Chapter 5

I opened the video.

On the screen, Mia had no makeup on. Her hair was messy, and her face was as pale as a sheet of paper.

She cried in front of the camera. Her entire body shook from her sobs. She wore an oversized white shirt.

As she continued crying, the collar slipped down and revealed large areas of shocking bruises on her shoulders, arms, and thighs.

The video contained an audio recording that had been maliciously edited and muted. Only broken sobs and sounds that resembled a struggle could be heard.

“I really have nowhere else to go… I treated her as my best friend, but her dad took advantage of the fact that she wasn’t home. He forced open the door to my room in the middle of the night…

“He pushed me onto the bed… I fought with everything I had. I begged him to let me go, but he said he had a pension. He said he would buy me expensive bags as long as I listened to him…

“I didn’t dare call the police. They know a lot of people around here. I was afraid they would come after me. Can someone please help me?”

Every word sounded heartbreaking. Every sentence cut deep.

The comment section was in complete chaos. A wave of anger swept across the internet.

[What a monster! He’s already in his sixties and is still acting like this? He should be punished!]

[Look at the bruises on this girl. How much force did he use? That sick old man should rot!]

[Does anyone know this father and daughter? Find out who they are! People like this don’t deserve to live in society!]

[She even targeted her own best friend. His daughter probably isn’t innocent either. Maybe she was helping him!]

Less than thirty minutes later, my dad’s and my personal information had been exposed online.

Our home address, the school where my dad had worked before he retired, and my workplace were all posted online.

Just then, the receptionist from my company rushed into our department. Her face was covered in sweat.

“Charlotte, something terrible happened! The company’s main phone line has been flooded with calls. They’re all insults directed at you. Someone even sent death threats into the mailbox outside our office.

“The boss wants you to stop working immediately and go home to handle this!”

I took a deep breath. I closed my laptop and calmly packed my bag.

That suffocating feeling I knew all too well. That familiar online frenzy.

Kyle, Mia’s unemployed boyfriend, was also the leader of a paid online smear campaign. In my past life, he was the one who planned and controlled everything behind the scenes.

I took a cab back to the neighborhood as fast as I could.

The moment I reached the entrance, I saw an absurd scene.

Kyle wore a black T-shirt with the word “Justice” printed on it. Behind him stood five or six troublemakers with brightly dyed hair and cigarettes in their mouths.

They held a black-and-white banner.

[Punish the Monster, Zach Langley! Give the Victim Justice!]

They had blocked the entrance to the neighborhood with two old vans.

Kyle held up a selfie stick and livestreamed the scene with excitement.

“Everyone watching, this is the neighborhood where the monster lives!

“Today, we’re here to demand answers! If they don’t pay Mia five hundred thousand dollars for emotional damages and kneel to apologize, this matter is not over! Everyone, type ‘Justice Will Prevail’ in the comments!”

A large crowd had already gathered outside the entrance. Rebecca Watson from the neighborhood committee stood among them with a red armband on her arm. She pretended to be reasonable as she shared her opinion.

“I knew it. Mr. Langley always looked like such an upright person, but who could have guessed what he was really like behind closed doors? There’s no smoke without fire.

“Why would an innocent young woman ruin her own reputation by making something like this up?”

I pushed through the crowd and called my dad first.

On the other end, my dad’s voice was filled with panic. “Charlotte, why is it so noisy outside? Mia suddenly ran out earlier and said she wanted to die. What happened?”

“Dad, listen to me.”

My voice was cold and firm.

“Right now, lock the master bedroom door. Put on your noise-canceling headphones and turn the volume all the way up.

“No matter what happens outside, no matter who knocks on the door, even if it’s the police, do not open the door unless you hear my voice. Do you understand?”

My dad did not know what was happening, but he understood the seriousness in my voice.

“Okay. I’ll listen to you. The door is locked.”

After I hung up, I fixed my hair and walked toward Kyle’s livestream camera in my high heels.

My appearance made the noisy crowd fall silent for a second.

“You still have the nerve to come back?!”

