Chapter 2

Auteur: Oatmeal
After all these years with Charles, I knew him well.

Whenever it came to Susie, he would take her side without hesitation.

First it was a dress he told me to give up for her.

Then it was jewelry. Whatever Susie took a liking to, he'd make me hand over.

He always said the same thing: Susie was his only sister.

She'd suffered so much before being adopted.

He just wanted to make it up to her.

The moment I said a word about it, he'd threaten to leave me.

He was confident I'd never leave, because the first time we met, I'd told him he was my fated mate.

He had finally agreed to make me his Luna.

He had only agreed because he'd had a falling-out with Susie.

After I moved into his estate, he was decent to me sometimes. When he bought cake for Susie, he'd pick one up for me too.

But five years had passed.

Charles still hadn't developed an ounce of trust in me.

I swallowed the ache in my chest and repeated, "If you don't believe me, try reaching your parents through the mind-link. You'll feel it yourself."

The moment I finished, the healer came to urge me again.

There was no response on the other end. I let out a small breath of relief, certain that this time, Charles would sense that his parents were hurt.

But that hope lasted less than a few minutes.

He shouted over the phone. "Enough! You know I'm busy. I'm here with Susie because she accidentally hurt someone, and if my parents find out, they'll blame her!

"So you're doing this on purpose! Let me make this clear, Selena. If they hear one word about this, I won't let it go!"

Whatever patience Charles had left was gone.

I was about to explain when Susie grabbed the phone.

"Selena, I know you've never liked me. Charles just brought me out for a change of scenery. We won't be gone long, so don't worry.

"Oh, and the bow Charles gave me got blood on it. I don't really like keeping dirty things around, you know how I am. Be a dear and clean it up for me, give it a good polish. After all, it was all paid for with our family's money."

Susie's tone was calm and sweet.

It was as if nothing had happened. There wasn't a trace of fear in her after what she'd done.

Charles let out a cold snort beside her.

"That's what she's supposed to do. She lives in our home. This is the least she can do."

The color drained from my face. My nails dug into my palms.

My throat closed so tight I couldn't speak.

It started before the Spring Hunt. Charles had admired one of my bow designs and asked me for it himself.

It was rare for him to ask me for anything.

The fact that he actually liked something I'd designed made me happy.

I found the finest craftsman in the pack to bring the design to life.

I gave him the finished bow.

But when I put it in his hands, he complained about the color.

I adjusted it to his liking and was about to commission a new one when I discovered the old bow had already ended up in Susie's hands.

He always did the same thing with my gifts.

He would find some excuse to pass each one along to Susie.

The thought made my chest seize so hard I could barely breathe.

Charles said, "Enough. Just do what Susie asked. I'll bring you something nice when I get back.

"Stop wasting my time with this act."

And he hung up.

I hadn't even had time to respond.

All that was left was the dial tone.

The healer urged me once more, visibly losing patience.

I turned to her, my voice shaking. "My mate and I never had the mating ceremony, but can I sign anyway? Save them first. There's no time."

My voice was a plea.

My eyes burned, and tears spilled over before I could stop them.

The healer's expression softened. She sighed and handed me the pen.

The moment the pen touched one of the consent forms, the operating room doors flew open, and the healer performing the surgery called out urgently.

"They're crashing. They've lost too much blood.

"We couldn't save them!"

My wrist went slack. The pen slipped from my fingers and clattered to the floor.

His words stopped me cold and shattered everything I thought I knew about him.I never imagined Charles could say something like that.It was as though I was seeing him for the very first time.Or perhaps I had never known him at all. The way he'd wept at the church, vowing vengeance, now seemed like nothing but a cruel joke.A wave of nausea rose in my chest."Get lost." I hung up.On the other end, Charles was stunned into silence. Then his messages came through.Selena, I've already apologized. What more do you want? Susie lived with you for five years.Don't you feel anything for her at all?Even if you hate her, this isn't the time to hold grudges. If she's banished from the pack, she won't survive!I didn't reply. I blocked this number too.Word of what Susie had done spread quickly through the pack. Everyone learned she had killed her own adoptive parents and that her brother had paid someone to take the fall.Charles tried desperately to defend her, but in the end, he couldn't

