Chapter 5 The Illegitimate Son of the CEO

Author: Sathara
Christine's P.O.V.

"Sometimes, when someone abandons us, the longer they're gone, the more our mind plays tricks on us," Robert said, his voice heavy with nostalgia. "We start to forget all the bad things and miss them for the little kindness they once showed."

I knew exactly who he was talking about—that vile woman, Yvette.

"Elliot thinks she was the best thing that ever happened to him because he doesn't remember all the damage she caused," Robert continued. "The more I tried to keep him away from that woman, the more he clung to her. Sometimes, I wonder if I made a mistake."

"Please, don't think about that," I murmured, holding his warm hand between mine.

"I can't help it. Because in the process, I ruined your life too." His eyes glistened with unshed tears, his pain raw.

I forced a gentle smile and shook my head.

"You gave me a good husband, a brilliant man who gave me three beautiful children. How can you say that? Everything is—"

"Don't divorce him."

My lies hadn't been enough. How could I fool a man with so much wisdom? He knew exactly who his son was, and he had seen how Elliot's coldness and disdain had drained me of my youth, my faith, my very soul.

"Don't let her win," Robert pleaded. "Don't let that woman ruin Elliot—and in doing so, ruin our family. If you step aside, she'll come back without hesitation, and I have no doubt she'll drive the company into the ground with her greed and tantrums.

"Money never lasts long in the wrong hands."

Oh, Mr. Manning, if only you knew how desperate I was to get away from your son.

Would his words be enough to make me reconsider the divorce yet again?

"Please, promise me you'll be patient with Elliot. I swear, with time, he'll prove to you that he's a good man. He just needs to rid himself of the poison in his heart. He only needs the love of a good woman."

Lies. I was a good woman, yet my love had never been enough. I hadn't been strong enough to turn his heart in my direction, but he had been powerful enough to turn mine to stone.

"Christine… don't give up on my son. I beg you."

His words softened something in me—not for Elliot, but for the man in front of me, the only one who had ever treated me like family, who had never turned his back on me.

With a bittersweet smile, I squeezed his hand, already condemning myself. I knew I would give in again. I would shove the divorce papers to the back of my closet and endure Elliot's coldness for a little longer. I was willingly locking the shackles back around my own neck.

How many more years could I give him before I lost my mind?

Just then, the nurse entered with a warm smile and turned on the television, lowering the volume.

"Mr. Manning, I'm so glad your daughter was able to arrive in time," she said kindly.

I opened my mouth to correct her, but before I could, Robert patted my cheek affectionately.

"Isn't she wonderful?" he said proudly. "Beautiful inside and out. A heart of gold."

Even my own father had never spoken of me with such love.

We exchanged smiles, and I leaned into his hand, grateful for the warmth he had always given me. How had this man fathered a cold-hearted demon like Elliot?

"Breaking news!" The news anchor's excited voice cut through the air despite the low volume. "Our reporters have just captured exclusive footage of the prestigious CEO of Manning Industries dining in a high-end restaurant with a woman who is not his wife!"

The smile vanished from my face. The anger I had managed to suppress in Robert's presence came roaring back, a fire ready to consume me whole.

The screen showed Elliot seated at a small balcony table in an expensive, upscale restaurant. Across from him sat a woman—her. Yvette. I recognized her immediately from the photo he still carried in his wallet.

My eyes locked onto the screen as my grip tightened around Robert's hand. I didn't even blink. I was waiting—waiting to see them kiss, leave together, or even check into a hotel.

Deep down, I realized what I was truly waiting for—I was waiting for Elliot to end things for me. Because some small, pathetic part of me still had a flicker of hope. Still doubted the divorce. Still clung to the belief that maybe, just maybe, everyone was right, and he would change. That somewhere inside me, there was still a sliver of patience, admiration, and love.

Then, the reporter's hidden camera zoomed in, catching every word and delivering the final blow straight to my heart.

"Nurse, please turn that off…" Robert said weakly.

But I raised a hand, stopping him. I stepped forward, my eyes glued to the screen, memorizing every detail. I wanted to remember this moment. I wanted to remember the color of her dress. The way he sat. The way his tie was slightly loosened.

"I have something to confess," Yvette said, her voice laced with emotion. She leaned in closer across the table. "When I had to leave you... when I was forced to go so you could marry that woman... I—"

She hesitated, taking a deep breath before smiling tearfully. "I found out I was pregnant."

"Pregnant?" Elliot echoed, shock flashing across his face.

I exhaled slowly, forcing the air from my lungs, forcing myself to breathe.

Come on, Elliot Manning. Ruin my life just a little more. I dare you.

"His name is Martin… Martin Manning," Yvette said, tears shining in her eyes. "He just turned five last week."

The world tilted. My breath caught in my throat. I stumbled back as if the words had physically struck me.

Elliot Manning had a son.

An illegitimate son.

