Chapter 2

Author: Sweetie Moore
Irene sat down on the floor at once just so that Cody could use her lap as a pillow while lying on the ground to keep his breathing even.

However, my eyes were filled with contempt and sarcasm.

Whenever Cody got "sick" like this, she would immediately disregard everything and get frantic with worry, fussing over him like a mother hen. Meanwhile, if I suffered from gastritis and was covered from head to toe in cold sweat, she'd just look at me in disgust and blame me for being slow with my work.

The ambulance arrived quickly that night.

Cody lay quietly in the hospital bed while Irene gently tucked him in as if he were more fragile than glass.

Moments later, she suddenly reached out and flung the transfer agreement in my face, growling as she chided, "It's all your fault! What did you have to bring out the transfer agreement out of the blue for?

"Cody would never have gotten such a shock if you hadn't suddenly acted so strangely and pulled this stunt on him!"

I ducked slightly, turning my head to the side, letting the agreement barely graze my ear before hitting the ground behind me.

I knew that she was just taking out her anger on me because Cody was ill.

In the past, I would have been extremely jealous of her excessive concern for him and gotten into an argument with her.

But now, I felt listless and exhausted. I simply hummed in response.

Irene looked at me in surprise.

After a pregnant pause, she rubbed her fingers together and softened her tone, picking up the agreement and handing it back to me.

"Cody is just a young man, and he's way too easily embarrassed. I can't possibly refuse to eat the cake from him, can I? He's suffering from a heart condition after all. He wouldn't be able to accept the rejection.

"But don't you ever use your shares for terrible jokes like this anymore. I'll reluctantly forgive you this one time."

I knew that this was Irene's way of "giving me a way out". However, I was done compromising all the time.

I said calmly, "Anything else? If not, then I'm leaving now."

Irene stared at me for a long time. Then, she finally sighed and said, "That's enough. Why do you have such a dark look on your face? You're making it seem as if I'd just wronged you terribly or something.

"Don't you know that I'm just doing this for your sake? You're so immature and unreliable. You'd never be respected even if I were to promote you.

"Here. Take this extra money and go buy yourself some cigarettes."

Then, she took her phone and began tapping on it.

Seconds later, I received a Venmo notification that she'd just transferred 2,020 dollars to my account.

During the years we'd been married, she always said that she was afraid I'd spend all my money on useless things, and so, she didn't just take all my salary from me—she also only gave me 2,000 dollars a month for my expenditures, and she always had to review every expenditure I made.

I was responsible for handling all three meals a day and paying for all the household utilities, and yet, every time I asked her for more money if the cost went a little over, she would glare at me with an icy, scrutinizing gaze that made me feel like I was sitting on pins and needles all day.

And now, she was even being reluctant about giving me the extra 20 dollars for "cigarettes".

However, all it took was for Cody to whine to her, and she would readily pull out her credit card for him to use however he liked.

It wasn't that I'd never gotten into an argument with her over this before.

But every time, she would glare coldly at me and say that Cody was her assistant at work and, therefore, responsible for her social engagements and living expenses. So, it would only be right for him to take more money from her than I did.

Then, she would blame me for all of my unreasonable spending afterward.

I had no other choice but to take up side hustles to supplement my income. I worked non-stop every day without a second of rest, and I could feel my body beginning to give out.

Yet, Irene would still nag me nonstop, telling me to spend less money because it was hard for her to keep the company going as it was.

I stared at the 2,020 dollars displayed on my screen and found it hilarious and laughable. Then, I unlinked our accounts with a cold expression on my face.

I didn't need her money. I didn't even care about her money anymore.

I simply looked up at her and said, "Okay."

After turning and walking out of the ward, I placed a call to one of my old friends, Zachary Cook, and said, "Zach? I've thought it through. Help me schedule my onboarding at the company next Monday."

Zachary was delighted and immediately agreed. He then told me how excellent the conditions were at his company in Merunica and how much they would welcome talent like me.

