Chapter 3

Auteur: Perfect Timing
I walked right past him.

When I reached the door, Mom called after me in tears. "Callie, would we ever do anything to hurt you?"

I did not look back, because the answer was already clear. They would, and they already had.

Three days after the application deadline, Cedar Hollow High held a panel for outstanding graduates. I had not planned on going.

However, Mr. Ormsby called me out by name in the class group chat. [As one of our top scorers, Callie will be sharing her experience with the underclassmen. Please don't let personal feelings get in the way of a school event.]

I knew exactly what he was trying to do. He wanted to make it official in front of everyone that I had "chosen" the local teaching contract program of my own free will.

I went. It was not to go along with it. It was to see how far they were willing to take this act.

A banner hung across the auditorium.

The principal, the dean of students, and the PTA representative were all there.

My parents sat in the front row. Mom wore a new dress, and her smile looked both proud and wounded.

Mr. Ormsby stood on the stage holding a microphone. "Callie has an outstanding record, but instead of blindly chasing a big-name school, she took her family's situation into account and chose to dedicate herself to education right here at home. That shows a real sense of responsibility for a young person today."

Applause broke out. I sat in the audience, and my stomach kept churning.

Responsibility? They had tampered with my applications, and then they called it responsibility.

Mr. Ormsby looked at me. "Callie, why don't you come up and say a few words?"

Every eye in the room landed on me.

Mom pressed her hands together and mouthed at me. "Don't make a scene."

I walked onto the stage and took the microphone. The auditorium fell silent.

"I really do have some advice for the underclassmen," I said.

Mr. Ormsby smiled with satisfaction.

The next second, I looked out at the audience. "Don't tell anyone your application portal password. Don't give your verification codes to your parents, teachers, or relatives. Take screenshots and screen recordings before and after you confirm, and send them to your own email to keep a record."

Mr. Ormsby's face changed instantly. The audience started murmuring.

I kept going. "Because some people will claim they're doing it for your own good, and then steal the choice you earned with over ten years of hard work."

Mr. Ormsby slapped his hand over the microphone. "Callie!"

Dad shot up from his seat. "What nonsense are you spouting?"

I did not argue with them. In that setting, there were more of them, and they had the authority.

What I needed right now was not to win the argument. I needed to push them until they panicked and slipped up, and revealed even more evidence.

Sure enough, that afternoon, Mom posted a long voice message in the family group chat.

"We worked so hard to put her through school, yet the moment she does well, she turns her back on her own parents.

"We helped her pick a stable career, but she says we're trying to ruin her life. You all be the judge. What kind of daughter does that?"

The group chat quickly blew up.

Aunt Joyce wrote, [That girl has studied herself stupid. She doesn't appreciate everything her parents do for her.]

Uncle Wayne wrote, [Callie, don't go too far. Your parents raised you for 18 years. What's wrong with going to a local school?]

The day I left town, the sky was perfectly clear.Wendy and her mom drove me to the train station. Constance came too.She handed me a document folder. "There are copies of your acceptance letter, your financial aid paperwork, the contact info for a legal aid attorney, and instructions for the school's hardship enrollment program inside. Keep the originals with you."I took it and gave her a solemn nod. "Thank you, Ms. Mayhew."She smiled. "When you get to school, study hard. Do it for yourself, not to prove anything to anyone."My eyes stung. "I will."Before I walked into the station, I turned to take one last look. The town was small. It was so small that my house was only a ten-minute taxi ride from the train station. It was so small that everyone at the grocery store knew every kid's SAT score by the next morning. It was so small that whenever a girl wanted to go somewhere farther away, a chorus of voices would chase after her, asking why she would not just stay. Now I wa

