“Lily, sweetheart, I still don’t understand why you can’t come home for your birthday,” my mom’s voice came through my phone as I balanced it between my shoulder and ear while trying to apply mascara without poking my eye out. “Nineteen is a big age, and your father and I had this whole dinner planned at that Italian place you used to love.”

I paused with the mascara wand halfway to my lashes, thinking of the perfect reply for her.

“I know, Mom, and I’m really sorry about missing dinner,” I said, trying to sound appropriately disappointed instead of relieved. “But this summer research program is incredibly competitive. My professor specifically recommended me based on my GPA, and missing any of the mandatory weekend sessions could really hurt my chances of getting into a good graduate program.”

Which was completely true. Dean’s list both semesters freshman year, a 3.9 GPA, and glowing recommendations from multiple professors had opened doors I never could have imagined. Sometimes I s

“And this,” Maya said, stepping forward, “is Maya Blackthorne, Lucas’s fiancée and Director of Research Operations.”Oh, wonderful. Because this day couldn’t possibly get any better. The lab went completely quiet for about three seconds before everyone started talking at once about how perfect they looked together and congratulations and all that garbage people say when they see attractive couples in expensive suits.I kept my face completely neutral while internally noting that Maya looked old enough to be his mother, which honestly wasn’t that much of an exaggeration. Well maybe it is but she had to be at least three years older than. At least to my eyesShe had her manicured hand wrapped around Luca’s arm in a way that screamed “this is mine and don’t you forget it,” but I noticed he wasn’t exactly leaning into the contact. His eyes kept drifting over to me like he was conducting some kind of psychological experiment to see how I’d react to this little announcement.Sorry to disapp

“Lily?” Dr. Dooley’s voice cut through my spinning thoughts. “You look a bit pale. Are you feeling alright?”I realized that everyone in the lab was looking at me, probably because I’d been standing there gripping the work station like it was the only thing keeping me upright, which wasn’t far from the truth.“I’m fine,” I said, forcing myself to let go of the table and stand up straighter. “Just surprised by the news.”“Well, I hope it’s a pleasant surprise,” Dr. Dooley said with a smile that suggested she had no idea that her exciting opportunity was actually the latest move in whatever chess game Luca was playing with my life. “This is truly a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for undergraduate researchers,”I felt like I was watching my life e get completely hijacked in real time. If I participated in this collaboration, I’d have to see Luca every day, pretend to work him,. If I refused to participate, I’d be the only research assistant who turned down a career-defining opportunity w

  • My Arch Nemesis in my Bed   Chapter 108

I made it back to campus Sunday night feeling like my head was spinning from everything I’d learned, or more accurately, everything I’d confirmed that I didn’t actually know about my own life. The two-hour drive back had given me way too much time to think about my mom’s panicked expression and all the careful non-answers my parents had given me.The first thing I did when I got back to the dorm was send a text to our group chat asking everyone to meet in my room. I needed to talk through what had happened this weekend, and honestly I needed people who knew me well enough to tell me if I was completely losing my mind or if my suspicions were actually reasonable.Jessica was making popcorn when everyone started showing up, clearly thinking this was going to be some kind of casual hangout. She wasn’t really paying attention to the conversation, just humming along to whatever music was playing through her earbuds.Naomi arrived first and immediately flopped onto my bed like she owned it,

  • My Arch Nemesis in my Bed   Chapter 107

I woke up from that dream feeling like my entire world had shifted sideways, and not in a good way. The phantom sensations were still clinging to my skin, making me feel gross and confused and angry all at the same time.It took that to work up the courage to do what I knew I had to do next.Cain’s words kept echoing in my head - “ask your family a few questions” and “there’s quite a lot they’ve been keeping from you” - until I couldn’t focus on anything else. It kept playing on repeat every time I tried to think about something else.“I need to go home this weekend,” I announced to Jessica.“Random,” she said, applying mascara. “This sudden urge to visit the family wouldn’t have anything to do with your mysterious late-night internet research, would it”“I just need to see my parents,” I said, which was true even if it left out the part about interrogating them for information they’d apparently been hiding from me for years. “It’s been too long since I’ve been home.”The problem was,
