Chapter 2

Author: Katerina
While clearing the bedside cabinet, I found an unopened bottle of fever tonic.

The label carried a date from six months earlier. By then, Talia had already become the reason for our first serious argument.

It began after midnight.

Kieran and I were in bed when our unfinished courtship bond tightened. We had not exchanged permanent marks, but I could still feel when another wolf entered his private mind-link.

Silver crossed Kieran’s eyes as he answered.

“Who is contacting you this late?”

“Talia. She told me to rest because the council meeting ended late.”

I waited for him to recognize why that sounded intimate. When he simply closed his eyes, I asked whether they often spoke after midnight.

Kieran’s patience faded.

“She coordinates pack business. One message means nothing.”

“If another male wolf entered my private link to say good night, would you accept it?”

“You should ask yourself why a harmless message makes you this angry.”

The next morning, he called a council meeting.

The chair at Kieran’s right had always remained empty. By Blackridge custom, it belonged to the future Luna.

When I entered the chamber, Talia was sitting there.

Kieran looked directly at me and continued the meeting. Talia recorded patrol reports and leaned close whenever he spoke quietly.

Afterward, I asked why he had placed her in my seat.

“She needed access to the maps.”

“There were other chairs.”

“So because you dislike one message, I must reorganize my council?”

I reminded him that I had only asked for a boundary.

Kieran answered, “Then learn the difference between a boundary and control.”

After that, every disagreement followed the same pattern.

During the next full-moon run, Kieran assigned Talia to his right flank. That position usually belonged to his Beta or mate, but he ordered his Beta to lead the rear formation.

Talia hesitated before shifting.

“Mara normally runs beside you.”

“Not tonight.”

He waited until her golden wolf stood beside his black one. Then he looked at me, expecting a reaction.

I confronted him after the run.

“Running beside me does not make her my mate.”

“You know that is not the point.”

“Then stop giving it meaning.”

A month later, I was exposed to wolfsbane while inspecting the southern storage rooms. The dose was not fatal, but it left me shaking with fever while my wolf retreated too deeply to heal me.

Kieran promised to stay until the healer arrived.

Then Talia contacted him.

Her first independent patrol had found fresh rogue tracks near the northern boundary. The warriors had secured the area, but Talia wanted Kieran there.

He reached for his coat.

“You said you would stay.”

“The healer is coming.”

“The patrol has six trained warriors.”

“Talia has never handled rogue evidence before.”

I forced myself upright. “You need to leave tonight?”

Kieran stopped at the door.

“I could have stayed, Mara. You turned this into another argument.”

Then he left.

The healer was delayed by a storm, and my fever continued rising. I finally wrapped myself in a blanket and walked to the treatment hall alone because my wolf was too weak to shift.

While the healer prepared a cleansing draught, celebration howls rose through the pack link.

The northern patrol had returned safely. Talia had completed her first command, and Kieran had remained at the lodge for the ceremonial meal.

I started to send him a private message.

The fever is getting worse.

Before I released the words, another wave of celebration passed through the link. Kieran’s approval surrounded Talia so clearly that I closed our connection.

After that night, I stopped asking.

When Talia occupied the Luna’s seat, I chose another chair. When she ran beside Kieran, I joined the rear formation. When he canceled our plans because she needed him, I answered with one word.

Fine.

Sometimes Talia opened a private link after midnight, and the pull against our courtship bond woke me. I simply turned away and went back to sleep.

Kieran was pleased.

I once heard him tell Mason, “Mara has been much easier lately. She used to challenge every decision. Now she understands which things are worth fighting over.”

Everyone believed I had finally become secure enough to deserve him.

I looked down at the old fever tonic. Once, I had kept it to remind Kieran of the night he left me alone.

He had never asked why it remained unopened.

I dropped the bottle into the disposal box.

For once, the answer I was waiting for would not come from Kieran.

It would come from the Moon Council.

I left my phone beside the open travel case and kept packing.