After that, there were still many smaller ties to cut. Some were financial, some were emotional and some had to do with who I was. Every cut hurt, yet every one was necessary. The day my acceptance letter arrived, it was raining all across the county. When the courier called, I was at Constance's nonprofit office, sorting through my student loan paperwork."Callie Danforth? I've got a college acceptance letter here, addressed to this location."I ran downstairs and nearly stepped into a puddle. The envelope was wrapped in a waterproof sleeve, and I could see the corner of a thick cream-colored folder inside. It had been sent by Calvert University.I carried it back upstairs, and my hands would not stop shaking.Constance did not rush me. She poured me a glass of warm water. "Go ahead and open it."I tore open the seal. The letter inside was beautiful. The university crest was embossed in gold, and my name, Callie Danforth, was printed right on it. I had been accepted into the

The moment I got the notice, my hands shook so hard I could barely hold the paper.Constance stood beside me and gave my shoulder a gentle pat. "Now you've got your path back."I looked down at those few lines of text, and the tears finally fell. It was not because I felt wronged. It was the relief of having survived. After the review came through, my parents came to see me once. We met in the conference room at the police station, since I refused to see them alone.Dad had clearly lost some weight, but the look in his eyes was just as hard as ever.Mom's eyes were swollen, and she started crying the moment she saw me. "Callie, come home with me. Your dad's blood pressure has been high these past few days, and your brother is scared to death. We're a family. How did it come to this?""And after I come home?" I asked. She froze."After I come home, will you let me go to Calvert?" I went on.Her lips moved. "It's so far away. Mom just can't stop worrying..."I laughed. "So noth

Her crying stopped for a moment. I knew I had hit the mark. What truly blew things up was when people online dug up the replay of Mom's livestream. One moment, she had been crying about her ungrateful daughter. The next, the official findings were released, and everything came out, from the Cedar Hollow High’s computer lab IP address to the carrier store's security footage and the counselor's chat history.Public opinion completely flipped. The people who had been trashing me started deleting their comments. Even the family group chat went quiet.Aunt Joyce messaged me privately. [Callie, the grown-ups were only trying to do what was best for you. Don't take things too far.]I did not reply. After Uncle Wayne was called in by the police, he ran into me outside the station. He would not meet my eyes. "Callie, I know I was a little harsh that day, but you're not really going to let your parents end up with a criminal record, are you?"I looked at him. "When you were all blocking

Dad asked, [She changed her password. How do we get in?]Mr. Ormsby replied, [You can reset it with her ID number and applicant ID number. You'll need to figure out how to get the verification code. Can the carrier store handle that?]At 9:20 pm, Mom sent a photo of a ticket number from the carrier store.Mr. Ormsby replied, [Once you have the code, come straight to the school's computer lab. I'll be waiting on the third floor.]At 10:58 pm, Dad wrote, [She posted in her class group chat that she doesn't authorize anyone to make changes.]Mr. Ormsby replied, [Ignore it. If she makes a fuss later, just say she wasn't feeling well and asked her parents to confirm things for her. I only gave guidance.]At 11:44 pm, Mom wrote, [It's done. Teaching program first, nursing second.]Mr. Ormsby replied, [Good. Tomorrow we all stick to the same story. She weighed her options and chose the stable path on her own.]When the chat history was projected onto the screen, no one in the room dar

Constance looked at her. "At 11:30 at night, 20 minutes before the deadline, you went to the school's computer lab to ask for advice?"Mom could not say a word.Mr. Ormsby's expression darkened. "I was in the computer lab that night, but I was helping a few parents with the portal lagging. That doesn't mean I changed Callie's applications."Constance did not argue. She had the tech staff pull the footage from inside the computer lab.The school claimed the lab's interior cameras had "happened to be under maintenance."Constance let out a short laugh. "Then pull the computer usage logs."The lab's management system produced the records quickly.Computer number three had been turned on at 11:38 pm. The account used to log in was gormsby_staff, which was Mr. Ormsby's staff account. At 11:39 pm, it accessed the state application portal. At 11:43 pm, the submission was completed.Every timestamp matched perfectly.Beads of sweat formed on Mr. Ormsby's forehead.Dad suddenly shout
