Chapter 2

Auteur: Saffron Fish
But this time, I stopped my dad before he could say anything.

I guided Mia to the couch in the living room and poured her a cup of warm water.

I calmly said, “Mia, you can stay here. You’re my friend, and I can’t just leave you with nowhere to go. But I need to make something clear first. If you stay here, you have to follow my family’s rules.”

Mia was stunned for a moment. She had clearly not expected me, the person who was usually very easy to talk to, to act so serious and formal. However, she quickly nodded. “Charlotte, tell me. I promise I won’t cause you any trouble.”

“First, my dad has severe neurasthenia. The doctor said he needs complete rest. So, except for meals and bathroom breaks, please stay in the guest room as much as possible. Don’t make noise in the living room, and don’t yell or make a scene.

“Second, my dad is too honest and trusting. If you need anything, even something as small as changing a light bulb or getting a tissue, call me or send me a message. Don’t bother my dad.

“Third, don’t go through things that don’t belong to you. Especially the master bedroom. You’re absolutely not allowed inside. Can you do that?”

A flicker of surprise and displeasure crossed Mia’s eyes, but she was still a natural actress. She immediately bit her lip and nodded. Her expression was full of hurt and innocence.

“I understand, Charlotte. I’m sorry for disturbing your dad’s rest. I’ll keep quiet.”

My dad frowned as he listened. He tugged at my sleeve. “Charlotte, how can you talk to her like that? Mia is already having a hard time—”

“Dad.”

I turned to look at him. My expression was firm and left no room for discussion.

“Rules are rules. Without rules, there is no order. Go back to sleep. Don’t worry about this.”

After I settled Mia in, I made an excuse to go to the kitchen for some water. I stood behind the door and watched coldly as Mia locked herself inside the guest room.

I did not know this in my past life, but this time, I knew exactly what was currently happening. At this very moment, behind that door, the girl who kept saying she was afraid of a creep was frantically texting her unemployed boyfriend, Kyle Walker.

If I was right, her message was probably something like this.

[Done. I’m already living here. This old man looks so stupid and easy to fool. Charlotte is acting weird today, though. She’s such a pain.]

I stood in the darkness of the kitchen with a glass of water in my hand and laughed quietly.

I thought, “Lie all you want. Go ahead and scheme as much as you like.”

The plans they had used against me in my past life could happen all over again. But this time, the roles of hunter and prey would be reversed.

On the second morning after Mia moved in, I requested three days off from work.

As soon as Mia left the house for “work,” which was actually just an excuse to meet Kyle and discuss how to set me up, I immediately contacted the most reputable security company in the city.

“Sir, I want the highest-definition hidden cameras you have. They need night vision and audio recording. They have to be small and discreet. No one should be able to find them easily.”

I pointed out several important locations in the apartment.

The technician was clearly experienced. He worked quickly and efficiently.

In less than half a day, tiny cameras no bigger than black dots were installed in the shadow of the living room chandelier, behind the plants in the hallway where no one usually looked, and inside the face of the antique clock that faced the guest room door.

The three cameras covered every corner of the shared areas except the bedrooms and bathroom. There were no blind spots.

All the footage was sent in real time to a newly purchased encrypted hard drive with a large storage capacity and my backup phone.

My dad watched the workers move in and out of the apartment. His face was full of confusion. “Charlotte, why are we installing all this? It looks like we’re trying to protect ourselves from thieves.”

“Dad, that’s exactly what we’re doing.”

I pulled him down onto the couch. My expression was serious.

“Recently, there have been three break-ins in this old neighborhood. Some of them even involved knives. The neighborhood committee sent out a notice this morning. I’m scared. You’re home alone, so how could I possibly feel at ease?”

People from my dad’s generation were especially worried about safety issues. After hearing that, his expression became serious too.

I took his hand and carefully set the rules he needed to follow.

“Dad, this is for your safety and for the sake of our family. You have to promise me a few things. This is a matter of life and death, so please don’t brush it off.

“First, whenever I’m not home, lock the door to the master bedroom immediately. No matter who knocks, no matter what Mia says outside, even if she says the house is on fire, do not open the door or respond. Call me right away.

“Second, when I’m not home, you must never be alone with Mia in the same room, whether it’s the living room or the kitchen.

“Third, never accept any food or drinks from Mia. Even if it’s just a piece of candy, you absolutely cannot eat or drink anything she gives you.”

