Chapter 58 — Ofiura's POV

"Why," Tessa said, "is there a man in your kitchen wearing no shoes?"

I froze with a spoonful of cereal halfway to my mouth. My sister stood in the open doorway of my apartment with her key still in the lock, a tote bag slung over one shoulder and a look of absolute, gleeful delight spreading across her face.

"You have a key," I said stupidly.

"You gave me a key. For emergencies." She stepped inside and kicked the door shut behind her. "This feels like an emergency."

Chapter 70 — Nikolai's POV"Tell me you're not doing this."Dante stood in the doorway of my study with his coat still on and his hand braced against the frame, as though he'd run the whole way up the stairs. I didn't look up from the desk. The yellow page lay in front of me, flattened beneath my palm, and beside it a fountain pen with its cap still on."I'm not doing anything.""You've had that paper out for an hour.""I'm reading it.""You wrote it." His voice cracked. "Nikolai. She said no. She looked you in the face, in your own kitchen, and said no. You *swore.*""I know what I swore.""Then keep it."I closed my eyes. The study was very quiet. Somewhere downstairs, a clock struck the half hour, and I heard Ofiura's voice in my head, clear and level, the way it had sounded that morning in the kitchen. *Nothing gets filed in my name without my yes.*I had meant it. God help me, I had meant every word."Pryce called me this morning," I said.Dante went still. "Councilwoman Pryce?"

Chapter 69 — Ofiura's POV"Rule one of long car journeys," said Judith Marlowe, handing me a paper bag without taking her eyes off the road. "Never eat the cheese crackers first. They're a trap.""A trap?""They make you thirsty. Then you drink too much tea, and then you're begging me to stop at a petrol station that smells of diesel and regret." She glanced sideways, her rimless glasses flashing. "Eat the apple. Save the crackers for the hills."I ate the apple. It was crisp and sweet, and for the first time in two days the knot in my stomach loosened a fraction. We were three hours into the drive north in Judith's elderly green sedan, which she called Winifred and handled like a vintage racehorse. The motorway had dwindled to a winding country road, and the autumn hills rolled out on either side in sheets of rust and gold. Mist clung to the valleys. Somewhere behind us, Maren's gray car kept a polite, steady distance, and I had stopped

Chapter 68 — Ofiura's POV"Miss Voss? Sign here, please."The courier was a young man in a gray uniform with a clipboard and the apologetic expression of someone who had delivered bad news before. I stood in the lobby of Ashwood with my coat half off and a paper cup of herbal tea cooling in my hand, and I looked at the thick cream envelope he held out. It carried the Council's seal, a silver wolf's head pressed into dark red wax."What is it?""I'm not allowed to say, miss. Only that it requires a signature."I signed. My handwriting looked steady, which surprised me. He tipped his cap, murmured an apology, and hurried out through the revolving door, and I stood with the envelope in my hands while the morning bustle of the lobby flowed around me.My wolf had gone very still.I carried it upstairs to my office, shut the door, and slid a finger beneath the wax. Three pages, heavy and formal, the type crisp as frost.

Chapter 67 — Helena's POV"They want the deposit in *cash*, Mother. In cash! For a wolf made of ice!"Damon swept into my morning room without knocking, waving a crumpled invoice like a man announcing a declaration of war. I was halfway through my first cup of tea and a very important page of the *Courier's* financial section, and I did not lift my eyes."Then pay them in cash.""It's four thousand dollars.""It's an ice sculpture, Damon. It's meant to be expensive.""It's meant to be *eleven feet*, and the man says the structure will need to be eleven feet *and a half* to account for melting." He slapped the invoice onto the table, rattling my saucer. "Patricia says I should be flexible. I don't feel flexible. I feel *cheated.*""You feel hungover.""I feel *both.*"I turned a page. "Sit down, darling. You're casting a shadow over the marmalade."He sat, sulking magnificently, and reached for

  • My Alpha Husband Chose His Mistress,I Became His Rival'sLuna   Chapter 66 — Ofiura's POV

Chapter 66 — Ofiura's POV"His name was Harold, and he never once raised his hand to me."Mrs. Alder said it with her cup in both hands, her voice still rough and astonished, as if she were testing a floorboard she hadn't trusted in years. We sat in her immaculate kitchen, my mother on one side of her, me on the other, and the rain had thinned to a soft gray patter against the window."He didn't have to," she went on. "He only had to say a thing once. 'You'll keep this house quiet, Margaret.' 'You'll never speak of what you hear.' 'You'll obey me in all things.' And I did. I couldn't *not.* It was like being a puppet with all the strings attached to my own bones."My mother's hand tightened on her shoulder. "How did he do it?""A binding. An old one, from his mother's family." Margaret's mouth trembled. "The night we were wed, he tied a cord around my wrists and spoke the words. I thought it was a ceremony. I thought it was *love.* By morning I couldn't lift my voice above a whisper

  • My Alpha Husband Chose His Mistress,I Became His Rival'sLuna   Chapter 65 — Ofiura's POV

Chapter 65 — Ofiura's POV"She never comes out, you know."My mother said it in a low voice, setting a plate of shortbread on the tiny table beside her kitchen window. It was a gray Sunday afternoon, rain ticking against the glass, and I was curled in the armchair with a blanket over my knees and my feet propped on a stool, enjoying the particular luxury of being fussed over by a woman who had waited decades to do it."Who?""Mrs. Alder. Across the hall." She nodded toward the door. "Seventy-four, maybe. Sweet as honey. She leaves a plate of something outside my door every Thursday, and she never says more than three words to me. I've lived here two months. I don't think I've heard her voice above a whisper.""Maybe she's shy.""Maybe." My mother sat down opposite me, wiping her hands on a dishtowel. "But shy people don't flinch when a door slams. And shy people don't hold their wrists like that.""Like what?""Like this." She crossed her own forearms against her chest, tucking her h
