I walked away from that storage room with my heart still hammering against my ribs, and it had nothing to do with the power outage.

Fuck.

I’d wanted to kiss her so badly I could taste it.

Which was exactly why I needed to get the hell away from her before I did something we’d both regret.

The computer lab was half empty when I got there, just a couple of kids finishing up projects. I found a corner station and pulled out my phone to text her because the password .

What was your password again?

Because my brain is so fried that I have forgotten.

Thanks. Getting the schedule now.

Ok.

I stared at the screen for a second longer than necessary, then shoved my phone back in my pocket and headed to find her locker.

The hallway was mostly cleared out now, just a few stragglers by their lockers. I found hers easily—third row, middle section. I’d memorized the location years ago, not that I’d ever admit that to anyone.

Her combination was her birthday. I’d seen her open it enough time

I quickly wiped at my eyes with the back of my hand as I walked back toward the crowd on unsteady legs, trying to pull myself together before anyone noticed. The last thing I needed was questions I couldn’t answer.“Hey.”I spun around. Luca was leaning against the fence separating the parking lot from the football field.“Hey yourself.”“You have disappeared for twenty minutes and now you are back looking like you’ve been crying.” He pushed off the fence and sauntered toward me. “Let me guess—finally realized you’re actually going to miss me?”“In your dreams, Archer.”“Oh, I have much better dreams than that, Lilypad.” His eyes glittered with mischief. “Want me to tell you about them?”Heat flooded my cheeks. “You’re disgusting.”“And you’re deflecting.” He stopped in front of me, close enough that I had to tilt my head back to meet his eyes. “So what’s with the waterworks? Did you actually get emotional during the ceremony.”“Maybe I did. Is that a crime?”“For you? Yeah, actually.

My brain short-circuited. “His mother?”“Victoria Archer. I realize we haven’t met.” She extended a perfectly manicured hand. I shook her hand, trying to process this. Luca had mentioned his biological mother exactly once, and only to say she’d left when he was young.I stared at her, searching for traces of Luca in her face. The bone structure was there, the dark hair, the same eyes.“It’s nice to meet you,” I managed.“Walk with me.” It wasn’t a request. We walked toward the parking lot, away from the crowds. She moved with the same predatory grace I’d seen in Luca, but where his felt protective, hers felt calculating.“You’re probably wondering why I’m here,” she said.“The thought crossed my mind.”“I’ll be direct,” she said. “I need your help.”I stopped walking. “What kind of help?”“My son has some… misguided ideas about his future. Volleyball, apparently.” She said it like it was a disease. “I’m here to convince him to pursue something more practical than this silly obsession

Graduation day. Finally.I smoothed down my cap for what felt like the hundredth time, trying to ignore the butterflies doing aerial stunts in my stomach. The auditorium was packed—parents with cameras, siblings fidgeting in their seats, teachers trying to look dignified while herding us graduates like cattle.“Lily!” I turned to see my Mum and Dad pushing through the crowd, both of them beaming like I’d just won the Nobel Prize.“There’s our graduate,” Dad said, pulling me into a hug that lifted me off my feet. “We’re so proud of you, sweetheart.”“Thanks, Dad.” I hugged him back, breathing in his familiar aftershave. “Where’s your good camera? I know you brought it.”“Already got it.” He patted the camera bag slung over his shoulder. “I’m documenting everything. First day of the rest of your life and all that.”“Don’t be dramatic,” Mom said, but she was tearing up. “I can’t believe my baby is graduating.”“Mom, please don’t cry. You’ll make me cry, and then my makeup will be ruined.

“I don’t know,” I said again, because it was easier than the truth. In the darkness, I heard him take a shaky breath.“I never wanted to scare you,” he said quietly. “That night, when I told you… I should have been more careful. I should have—”“You should have what? Lied to me?”“I should have thought about how it would affect you. How it would change things between us.”“Things were already changing.”“Were they?”“You know they were.”Before he could respond, we heard voices in the hallway—muffled but getting closer.“Hello?” someone called. “Is anyone down here?”“We’re here!” I shouted, scrambling to my feet. “In storage room B-12!”“Hang on!” The voice was getting closer. “We’re getting the manual override!”A few minutes later, the door swung open, and a maintenance worker with a flashlight appeared in the doorway.“You two okay?” he asked, shining the light between us.“Fine,” I said, blinking in the sudden brightness. “Just stuck.”“Power’s out in the whole building. Should b

The storage room plunged into complete darkness, and I mean complete. Like someone had dropped a black curtain over the world and called it a day.“Shit,” Luca muttered from somewhere behind me.I stood perfectly still, the box of programs clutched in my arms, trying to process what had just happened. The emergency lighting should have kicked in by now. Schools had backup systems for this kind of thing, right?“Power’s out again,” Luca said, stating the obvious. “Must be the whole building this time.”“Great,” I said, my voice coming out steadier than I felt. “Just fantastic.”I heard him moving around, probably feeling for the door. A few seconds later came the sound of the handle turning, then nothing.“Lily.”“Yeah?”“The door’s locked.”“What do you mean locked?”“I mean the electronic lock engaged when the power went out. We’re stuck.”I set the box down carefully, my hands already starting to shake. “That’s not possible. There have to be manual overrides or something.”“Feel fre
