. Mooncrest has never had a female Alpha."My father, usually so stern, smiled gently."Don't be silly."A pack as small as Westmere? We can take them whenever we want."As for your being a woman, if there's never been one before, then you'll be the first."Watching you grow is what I've always wanted most. After everything that happened, you've become more mature and levelheaded. You put the pack first. I believe you'll be an outstanding Alpha."Inside me, my wolf howled. She was happy for me too.Alpha was the highest title in any pack, a symbol of power and an enormous responsibility. For my father to pass it to me was an act of a

My claws closed around his throat."None of your business."Worry about yourself. You're about to become a prisoner."He pressed closer despite the sharpness of my claws. They pierced his skin instantly, and blood trickled down his neck."Vanya, I don't believe you'd actually hurt me."You're just angry. I messed up. Do whatever you want to me, but don't throw away our future. Call them off. Please."Kellan had become Westmere's Alpha at sixteen. He had always been absolute in his authority, proud and unyielding. He had never begged anyone like this. The Westmere wolves around us wept."Alpha! Don't beg her! We'd rather die than grovel before the enemy!""Go ahead and do it! She hid her identity and wormed her way into our Alpha's life just for this day!""Even if you win, what then? A victory built on emotional manipulation will make you the laughingstock of every pack!""The Moon Goddess will punish you!"My expression hardened. I stared at Kellan across from me.So this was his real

The hall fell silent.Every wolf turned toward the voice. He was no longer a young man.Silver threaded his temples, but he still stood ramrod straight, his gaze as sharp as a hawk's.One look from him was enough to set their hearts racing with fear.He was Nolan Vale, Alpha of the most powerful pack in the territory. In the past three years, he had conquered five packs. Only Westmere remained. That period had been a nightmare none of them wanted to remember. Every night, wolves lay awake, terrified that Mooncrest would attack under cover of darkness. But for some reason, Mooncrest never came. They slowly let their guard down, believing the threat had passed. But today, Nolan was here. What had he just said?A collective shudder ran through the crowd. They turned their eyes to the woman on the altar.He... was here for her.War was about to break out.Adina finally came to her senses, staring at me in disbelief."You're from Mooncrest? You're Nolan's daughter?"I collapsed to the groun
