Chapter 2

Author: Zoe bear
The wolf in me didn't sleep much anymore.

Not since the mate bond started fraying.

Still, I tried to fake it. I really did. Eyes shut, breathing slow, my inner wolf curled tight like a pup in the corner of my mind. But when the mattress dipped and a familiar warmth pressed against my back, I knew the jig was up.

Arms slid around my waist, and Alpha Martin—my so-called mate, the one who used to make my wolf purr—nuzzled my hair like everything was just peachy.

"Simona," he murmured, his voice all velvet and guilt. "Why aren't you asleep yet?"

"Are you mad at me for missing your birthday today?"

I mumbled, "Got a bit of a headache. Can't fall asleep."

He tensed slightly. After six years together, he could sniff out my lies . But he played along, maybe to soothe his own conscience.

"A headache again?" he asked softly, placing his fingers on my temples. "Let me help."

He started massaging gently, and I hated how good it felt. I hated even more that the gardenia scent clinging to him made my wolf sneeze inside my head.

I could no longer smell our mate bond on him—

the rose and chocolate scent that once drove me crazy with longing was completely gone.

I'd heard that just a few days ago, Alpha Martin had a custom perfume made—he'd asked for something sweet, with a gardenia note, not too cloying.

But I was allergic to my mate's new mistress's favorite flower.

"Martin," I said, swatting his hand away as my skin started to itch. I wrapped myself tightly in the blanket, shielding myself from the scent. "I'm fine. Go rest."

He pulled back. "Simona, are you really mad at me for missing your birthday?"

"I'm just tired," I said. "Don't overthink it. You know I love you."

He looked at me like I was his salvation. Like I still mattered.

"I love you too," he whispered, and then he pulled a little velvet box from his pocket.

Inside was a sapphire bracelet, gleaming under the moonlight. He clasped it around my wrist like it was a promise instead of a bribe.

"There was an important event at the Packhouse today," he said. "I couldn't miss it."

He meant the celebration. The one where everyone toasted him and Luna Yvonne.

My wolf growled low, but I kept her leashed.

Barely.

"Right," I murmured. "Can't miss a public coronation."

He didn't catch the bite in my words. Instead, he leaned in, trailing kisses down my neck, hand brushing over the scar on my stomach.

"Simona," he whispered, "let's have a pup."

My blood turned to ice.

He realized his mistake too late.

Of course he forgot.

Five years ago, Martin was nearly torn apart by rogues. I led the retaliation. I shifted mid-run, leading the Shadow Crown warriors into battle. I found him bleeding under a crumbled wall, a rogue's silver dagger raised above his chest.

I didn't hesitate. I dove in front of him.

That blade didn't hit his heart—but it did destroy my womb.

No shifting could heal it. No wolf magic. Not even the Moon Goddess herself could reverse the price I'd paid to save him.

I couldn't bear pups. Not the natural way, anyway.

But I'd prepared. I'd had my eggs frozen years ago—back when Martin still brought me wildflowers and made my heart race.

Now?

Now he kissed the scar reverently, whispering, "Having you is enough."

Liar.

Minutes later, he fell asleep . His breathing slowed. His hold around me loosened.

I carefully lifted his phone and unlocked it.

Same passcode—my birthday.

The screen lit up, and there I was. Lock screen. Chat pin. Profile photo.

Everyone always said Alpha Martin worshipped me like I was the moon herself.

Yeah, well. Apparently, he prayed at two altars now.

I opened his private photo album.

My wolf let out a low snarl the second the first image loaded.

Martin. Yvonne. Laughing. Hugging. Kissing.

I scrolled through them like I was stabbing myself with every swipe.

"Martin, the pup and I miss you," read Yvonne's last message.

Three months pregnant. And she'd already claimed my Luna crown before the baby even had claws.

I returned his phone, tucked myself into the covers, and turned my back to him.

Then, I booked a ticket to the witch's gathering.

Since the vow was broken,

it was time for me to reclaim what was mine.

