Chapter 2

Author: Ding
This time, I watched Madison fall into Liam's arms without any expression on my face. I didn't miss the flicker of emotion in his eyes. But the next second, he glanced at me quickly and pushed her away.

"That's not funny. Apologize to my wife. Clean off the stamp and redo her makeup."

"No need," I said calmly. I took a makeup wipe and cleaned my forehead.

Liam looked relieved. He patted Madison's head gently. "Aren't you going to thank my wife? She's so soft-hearted..."

I interrupted him. "Liam, don't bother redoing the makeup. The wedding is canceled."

Liam stared at me in disbelief. Then he laughed. "That's not funny."

"It's not a joke." I took off the wedding dress he'd had flown in from overseas and dropped it on the floor like trash. "Wedding's off. We're done." I put on my jacket and headed for the door.

"Sophia!" Liam finally realized I was serious. He grabbed my wrist, veins bulging on his forehead. "You're calling off our wedding because of a makeup artist's joke?"

His blue eyes were full of hurt. "Don't do this. We put everything into this wedding. All our friends and family are here..."

I shook off his hand, ignoring the whispers around us. "Liam, you know exactly why I'm doing this. I'm giving you a chance to be with the person you really want."

I thought I'd see panic on his face. But he just looked confused and wronged. "Sophia, what are you talking about? Everyone knows I love you more than anything."

He pointed at Madison. "It's because of her, isn't it?" He sighed. "I didn't know she was going to pull that joke. And I already told her to apologize. If you're still not happy, I'll fire her."

Madison burst into tears and ran out. Liam didn't even glance at her. He just looked deep into my eyes. "Alright now?"

I didn't say yes or no.

Liam's parents walked in. Helen spoke first, with a tone of complaint. "Sophia, Liam already apologized. Don't push it too far. You know how good he's been to you. Don't forget who paid for your mother's surgery and treatment. You shouldn't be ungrateful."

My heart ached. My mother had suffered a brain hemorrhage because of Madison. At my wedding to my ex, Madison had shown everyone their bed photos and run off with him, leaving me a laughingstock. My mother collapsed. To pay for her treatment, I'd moved to this city and met Liam.

I knew what Helen was really saying. Their family had influence. If I embarrassed them today, they would kick my mother out of their hospital.

"Mom!" Liam interrupted her gently. "Sophia is my wife. Her mother is my mother-in-law. This is my responsibility." He turned to me, pleading. "Honey, at least for the sake of me saving your mother—don't cause a scene today, okay?"

I clenched my fists and put on a hurt expression. "Liam... are you sure you don't know that makeup artist? She whispered to me that you told her to give me that ugly stamp to get back at me. That's why I got angry."

The guests who had been frowning at me now looked sympathetic. Liam's mouth twitched. He forced a comforting smile. "She's lying. She's just jealous that you married well."

When I remained silent, he promised, "I'll report her right now. Okay?"

I finally smiled. "Then swear it. Swear that if you've been with her and betrayed me, we'll divorce."

Liam raised his hand and swore. The guests laughed kindly. "You worry too much. Liam only has eyes for you."

Outside the door, Madison's face flashed by—thwarted and venomous. I pretended not to see.

Epilogue: LiamThe first time I heard her name after the trial, I was mopping the prison hallway. A guard’s radio crackled—someone talking about a small coastal clinic, a doctor who worked for free. “Sophia,” they said. “The one who sent that billionaire down.”I stopped mopping. The bucket of gray water sat still at my feet.Sophia.I hadn’t said her name out loud in three years. Not since the day the bailiffs dragged me away from the courthouse, my knees bruised from kneeling, my throat raw from screaming “I’m sorry” into the air she’d already walked out of.They gave me six years. Wrongful death, patient abandonment, criminal coercion. The judge called me “a predator hiding behind wealth.” My father, Robert, cut a deal and avoided charges. My mother, Helen, stopped visiting after the first month. She sent a letter instead: “You’re dead to us.” I burned it.Madison’s fall—her miscarriage, her broken legs, her suicide—was ruled an accident. No one charged me. But every inmate knew. “

