A mistake

Hera POV

I chuckle at Nyx's words. Deep down,I pray she gets to change her mind someday. She has gone through so much in life and deserves to be happy.

" Now that you are here,book me a flight to Las Vegas in an hour." I inform her. Nyx narrows her eyes at me after hearing my words.

" Is this about..." She doesn't get to finish before I shake my head.

" I don't give a flying fuck about that bastard or what happens to his body. They can throw it in the ocean for all I care." I reply, disgusted.

Carlos made his bed when he decided to join hands with Hector to commit evil. Let him lie on it. How his family comes to learn about him passing away is none of my freaking business.

" Chloe called me last night. She sounded...weird." I say, recalling how different she sounded. She was nothing like the Chloe I have always known. It sounded like she was in some kind of trouble.

" Alright. I'll do that right away." Nyx replies and leaves the room. I am left alone in my space. Going to Vegas should excite me, after all,my family stays there. However,I feel nothing about the city where I was raised. If it weren't for Chloe,I wouldn't bother going there. It's been years since I last visited my family. Years since I last saw my mother.

It's not like she ever seems happy when she sees me and Tara, my sister? She despises me. After packing a small suitcase and passing in an eatery to grab breakfast,I make my way to the airport. As the plane soars high in the sky,I sigh just imagining the eyes I'll be attracting later in Vegas for being plus size.

Being plus size is the least of my concerns in this life,yet people make me feel like crap for something I have no control over. Why should I be made to feel like crap because I am big and beautiful?

Why should I have to be made to feel guilty for existing because some assholes think being skinny is a must?

Why should I have to go through this bullshit just because of a society that can't accept its differences? But most importantly, why should I even care? I have people who appreciate me for being just me, that should be enough.

I take a short nap as I travel to Vegas and wake up an hour later, feeling better. The plane soon lands and I'm on the road, driving to Chloe's house. She shared her address with me last night.

It doesn't take long to locate her house. It's in a decent neighborhood in the heart of Vegas. I park my rented car and step outside. I spot Chloe's red car parked outside confirming that she is in the house.

I make my way to the house and ring the bell. A minute later,the man I recognise as Chloe's husband answers the door. He looks surprised to see me but then,he quickly masks his surprise and gives me a smile.

" Hey,is Chloe in?" I ask out of courtesy.

" Hera, right?" He asks and I am surprised he knows me. I didn't get to meet him personally during his and Chloe's wedding.

" Chloe talks so much about you." He answers my unasked question. I nod.

" I need to see Chloe." I repeat and he heaves a sigh. " You just missed her. She just left for a charity gala she was supposed to attend in my hometown." The man answers and I narrow my gaze at him. Chloe called asking me to come and see her and leave for a gala? Why is that not making any sense at all? That's not something Chloe is capable of doing unless...

" Are you sure? Her car is still here." I say, pointing at Chloe's car parked outside the house. The guy looks anxious albeit for a splitting second then he schools his expressions.

" Uhmm...yeah,it is. My parents got her a new one for her birthday last week. You know how they are." He lies. I know he is lying because Chloe's birthday isn't until next month.

" I see. Where is the gala? Maybe I'll go there." I push him. If he is hiding something,he will definitely expose himself at some point.

" You won't. It's far from here. Besides,it's a private event. You need to be invited to attend. " He quickly replies and I nod, faking a smile.

" I see. Thanks anyways. Tell her that I'll swing by tomorrow to see her once she is back." I reply and leave. There's no need for me to stay there any longer. Something is definitely off. Chloe never mentioned anything about leaving Vegas for a gala.

What's more,her husband lied to me. I'll have Justin check everything about the guy. I try calling Chloe's phone and my suspicions keep growing when the call goes straight to voicemail.

I drive to a hotel and book a room for the night. After freshening,I give Justin a call and feed him all the details I know about Chloe's husband. I don't trust that man,not one bit and if Chloe is in some kind of trouble, I'll not leave until I get her out of it.

With the whole evening ahead of me,I decide to stroll through the city of Vegas. My legs carry me and I find myself standing outside a familiar old but decent house. I am about to turn around and walk away when a familiar voice sounds behind me.

" Hera? Is that you?" My mother's voice sounds behind me and I close my eyes, wishing I had ignored my legs.

" Hey, mom." I turn around and greet her. She has changed so much since the last time I saw her. Her eyes are still as sharp as I remember. I wonder if her tongue is still the same.

She is holding a basket filled with what seems like groceries.

" Wow. I can't believe it's really you. Come on in." She says excitedly and starts dragging me into the house. I fight the urge to snatch my hand and turn around to leave but I decide to give it a shot. Maybe things have changed and maybe she has too.

"Perfect timing. Your sister is home with her husband. I am going to ask Riccardo to Introduce you to a few of his friends. Maybe one of them will like you since you can't seem to find a man for yourself." She blabbers about. I fight the urge to roll my eyes at her clothed mockery. In her eyes,I can't find a man to settle down and needs my sister's husband to introduce me to his friends?

" Mom,it's been years. Is this all you care about? Getting me a husband?" I ask,stopping dead on my tracks and causing her to stop. She turns to face me with a frown.

" Of course. What else would I want you to do? You are already over thirty. How much time are you going to waste?" She asks, sounding like it's the most obvious thing.

" I can't believe I actually hoped you had changed. Have you ever considered that I am single by choice? Why must you use my sister's life to set standards for me?" I ask, trying to control myself not to scream.

"Because your sister is doing well. I don't want people talking behind my back whispering how my daughter can't get a husband of her own." My mother snaps. So this is about what people say about her? This is actually about her. She doesn't give a flying fuck about me at all.

" This was such a mistake." I say, pulling my hand and turning around to walk away.

" Mistake you say? The biggest mistake was ever giving birth to you Hera. You disappoint me.”
