Elena Carson

It’s been two weeks.

Two weeks of trying to re-establish some kind of normalcy. I go to class, sit in the back row, take notes like my life depends on it, and leave the second the lecture ends. I study until my eyes burn and my head throbs.

I avoid lingering anywhere near Killian’s office or the paths he usually takes across campus. It’s exhausting, but it’s necessary. Or at least that’s what I keep telling myself.

The worst part is how I still see him almost every day.

Elena Carson It’s Friday evening, and the sky is already bleeding into soft pinks and oranges as I stand in front of my mirror, smoothing down the long peach sundress with its thin straps. I run my fingers through my hair, letting it fall loose over my shoulders. Nora and Nolan are going away for the weekend on some trip he planned. They were supposed to leave in the afternoon, but Nora insisted they wait until evening so she could personally make sure I actually went to see my mom and didn’t bail the second she was out of town. She’s even dropping me off at VogueVest on her way to meet Nolan.I grab my handbag and phone and step out of my room.Nora is already waiting in the living room, a small overnight bag packed at her feet. She looks up when I appear and smiles brightly.“I’m ready,” I say.Nora tilts her head, studying me. “You look brighter today.”“Thanks.”We head out together. The evening air is cooler than I expected as we climb into the car. She starts the en

I avoid lingering anywhere near Killian’s office or the paths he usually takes across campus. It’s exhausting, but it’s necessary. Or at least that’s what I keep telling myself. The worst part is how I still see him almost every day. He’s impossible to miss. Tall, composed, always in those dark shirts with the sleeves rolled up. Does he not have any colour besides black?I catch glimpses of him walking across the quad, talking to other professors, or standing by his car in the faculty lot. Each time my stomach twists, a sharp, nauseating mix of longing and shame. I duck behind pillars or change direction like some pathetic spy. I hate myself for it, but I can’t stop.I even turned down Nora when she asked me to join her and Nol

Killian Davenport A few days later… I sit at the front of the lecture hall, laptop open, as I go through the key concepts for the upcoming exam. The room is quieter than usual. Midterms have drained them. Good. They should be drained. But my eyes keep drifting and it’s not to the notes or the eager hands raised in the front rows. To Elena. She sits near the back with her hoodie pulled low and shoulders slightly hunched. She looks tired. The kind of tired that isn’t just from lack of sleep. There are shadows under her eyes that weren’t there before. She hasn’t looked at me once today. Not even when I called on someone else and my gaze lingered too long in her direction.Good, I tell myself. This is protection.I’m protecting her by honoring the distance she asked for. If the public ever found out about us, it would cost her everything. Years of hard work. Her reputation. Her future. People would reduce her to the girl who fucked her way through the class and I don’t want tha

Elena CarsonI wake up to a soft knock on my bedroom door, the sound pulling me out of a restless sleep. My eyes feel heavy and I just lie there for a second. Another knock. Gentler this time.“Elena?” Nora’s voice filters through the wood. “You awake?”I groan softly and force my eyes open. The room is bright with sunlight slicing through the gaps in the curtains. I reach for my phone on the bed beside me, squinting at the screen. 1:07 p.m. My stomach drops. I don’t remember falling asleep so late. Or maybe I just didn’t want to face the thoughts that kept circling all night.“Come in,” I mumble, pushing myself up against the headboard.Nora pokes her head in, her hair still damp from a shower, wearing one of her oversized hoodies. She smiles when she sees me. “Good morning. Or… good afternoon, I guess. I thought you’d be awake by now.”I rub my eyes and swing my legs over the side of the bed. My body feels heavy, tense and sore. And I don’t think it’s because of the cold from

Killian DavenportThe rain is heavier now.It sheets across the windshield in thick, relentless waves as I drive. The wipers work overtime, but the city lights still blur into streaks of gold and red. My hands are tight on the steering wheel. So tight, the leather creaks under my grip.I can still feel her on my fingers. The heat of her. The way she shuddered when I slid my hand between her legs. The soft, broken sound she made when I told her the truth, that she was wet for me, not him. I should regret crossing the line she asked for. I told myself I would stay away. I told myself the distance was necessary.I put my hands on her anyway. The possessiveness is getting harder to justify as simple territorial instinct. It’s no longer just about not wanting another man to have what’s mine. It’s deeper than that, and I don’t like what that implies. I wipe my palm against my thigh as if I can erase the memory of her slickness. It doesn’t work.Still.There is satisfaction sitting low i

Elena CarsonI sneeze for the fifth time tonight as I pull a blue dress out of my wardrobe. The rain is still coming down hard outside, tapping against the windows. I honestly thought Shane would cancel. Any normal person would. Instead, he called moments ago, and told me he’d pick me up in an hour. He sounded excited. I already said yes days ago. Backing out now would make me look flaky, and I’ve been flaky enough lately. So here I am, standing in my bedroom in a thin black night dress that barely reaches mid-thigh, staring at the outfit I was supposed to wear for a man I don’t even like that way.I sit on the edge of the bed and let the dress drop onto my lap. My head feels heavy. My nose is stuffy. I don’t want to go.I like Shane. But every time he looks at me the way he does, all I can think about is grey eyes and a low voice calling me baby while he was buried inside me. I’m trying so hard to give Shane a real chance, but the truth is ugly and simple: I’m only invested i

Elena CarsonIt’s been three days since Professor Davenport asked me to drop his class and I told him no.Three days of successfully avoiding him. Or maybe he’s been avoiding me. Either way, I haven’t seen him since that awkward confrontation in his office. But I hear his name everywhere I turn o

Elena Carson I don’t wait for him to say anything else before I walk out of his office. The door clicks shut behind me, and I keep walking, fast and angry. My heart is hammering so hard I can feel it in my throat. My cheeks are burning too and my hands won’t stop shaking. I just need to get the

Killian Davenport Of all the women in New York, why did it have to be Elena Carson who walked into my classroom?I lean against my desk, arms crossed, watching her stand awkwardly in the middle of the empty lecture hall. Messy bun, slightly wrinkled blouse, flushed cheeks. She looks like

Elena Carson KNOCK-KNOCK-KNOCK. I jolt awake, heart pounding. Ow. My head is killing me. I rub my temples and slowly register that I’m on the floor of my room. Not my bed. My hair is stuck to my cheek and there’s a dull ache behind my eyes that makes even breathing feel like effort. Everyth