Irene trembled violently. She grabbed her head and swayed unsteadily on her feet before slumping back into her seat.I scoffed and said, "Wow. I can't believe that you actually entrusted the company to that good-for-nothing Cody after all."She didn't respond.Clearly, she'd already lost the ability to think, completely stupefied by the sudden change of events. After a long while, she shakily picked up her phone and frantically tried to call Cody. She muttered under her breath, "This can't be. This can't be. Cody wouldn't do this to me."Of course, all of her calls went unanswered. Her face was ashen. She looked a lot paler than the patients in the ICU.I glanced at my watch and realized that it was already noon. So, I rose to my feet and straightened my clothes."You should get back as quickly as possible. You're not helping your company by staying here for even a second longer."As I turned to leave, Irene suddenly grabbed me by my sleeve."Sebastian, please… I'm begging y

I burned the tie as a tribute to my dead feelings for Irene.I also temporarily unblocked her number. She immediately messaged me triumphantly and said, "I've already found the tie for you. Now stop throwing a fuss and come back to me."I replied to her with a video of the tie burning up in flames. Then, I blocked her number again. The next day, I went to work as usual. However, I saw a familiar figure waving at me from the coffee shop at the building entrance.I rubbed my eyes and made sure that I wasn't hallucinating or seeing things.Irene? What was she doing here?I frowned. Just as I thought of hurrying into the building to avoid her, she suddenly appeared behind me and grabbed me by my arm."What? You've got the guts to burn our token of love but not the guts to face me?"Her voice was soft and hoarse for some reason, and I could feel a headache coming. I had no choice but to request an emergency leave from Erin that day before following Irene into the coffee shop.I we

I spoke into the phone in Merunese, thinking that it was a Merunican client here. There was a pregnant silence on the other end of the line.Just as I was about to check who the caller was, I suddenly heard Irene's usually aloof voice asking in a trembling voice, "D-Did you really go overseas after all, Sebastian?"Didn't you promise me that you'd always stay by my side forever?"Even without looking at her, I could imagine just how haggard and exhausted she must look. Her voice was weak and quiet. If this were me from the past, I would have immediately showered her with concern and care. But now, I just replied coldly, "Why are you calling me, Irene?"My voice was icy and chilling. She couldn't seem to hold her emotions back anymore as she raised her voice at me in a shrill pitch."Sebastian! Is this the way to speak to me, even if we're already divorced?"I found it hilarious and asked her instead, "How else should I be speaking to you, then? Am I supposed to ask a mere stra

"But Sebastian! This is such a huge company. How are you going to divide it if you're getting divorced? Can't you allocate me to Rene?"With how Cody put it, it was as if he were the child of two divorced parents who didn't know whom he should go with. However, that gave Irene an excuse. She threw the pen aside and chuckled coldly."That's right. Why should you get half the company for nothing? The company belongs to me!"I replied calmly, "Read the agreement properly, Irene Owens. It states that I will be leaving with nothing. Don't you worry. I won't take even a single penny of your money from you."For some reason, the look on Irene's face darkened even more after hearing that. She even began trembling all over. She should be happy. She didn't just get to keep all her money for herself, but she also regained her freedom and was free to love whoever else she wanted to now.If I were in her shoes, I would immediately thank this ultra-generous ex-husband of mine.Ultimately, sh

Cody stumbled a little after I shoved him off.If this had been in the past, Irene would have immediately run up to him to steady him on his feet before whispering words of comfort to him.But now, she was only focused on me.Cody bit his lower lip and leaned backward, slamming his waist hard against the corner of the table. He then let out a painful exclamation and tumbled to the ground on his butt.Irene only snapped out of it after that. Then, she slapped me hard on the cheek. The slap was hard, ruthless, and merciless, and it left a red, stinging mark on my face that turned numb and began swelling.I licked the insides of my mouth. My teeth had grazed the sides of my cheeks, and the sweet, metallic taste of blood filled my senses at once.Meanwhile, Irene immediately went over to take care of Cody right after the slap. She softened her tone and asked him if he was alright.Cody was very satisfied. He leaned into Irene's arms and pretended to be hurt."I'm fine, Rene. It's

Irene froze at once. She stared at the ticket on my phone, her lips trembling as her eyes lost their focus. However, Cody scoffed behind her and said, "Where are you going on vacation, Sebastian? I know that you're a local here in Chauvania. This is just a plane ticket you bought earlier to go traveling during the Christmas season, isn't it?"His words seemed to bring Irene back to her senses. She seemingly thought about something and stared at my phone before suddenly reaching out to grab it.I held it high above her reach and asked, "Excuse me, Ms. Owens, but why are you trying to snatch my belongings away?"Irene bit her lips, her eyes still a little unfocused as she said firmly, "With how evasive you are about your plane ticket, you're just scared that I'll find out it's a fake one you Photoshopped, aren't you?"Stop acting, Sebastian Hart! You're just an orphan! You have no home to go back to! And there's no need for you to go so far and come up with such an elaborate lie ju