He could barely stand, stumbling backward step by step.Susie opened her mouth to explain, but Charles struck her across the face. "You're evil! You vicious bitch!"Susie spun and crashed to the ground. She scrambled back up and clutched Charles's hand. "I honestly didn't know it was them I shot. I'd had too much to drink that day."You knew that perfectly well!"Besides, what's done is done. I can't undo it. They're gone. Blaming me won't bring them back."Susie dissolved into tears, begging Charles to forgive her over and over.Charles bit down hard on his lip, fighting back the sob rising in his throat. Finally, he couldn't hold it anymore. He kicked Susie away."How can you say that?! They were your parents too! They brought you home from the orphanage. They adopted you."How can you be this heartless?! Were they not good to you?! And you had me pay someone to cover for you!"Charles broke down completely. He crouched on the ground, clutching his head, and howled with grief.Susie

"Why didn't you tell me?! Selena, something this terrible happened to my parents and you didn't say anything?!"How could you be so heartless?!"I laughed in disbelief. "I didn't tell you? Charles, you're the one who refused to believe me. Get that straight!"My voice rose."If you weren't always so petty, why would I have doubted you?!"Charles's face was twisted with rage. His chest heaved violently. For a long moment he couldn't steady himself, then he broke down in tears.I froze, then shot back. "When have you ever believed me?!"Susie charged at me and slapped me across the face. "This is all your fault!"Tears streamed down her face. "Why didn't you tell us?! We didn't even get to see them one last time!"She raised her hand to hit me again.Charles stopped her, his eyes dark with warning. "That's enough! Don't cause a scene right now!"Susie froze for a moment, then glared at me with pure hatred.Charles dropped to his knees, covering his face, and wept.Even his fingertips sho

Susie asked, "What's wrong?"Charles locked his phone, and his expression returned to normal. "Nothing. Just haven't heard from Mom and Dad lately.""Maybe because we left without telling them?"Susie mulled it over, then her thoughts turned to me."After all, Selena was the only one home. Who knows what she told them."Charles glanced at her but didn't agree the way he usually did.He said nothing and headed toward the estate. When they arrived, the estate was eerily quiet. Charles called my name the moment he stepped inside. He called out several times. No one answered.Tired, Susie called for the servants to take their luggage. Again, no response. The cakes on the table sat untouched. Charles frowned, sensing something was wrong. He shouted, "Where is everyone?!"A servant who had been upstairs packing to leave heard the commotion and rushed down in a panic. "Alpha, you're back.""Where's Selena?!"She knows we're supposed to be hosting Mom's birthday party, and she hasn't lifted a

Under normal circumstances, he should have been able to reach his parents without any trouble. He was about to pull out his phone and call them. But Susie laughed lightly beside him. "Did you forget? Mom's birthday is in a few days. It's perfectly normal not to be able to reach them right now."They're probably getting everything ready for the party. Mom's probably trying on dresses."Eleanor's birthday was indeed coming up.Before the Spring Hunt, Edward had been arranging for the dress Eleanor would wear to her party. He'd even brought in a top chef from another pack to prepare the food. After Susie laid this out, Charles let himself believe it.His voice turned even more furious. "Selena, what have they ever done to you?! How can you keep saying such vile things about them?!"I'm warning you one last time. If you keep this up, I will throw you out the moment I get back!"I scoffed, too exhausted by his willful blindness to fight it."You won't need to. I'll leave on my own."There w

Workers were still dismantling the jewelry display in my closet. My eyes widened. "Who told you to touch my things?!"When I first moved in, Eleanor had arranged the largest bedroom for us. Charles usually slept in his study. No matter how spacious it was, I was the only one who ever used it.I'd redecorated it to my taste, replacing all the old furnishings with new ones.Every piece of furniture had been carefully chosen by me.I couldn't find my jewelry. Panic rising, I turned to the workers. "What are you doing?!"One worker paused and said evenly, "The Alpha called. He said Miss Susie's room doesn't get enough light, and it's affecting her mood. He ordered us to clear this room for her."My mind went blank, as if I'd been struck.Charles hadn't even discussed it with me."When did he call?""Just now. He told us to get it done immediately so it'd be ready when they come back in a few days."The worker's words made my head spin.I grabbed my phone and tried calling Charles again. Th