One year later, our lives had completely returned to peace. In fact, they had become even better than they were in my past life.Mia’s time in prison was far from easy.I heard that she could not handle the hardship of prison life and tried to fake an illness to avoid labor. The guards quickly saw through her act. Not only did she lose points for misconduct, but she also received additional time after getting into a fight with another inmate. When she would finally be released, the criminal record for extortion would follow her for the rest of her life. She would have no choice but to struggle at the lowest level of society. As for me, my calm response under pressure and my strong crisis management skills during the incident caught the attention of the company’s senior executives. I was promoted directly to department director, and my salary doubled. In the first month after taking my new position, I decisively sold the old house that held so many painful memories.I put in som

I rejected every single request and left them with only one sentence. “See you in court.”As for the neighborhood committee, I took the evidence directly to the higher-level community office.I filed a real-name report against Rebecca and the others for their failure to act, their malicious attempts at mediation, and their favoritism toward the people who caused trouble. Two days later, Rebecca was transferred to another position and received an official disciplinary notice within the community. She completely lost her reputation among the neighbors who had known her for years. That weekend, I posted a long article on my social media titled “Kindness Should Never Become a Shelter for Criminals.”In the article, I documented the entire incident in detail. I also shared some edited screenshots from the surveillance footage and discussed how easy it was to spread false accusations online and how terrifying online harassment could be.[Had I not installed surveillance cameras, had my

They were carrying several bags of fruit that were clearly not very fresh. Their faces were covered with awkward smiles.“Um… Charlotte, I was wrong about your dad. Things just got so out of hand. I was fooled by that woman too. Take these oranges. Please apologize to your dad for me. Let’s just put this behind us, okay?”Rebecca tried to force the bags of fruit into my hands.I stood coldly at the doorway like a wall. I did not let them take even one step inside.“Mrs. Watson, my dad almost jumped off a building because of your so-called ‘neutral judgment.’ Anyone can spread a rumor with a few words, but clearing someone’s name takes endless effort. “Do you really think a few careless apologies and a few cheap oranges can restore my dad’s innocence?”I pushed the oranges back toward her without hesitation.I coldly said, “People have to pay a price for the things they do wrong. Take your fruit and leave. Wait for the lawyer’s letter from my legal team. I have kept all the evid

I nodded and turned toward the door of the interview room.Outside, several small influencers were still gathered there. They had come over to livestream the situation and gain some views. A group of curious watchers had also stayed behind to watch the drama unfold.I suddenly pulled open the door and swept my cold gaze across the people holding up their phones.“Everyone who called my father a ‘monster’ outside the neighborhood just now, as well as every influencer and online gossip account that spread false rumors, has been recorded. “My legal team has already preserved your usernames and screenshots of your posts, and everything has been notarized.”My voice was not loud, but it carried a chilling sense of menace.“You chased after views and fed off someone else’s suffering. You nearly drove an innocent elderly man to his death just because you wanted attention. “Now that the truth has come out, you think you can just walk away and pretend nothing happened? Dream on.“I’m

The interview room fell into a deathly silence.Even Ethan, who had seen countless cases before, widened his eyes in shock. Mia, who had been pretending to be a helpless victim moments ago, looked like a vicious monster on the screen. The surveillance footage continued playing. After Mia ended the call, she gritted her teeth and walked over to the coffee table. She took a deep breath. Then, she closed her eyes and slammed the outside of her thigh against the sharp corner of the hard marble table.Mia’s face twisted in pain. She crouched on the floor and rubbed her leg for a long time. Then, she walked over to the hallway door frame, pulled up her sleeve, and forcefully rubbed and hit her arm against the wooden frame. She had created those horrifying “injuries” herself.Throughout the entire process, my dad, the man she accused of being a “monster,” stayed asleep inside his locked bedroom. He never showed up.The technician pressed the pause button. The screen froze on Mia’s fac

Ethan knocked on the table and looked at me with sharp eyes.“Charlotte, Mia Sullivan has accused your father, Zach Langley, of forcibly harassing her and attempting to assault her between 11:00 p.m. and 2:00 a.m. on October 14th. What do you have to say for him?“The public attention surrounding this case is enormous. If your father refuses to cooperate with the investigation, we will take compulsory measures and bring him in for questioning.”I did not say a word. I calmly unzipped my handbag and took out a black Western Digital high-capacity hard drive. It was sealed inside an anti-magnetic protective case.I gently slid the hard drive across the table to Ethan.“Officer, there’s no need for me to explain anything. This is the original surveillance footage from my home during the exact time she claims the incident took place. Please examine it.”“Surveillance footage?!”The moment those words were spoken, Mia, who had been fake crying just moments before, suddenly jolted. She