The morning of our mating ceremony arrived clear and bright.Silvercrest’s moon garden stood above the valley, surrounded by white pines and winter roses. Silver ribbons marked the aisle, and sunlight reflected from the frozen lake.I walked to the garden entrance on my own.Elias waited beneath an arch carved with the Silvercrest crest. From the moment I appeared, his attention never left me.When I reached him, he took my hand. His warm, steady touch settled the last trace of tension in my chest. The pack priest asked us to face each other before the moonstone altar.Elias kept his vow simple.“Mara, I will never make you guess where you stand with me. If you feel uncertain, ask me. If I hurt you, tell me, and I will listen.”His fingers tightened gently around mine.“You will never have to prove that you deserve my love by showing me how much pain you can endure.”The garden fell quiet. For six years, Kieran had treated my needs as flaws he could train out of me. He wanted me to ask

Another six months passed. One week before the mating ceremony, I stood in Silvercrest’s ceremonial room while a seamstress adjusted the silver embroidery along my dress. My phone rang on the table.Mason Hale.I considered letting it stop, then answered.“Mara, Kieran knows about the ceremony.”I looked at my reflection. “All right.”Mason paused, apparently expecting more.“The official announcement reached Blackridge last night. He went to Alpha House and tore the entrance ward out of the wall. The moonstone shattered, and he has been sitting beside the doorway ever since.”I smoothed the fabric over my waist.Mason continued carefully. “He keeps saying that if he had registered your scent that night, none of this would have happened.”“Registering it now would change nothing.”“I know, but he finally understands how badly he treated you.”“That understanding belongs to him.”“You spent six years together.”I raised my eyes to the mirror. “Does that mean I owe him a seventh?”Silenc

Three months later, rain swept across the Moon Council’s winter summit.I had just left the assembly hall with several Silvercrest delegates when a man crossed the courtyard toward me. Two Council guards stopped him before he reached the covered steps.I recognized Kieran immediately. His coat was soaked, and exhaustion had sharpened his face. The control that once seemed inseparable from him had disappeared.“Mara.”I asked the other delegates to continue without me. The guards remained between us until I allowed Kieran to approach.“Talia has been removed from every council position,” he said. “Blackridge accepted responsibility for the duplicated proposal, and she no longer has access to Alpha House or my private link.”Those were the changes I had once begged him to make. Hearing them now stirred only weariness.Kieran held out the moonstone bracelet I had left behind.“I repaired it.”“I don’t want it.”His hand lowered.“I know I was wrong. I thought you were trying to control me

Three weeks after Mara left, Blackridge received a summons from the Moon Council. The pack’s finance chief entered Kieran’s office carrying a sealed ledger and placed it on his desk.“The Council has suspended our winter defense grant.”Kieran looked up. “For what reason?”“They found two submissions built from the same regional winter-defense model. Silvercrest submitted the first with Mara Ellison listed as its author and pilot director. Blackridge submitted the second six days later under Talia Mercer’s name.”Kieran opened the ledger. The models were nearly identical. Both contained the same patrol intervals, shelter calculations, and method for reinforcing mountain wards. Even Mara’s handwritten explanation of the emergency sequence appeared in both copies.Kieran recognized Mara’s writing.“Who authorized Blackridge’s submission?”The finance chief turned to the final page.“Your approval seal is attached.”Kieran stared at the silver wolf stamped beneath Talia’s name.He had app

Silvercrest Pack, eight in the morning.I stood before the territory council and touched the final mark on the map.“If we move the eastern watchtower uphill, the patrols will gain a clear view of both river crossings. The old tower can become a winter supply post, which keeps the project within budget.”The council members studied my proposal in silence. Then the man at the head of the table closed his report.Elias North, Alpha of Silvercrest, had approved my transfer after reviewing several boundary plans I completed for Blackridge.“The revised route cuts the response time by nearly twelve minutes and removes the blind section beside the lower ridge,” he said. “This is the version we’ll use.”No one questioned the decision because I came from another pack. No one removed my name from the report or treated my work as a favor I should feel grateful to provide. When the meeting ended, Elias stopped me near the door.“How has your first week been?”“Busy, but better than I expected.”“

Kieran called Mara immediately. The call would not connect. He reached for their private mind-link instead, but the familiar connection was gone.Mason set down his drink. “What did she say?”Kieran kept staring at the message.“She canceled the mating ceremony.”No one laughed.Talia stepped closer. “She may only want you to go after her. She was still packing at the cottage this morning.”Kieran grabbed his coat and left without answering. He drove to the cottage himself. The windows were dark, and no trace of Mara’s scent remained around the door. Even so, he unlocked it and called her name.Silence answered him.The rooms had been stripped of every sign that she lived there. Her boots were gone from the entryway, her books had disappeared from the shelves, and the blue blanket she always kept over the sofa was missing. In the bedroom, empty hangers swayed inside the wardrobe.Kieran stood among the spaces she had left behind and remembered the Council marks on her trunks. He had ne