Lucas's P.O.V.I had to admit, watching Elliot holding Christine completely off the ground with just his hands was impressive. Her arms and legs were curled up, and somehow, he still managed to carry her effortlessly. How the hell was he that strong?Didn’t people say the truly crazy ones had unnatural strength? What if he was the real psycho, and Derek was just a poor victim?…Nah. No way. The only thing insane about Elliot was his piss-poor attitude. He kissed Christine’s cheek before gently lowering her to the ground, and as I got swarmed by the four pint-sized monsters, I realized I was jealous.Jealous of the way Christine looked at Elliot—with love and admiration.Jealous that Elliot knew exactly who he wanted and never wavered. Despite everything, he stayed true to her, never settling for someone else.Jealous of what they had."I think he’s dead," Gerard announced when he noticed I wasn’t moving anymore."Only my soul," I mumbled, my eyes fixed on the ceiling with quie

Lucas's P.O.V."I don’t know everything, but the people who’ve worked with Derek since he was admitted say he’s here because of a ‘legal loophole’," Carly said, lightly scratching the cafe table with her fingernail. We had decided to leave the psychiatric hospital, and I took her to a nearby cafe. Her friends came too, but she chose to sit with me and talk about Elliot’s long-lost supposedly evil twin."A legal loophole?" I echoed, frowning just as the waitress arrived with Carly’s food and my coffee. I paused, not exactly thrilled that even the server might overhear this insane story."Yeah. I don’t have access to the files in that wing, but I’ve heard that Derek used to be really violent. Apparently, something involving a girl went terribly wrong, and he ended up… ‘taking someone’s life’. He was about to turn eighteen, which meant prison for life or even the death penalty. So, his lawyer argued insanity. Convinced the jury and the judge that Derek was mentally unwell and needed p

Lucas's P.O.V."Where the hell are you?" Elliot snapped through the phone. His tone was sharp and furious, just like always. I had to admire how he kept his emotions buried beneath that cold, composed surface. The only feelings he ever showed me were irritation and contempt."Worried about me?" I tried to sound playful like usual, but honestly? I felt like crap. I had spent the whole day trying to shake off all the self-destructive thoughts swirling in my head. My heart and mind were split in two, and I was starting to feel like I couldn’t breathe."Christine’s the one who is actually worried," he hissed. I was relieved we were miles apart, because if we’d been face-to-face, he probably would’ve punched me by now. "You disappeared.""I had things to take care of…" I muttered, staring up at the psychiatric facility in front of me. Anxiety twisted in my stomach, and my heart pounded. It was almost lunchtime, and I knew Carly would be coming out with her colleagues any minute."Like

Lucas's P.O.V.My head throbbed. The conversation with Carly kept spinning in circles, and I still had no idea how to face Bernice. I closed the door to my apartment and leaned against it, trying to breathe without hyperventilating. It was so quiet I thought Bernice had already left. I made my way to the bedroom, intending to apologize for everything that happened last night. At the very least, I wanted to offer to take her home and, of course, stop at a pharmacy along the way for a morning-after pill because... yeah. Even though I always carried a condom in my wallet—well… I hadn’t used it. How could someone with as much experience as I forget something that important? I wanted to blame the alcohol, but deep down, I knew there was more to it.I had wanted to feel all of her—her breath, her scent, her warmth. I didn’t want anything between us, no barriers, no distance. I wanted to drown in her. Even just thinking about it again made my heart race and my hands tremble, aching to touc

Lucas's P.O.V.Before I could say a word, Carly walked in, taking advantage of the fact that I was completely frozen in place."What are you doing here? How did you even find me?" I asked, clearly on edge. I didn’t even have a glass of water to offer her. Before I realized it, she had already taken a seat at the small dining table."Well, it wasn’t hard to track down Lucas Manning. Your name carries weight, and it always will," she said with a shy smile, folding her hands in her lap. There was something in her eyes I couldn’t quite read. I sat across from her and waited. "I don’t know if... Christine told you...""That you’re married?" The words came out sharp and bitter, even though I knew it wasn’t really her fault. "Yeah. I know."She quickly hid her hand, the one with the wedding ring. Her gaze drifted over the table as she sighed with a touch of sadness."I’m sorry. You’re a good guy, and I felt like I owed you this conversation..." She tried to smile, but it only twisted in

Lucas's P.O.V.At first, her lips felt stiff and unsure, as though she had never kissed a guy before. But then she began to follow my lead, letting the kiss deepen and grow more intense—just the way I liked it. The moment my tongue slipped into her warm mouth, something inside me ignited. Her small hands rested against my chest while mine roamed freely across her body. Before I knew it, I was on top of her, trying not to crush her beneath me as I slid my hands under her skirt and caressed the lace of her panties. Her breathy moans were like music in my ears, and the beast inside me—the one starved for sex—fully awakened. How long had I denied myself the pleasure of a woman, holding onto the foolish hope that Carly would someday be mine? I had suppressed my hunger for so long, but now that there was no reason to resist, I didn’t care that Bernice was my first indulgence. And I could say it honestly—I wanted her. Right then and there, I craved her taste, the heat of her skin, and the
