Walking back to campus at six in the morning felt like moving through some kind of alternate reality where everything looked exactly the same but nothing actually was. The sun was just starting to peek, and there were already a few dedicated runners out doing their morning routes.

Riley walked slightly ahead of us, constantly scanning our surroundings like he expected something to jump out from behind every building.

Ethan was helping Naomi stay steady on her feet, one arm around her waist because she was still shaky and weak. She kept stopping every few steps to catch her breath, and her face was still pale enough that I was worried she might collapse before we made it back to the dorms.

“I want to go back to my own room,” Naomi said when we reached the split in the path that led either toward Hamilton Hall or Peterson Hall where her dorm was located. Her voice was tired and strained. “I just need some time alone to process everything that’s happened.”

The building was completely empty when I arrived, which was exactly what I’d been hoping for. I needed time to examine the bodies without having to explain what exactly I was looking for to Dr. Dooley until I had concrete evidence to support them.I used my keycard to access the basement level where the forensic lab was located.Melody Reeves’ body was still in cold storage where we’d left her yesterday, and I wheeled her out to one of the examination tables with hands that were shaking slightly from anticipation and nervousness.I started with a systematic external examination, checking her arms and legs and torso for any marks I might have missed during our previous analysis. Her skin was pale and unmarked except for normal signs of daily wear - a small scar on her knee that looked old, some freckles across her shoulders, nothing that indicated trauma or violence. But now I knew to look in places where bite marks would be deliberately concealed.I lifted Melody’s hair and examined h

After Riley and Ethan left, Jessica came out of the shower and was sitting on her bed lacing up her running shoes, getting ready for her usual morning jog around campus.“I’ll be back in about an hour,” she said, grabbing her water bottle and headphones. “Naomi, try to get some rest, okay?”“Thanks, I will,”“I’m just going to use the bathroom real quick,” I told Naomi, who was curled up on my bed looking like she might fall asleep any second.“Don’t take forever,” she mumbled into my pillow. “I want to talk to you about some stuff before I pass out.”I locked the bathroom door behind me and immediately started unwrapping the gauze I’d hastily applied to my hand hours earlier. What I expected to see was a deep gash that probably needed proper medical attention, maybe some swelling or redness that would indicate infectionWhat I actually saw made me stare at my palm for a full minute, convinced I was looking at the wrong hand. The cut was still there—but faint. A thin, pink line where

“Jonathan is a vampire. So are the things that have been killing people around Eugene. I’ve been tracking them for three years, ever since they killed my sister.”The room went completely silent except for the steady beeping of the heart monitor. I stared at Riley, trying to process what he’d just said while my brain struggled to connect this information with the guy who used to make terrible jokes during volleyball practice and who had spent most of senior year trying to work up the courage to ask Naomi out.“Riley, what are you talking about?” Naomi asked, her voice barely above a whisper. “Your sister died in a car accident. That’s what you told us when you transferred to our school.”“That’s what I told everyone because saying ‘my sister was murdered by blood-sucking monsters’ doesn’t exactly help you make friends at a new school,” Riley said, and his voice was flat and tired in a way that was nothing like the easy-going guy I remembered from senior year.I was having trouble reco

I must have dozed off in the uncomfortable plastic chair sometime around three in the morning, because the next thing I knew, someone was squeezing my hand and saying my name in a voice that sounded like they’d been gargling sandpaper for hours.“Lily? Lily, wake up.”I opened my eyes to find Naomi staring at me with a confused, disoriented expression. Her face was still pale as paper, but all the signs of those horrible black veins that had been spreading across her skin were completely gone, and her eyes looked clear and alert instead of that terrifying blank stare she’d had in the coffee shop.“Oh thank god, you’re awake,” I said, sitting up so fast that my neck cracked from sleeping at such an awkward angle. “How do you feel? Are you in pain? Do you remember what happened to us?”Naomi was quiet for a long moment, staring at the ceiling tiles.“I remember everything,” she said finally,. “The coffee shop, Jonathan attacking you, me jumping between you two like some kind of idiot. B

I was thinking frantically, trying to remember everything I’d learned about toxins and venoms and how they moved through the human circulatory system. The way the black veins were spreading suggested that whatever was in Naomi’s system was being carried by her blood, which meant it was contaminating her entire cardiovascular system“It’s acting like a hemotoxin,” I said, more to myself than to anyone else as I paced around the examination room. “Something that’s breaking down her red blood cells and spreading through her cardiovascular system faster than her body can filter it out.”“Lily, what are you talking about?” Ethan asked, but I was already moving toward the supply cabinets along the wall.“I need sterile scalpels, surgical tubing, blood collection bags, gauze and antiseptic. Help me find them now.”“You absolutely cannot perform surgery on your friend,” the nurse said, stepping between me and the supplies. “You’re eighteen years old and you’re not a licensed medical professio