One year later, our lives had completely returned to peace. In fact, they had become even better than they were in my past life.Mia’s time in prison was far from easy.I heard that she could not handle the hardship of prison life and tried to fake an illness to avoid labor. The guards quickly saw through her act. Not only did she lose points for misconduct, but she also received additional time after getting into a fight with another inmate. When she would finally be released, the criminal record for extortion would follow her for the rest of her life. She would have no choice but to struggle at the lowest level of society. As for me, my calm response under pressure and my strong crisis management skills during the incident caught the attention of the company’s senior executives. I was promoted directly to department director, and my salary doubled. In the first month after taking my new position, I decisively sold the old house that held so many painful memories.I put in som

I rejected every single request and left them with only one sentence. “See you in court.”As for the neighborhood committee, I took the evidence directly to the higher-level community office.I filed a real-name report against Rebecca and the others for their failure to act, their malicious attempts at mediation, and their favoritism toward the people who caused trouble. Two days later, Rebecca was transferred to another position and received an official disciplinary notice within the community. She completely lost her reputation among the neighbors who had known her for years. That weekend, I posted a long article on my social media titled “Kindness Should Never Become a Shelter for Criminals.”In the article, I documented the entire incident in detail. I also shared some edited screenshots from the surveillance footage and discussed how easy it was to spread false accusations online and how terrifying online harassment could be.[Had I not installed surveillance cameras, had my

They were carrying several bags of fruit that were clearly not very fresh. Their faces were covered with awkward smiles.“Um… Charlotte, I was wrong about your dad. Things just got so out of hand. I was fooled by that woman too. Take these oranges. Please apologize to your dad for me. Let’s just put this behind us, okay?”Rebecca tried to force the bags of fruit into my hands.I stood coldly at the doorway like a wall. I did not let them take even one step inside.“Mrs. Watson, my dad almost jumped off a building because of your so-called ‘neutral judgment.’ Anyone can spread a rumor with a few words, but clearing someone’s name takes endless effort. “Do you really think a few careless apologies and a few cheap oranges can restore my dad’s innocence?”I pushed the oranges back toward her without hesitation.I coldly said, “People have to pay a price for the things they do wrong. Take your fruit and leave. Wait for the lawyer’s letter from my legal team. I have kept all the evid

I nodded and turned toward the door of the interview room.Outside, several small influencers were still gathered there. They had come over to livestream the situation and gain some views. A group of curious watchers had also stayed behind to watch the drama unfold.I suddenly pulled open the door and swept my cold gaze across the people holding up their phones.“Everyone who called my father a ‘monster’ outside the neighborhood just now, as well as every influencer and online gossip account that spread false rumors, has been recorded. “My legal team has already preserved your usernames and screenshots of your posts, and everything has been notarized.”My voice was not loud, but it carried a chilling sense of menace.“You chased after views and fed off someone else’s suffering. You nearly drove an innocent elderly man to his death just because you wanted attention. “Now that the truth has come out, you think you can just walk away and pretend nothing happened? Dream on.“I’m

The interview room fell into a deathly silence.Even Ethan, who had seen countless cases before, widened his eyes in shock. Mia, who had been pretending to be a helpless victim moments ago, looked like a vicious monster on the screen. The surveillance footage continued playing. After Mia ended the call, she gritted her teeth and walked over to the coffee table. She took a deep breath. Then, she closed her eyes and slammed the outside of her thigh against the sharp corner of the hard marble table.Mia’s face twisted in pain. She crouched on the floor and rubbed her leg for a long time. Then, she walked over to the hallway door frame, pulled up her sleeve, and forcefully rubbed and hit her arm against the wooden frame. She had created those horrifying “injuries” herself.Throughout the entire process, my dad, the man she accused of being a “monster,” stayed asleep inside his locked bedroom. He never showed up.The technician pressed the pause button. The screen froze on Mia’s fac

Ethan knocked on the table and looked at me with sharp eyes.“Charlotte, Mia Sullivan has accused your father, Zach Langley, of forcibly harassing her and attempting to assault her between 11:00 p.m. and 2:00 a.m. on October 14th. What do you have to say for him?“The public attention surrounding this case is enormous. If your father refuses to cooperate with the investigation, we will take compulsory measures and bring him in for questioning.”I did not say a word. I calmly unzipped my handbag and took out a black Western Digital high-capacity hard drive. It was sealed inside an anti-magnetic protective case.I gently slid the hard drive across the table to Ethan.“Officer, there’s no need for me to explain anything. This is the original surveillance footage from my home during the exact time she claims the incident took place. Please examine it.”“Surveillance footage?!”The moment those words were spoken, Mia, who had been fake crying just moments before, suddenly jolted. She