Belle held me in her arms, her hand gently patting my arm in comfort. I didn't say a word. Just reached for the bottles lined up on the counter. Screw the taste. I wanted numbness. Numbness was better than this clawing ache in my chest."Alpha Martin, you know what's funny?" My voice cracked halfway through, but I kept going, eyes locked on his face like I could burn the truth into him. "Yvonne wasn't the only one, was she?"His wolf flinched. I saw it—just a flicker in his golden eyes, but it was there."Before her, there were others. And I kept wondering, every damn day—did you stop loving me? Did you ever love me at all? But every time you came back, you'd hold me like nothing happened, whisper how I was the only one. That I was your forever mate."I let out a bitter laugh that sounded more like a growl. "I started drinking just to sleep. My wolf couldn't rest when yours was off with someone else."Martin's hand clenched around a photo like he was trying to crush the past. Belle st

I'll never forget how Alpha Martin once held me tenderly by the waist, watching the sunset over the ocean with me.Back then, I told myself that as long as Alpha Martin was willing to love me, I could forget all the unhappiness. It was also here, in this very place, that he made a vow—to love me and only me, for the rest of our lives. His expression softened. Clearly, he remembered too.He moved slowly, carefully edging closer to me."Simona, I remember," he said."At Blue Moon Pack, you gave me your first kiss… and your first night.""I swore to the sea that I'd love you forever."His tone grew emotional as he tightly interlocked his fingers with mine."Now that we're back at Blue Moon Pack… can't we pretend none of that ever happened?""Please, Simona. Just give me one more chance."I looked into his earnest eyes—and couldn't help but laugh."Alpha Martin, you can pretend nothing happened.""But what about me?"The atmosphere froze again. I knew it—he was going to dodge the question

I yanked my hand away from Alpha Martin's grip and walked straight into the room, silently protesting. The room faced the ocean—outside the window was a beautiful sea view. Alpha Martin came up behind me and gently wrapped his arms around my waist."Simona," he whispered, his breath brushing my ear, "I remember you love the sea. I booked this room just for you. The moment you open your eyes, you'll see the deep blue ocean."My entire spine stiffened. That bitter ache in my chest surged up and took control.I shoved him off so hard he stumbled back a few steps, and I spun to face him, my voice rising with every word. "Alpha Martin, I never liked the ocean!"His brows pulled together in confusion, like I was speaking in tongues."Have you forgotten?" I shouted, pointing toward the window. "I once fell into the sea—I have thalassophobia!"My wolf whimpered at the memory.I was twenty. Martin had taken me on a cruise with his elite little Alpha club. I told him I wasn't feeling great, an

Alpha Martin said I loved the ocean, but the truth was—it was his favorite, not mine. He forced his preferences onto me, making them mine by default. Suddenly, I felt exhausted. I lowered my head and sighed helplessly. "Martin, let me go. Think of it as setting yourself free too." "This kind of back-and-forth… it's just meaningless now."Alpha Martin acted like he didn't hear me. He clutched my wrist tightly, terrified I'd slip out of his grasp again. Pain shot through my arm, and I frowned in discomfort.Noticing it, Alpha Martin quickly called the front desk to ask for allergy medicine. Then he crouched beside me, resting his head on my knee. "Simona, I'll tell Yvonne to get rid of the pup, okay?" "Don't be mad at me because of this—it's all my fault."Ever since I was stabbed and lost the ability to have children, Alpha Martin had never brought up pups in front of me. Everyone in our circle urged him not to waste his life on one woman. "Carrying on your bloodline i

Alpha Martin was breathing hard, his fingers trembling uncontrollably. He was holding me so tightly I couldn't breathe—I pounded his shoulder with all my strength. "Martin, let me go… I can't breathe…"His eyes were red, and cold tears fell onto the back of my hand. His breath was shaking. As if desperate to prove something, Alpha Martin pulled out his phone and showed me a video from our wedding day.In the video, when the officiant announced the bride's entrance, Alpha Martin looked toward the aisle, eyes filled with happiness. But when Yvonne appeared instead, the entire crowd gasped.Alpha Martin's expression turned feral as he threw the microphone aside and charged at Yvonne like a wild beast. "What are you doing here?" "Where's Simona? What did you do to her?"Yvonne, gently caressing her slightly rounded belly, giggled and threw herself into his arms. "Martin, didn't you want to marry me?" "Simona said she was willing to give you up. You're mine now, and I'm your

I didn't want to argue with him anymore. Not with my wolf pacing inside me, frustrated and fed up. She'd had enough of his half-truths and full-blown lies. Me too.So, I turned off my phone and headed toward the boarding gate.As the plane took off, I looked out the window and felt—lighter. Freer. My wolf gave a low, satisfied huff. That was something.Meanwhile, back on the ground, Alpha Martin was losing what little was left of his composure.According to the poor airport staff later, he grabbed one of them by the collar, voice booming through the terminal like thunder."Stop it! Stop that plane right now!"But… no one stops a commercial aircraft, even if you are an alpha. From my window seat, I saw him.Martin.Running across the tarmac like a madman, his suit jacket flapping behind him, hair wind-whipped, desperation etched into every line of his face."Simona, come back!" he shouted."I was wrong—please! Give me a chance to explain!"But the plane climbed higher, the clouds swallo