After that, Liam tried to reach me through lawyers. Letters. Meeting requests. I refused them all.On the day of the trial, the courtroom was silent. The verdict was read. Liam was found guilty. The bailiffs moved to take him away.Suddenly, he broke free. "Sophia!" He ran toward me and fell to his knees."I'm sorry." His voice broke. "I was wrong. She lied to me. Everything—it was all her lies. I thought—I really thought—" He couldn't finish. He just kept saying, "I'm sorry. If I could do it over—I'd never believe her. I'd never hurt you."I looked at him. "Liam. You had every chance to check the truth. You never did."His face went pale."Were you really deceived? Or did you just need an excuse to cheat?"He froze. The bailiffs dragged him away, still screaming my name.I didn't look back. I walked out of the courthouse. The sun hit my face, warm and bright, unlike any light I'd felt in the months I'd spent drowning in fear and grief. I took a deep breath, the scent of fresh grass an

The moment I left Liam's house, I used every connection I had. For one thing only: justice for my mother.Lawyers worked through the night. The case moved fast. Faster than anyone expected. The hospital was investigated. Liam was suspended. His name was everywhere—"cheater," "abuser," "murderer."Madison was also exposed. She became a pariah.I heard later that Liam had a huge fight with her. In the struggle, he pushed her. She fell down a flight of stairs. Madison hemorrhaged. Doctors rushed her into surgery. Liam refused to sign the consent forms. He said he wanted her to pay. The baby died. So did her womb. When I heard the news, I felt nothing. Just a vague sense of irony. Last time, I had lost everything.I went to see Madison in the hospital. When she saw me, she screamed, cursed, and tried to throw herself at me. But her legs were broken. She'd probably never walk again.I stood in the doorway and looked down at her. "Madison. Why? What did I ever do to make you hate me so much?

Third-Person POVLiam got into his car and told the driver, "To the hospital."The nurse looked surprised. "Mr. Liam—didn't you already have the patient transferred out?""What are you talking about?""We received a voice message from you. It was your voice. You told us to transfer Mrs. Sophia's mother out. There was no receiving hospital. She died on the spot. The body was sent away."Liam's blood ran cold. He had Kevin play the message. It was his voice—sent by Madison."Madison?" He felt sick. "Investigate everything—Madison and Sophia's past. Now."He remembered Sophia's face when she learned her mother had died. The panic, the pain. Something was very, very wrong. He went home. The house was too quiet. He sat on the couch and looked at the gift box. He'd thrown it aside earlier. Now he picked it up and opened it.Inside were divorce papers and printed chat logs—Madison's messages to Sophia.[Bestie, I tested him for you. This one's no good.]Attached: a photo of Madison kissing a

  • My Best Friend Steals My Lovers   Chapter 5

Third-Person POVLiam smiled as Madison blew out her candles and cut the cake. But he was annoyed. Sophia still hadn't shown up at the party. He'd scared her enough. He just wanted her to apologize to Madison and put the past behind them. Was that so hard?A guard rushed in. Liam's eyes lit up—then darkened when he saw Sophia wasn't there."Where is Sophia?"The guards were sweating. They handed him the box. "It's a gift from the madam. She asked you to open it."Liam took the box, glanced at it, and tossed it aside. "What's in here? Necklaces? Jewelry?" he sneered. "Tell Sophia she can't buy our forgiveness with cheap trinkets. She has to come here and apologize in person."The guard stammered. "But... the madam is gone. We can't find her.""What?" Liam's face darkened. "She thinks running away will make me drop this?" He calmed himself. "Fine. If she wants to run, let her. She cares about her mother, doesn't she? Tell the hospital to stop treatment. Then text her—she can have it back

  • My Best Friend Steals My Lovers   Chapter 4

I don't know how long I was in there. Then the freezer door opened. Madison rushed over, looking concerned."Bestie, are you okay? Come on, let's get you to the hospital."Her face was so caring. It felt surreal. "Madison, why are you doing this to me? What did I ever do to you?" My voice broke. If I hated anyone, it was Madison more than Liam. We'd grown up together. We were best friends. I'd stepped in to protect her from bullies. She'd held my arm and said we'd be together forever. And yet, she had stabbed me in the heart over and over again.Madison put on her wounded look. "I was just afraid you'd be hurt by bad men. I wanted to find you a husband who truly loves and trusts you.""See? This time, if I hadn't tested him, you would have married a bad man. What if some other woman told you lies like that later?"I pushed her away, sobbing. "You don't do this to help me. You've hurt me again and again."She blinked innocently. "Okay, okay, I'm wrong. Let's go to the hospital."She dra
