ALINA

My thoughts were all over the place, and it was evident in the way I laid facing the ceiling, my eyes drawing patterns through every single line like I was trying to create art – or drive myself crazy, depending on which one happened first.

“You’re going to have to get some rest, princess,” Theon murmured, pressing his lips against my temple.

I let him pull me into his arms, my head resting on his chest as he drew soothing patterns down my back. I didn’t want him to have to worry about me at a time like this, but…

“Why didn’t you just drop the case?” I asked, my voice soft enough to carry only the curiosity that I felt. I would hate myself if he heard judgment in there somewhere.

His chest rose with the deep breath he took. “Grandpa meant a lot to me, you know? I couldn’t just let his murderer walk away simply because.”

“His death was an accident.”

“It could’ve easily been you,” he countered. “Hell, it was supposed to be you.” His arms tightened around me as he said the words.

THEON“Are you okay?” I asked, my eyes trained on her stiff back as she looked at the phone. Her arm had been raised to retrieve it, and now it hung in the air, her eyes just glued to the phone while it rang to a stop and then picked up again. She jerked at the sound of my voice, and turned to face me.“It’s…” The name of the caller seemed to be stuck in her throat. “It’s Zach.”The world came to an instant halt, and I felt rage start to shimmer in my bloodstreams. What the hell did that bastard want with my girl?I forced my voice to stay level as I asked. “Do you want to find out what he wants?” I sure as hell wanted to.Her eyes searched mine, as if she was looking for any clues that I was going to have a problem with her talking to him on the phone. I kept my face blank, like a canvass before it met an artist’s brush.“I don’t think that’s a good idea,” she finally answered, her voice merely a whisper. My body was moving before I could call it back into order, feet on the floor an

  • My Billionaire Rebound   WELL, LEAVE.

THEONThe shock on her face would have been fucking hilarious if my mind wasn’t still trying to piece itself together from the unhealthy fear that had racked it when I believed the guards would have been too slow to react.Just the thought of having her taken away from me in any way was enough to make all of my thoughts crash to a halt and be replaced by a feeling that wasn’t in any way safe.“What do you mean? What news?” She asked both questions in quick succession, and her best friend looked to me for help.My shoulders bounced in a shrug and her tear-stained face hardened before she turned back to Alina. “The major news outlets have been talking about the attempted assassination and kidnap at the funeral of Grandpa Murphy by the same people who had killed him.”Alina’s eyes moved in my direction instantly, her smart mind drawing the only conclusion that was plausible given the comments I made during the attack. I didn’t hurry with an explanation, I just watched her with a calmness

  • My Billionaire Rebound   WHAT NEWS?

ALINA“I’m sorry, what?” I heard myself asking, even though fear was already camping prettily in my chest. “What does any of this have to do with me?”The men stepped forward again, one after the other, their guns raised to eye level. My gaze moved between them and Bryon who was still on the ground, one palm pressed over his injured shoulder.“Let the girl go, or we’d wade through your bullet riddled body to get her.” One of them threatened, his huge brown eyes flitting between me and Theon in an unspoken warning. The one with tattoos peeking out from underneath his sleeves flashed his teeth in a smile that was every level of predator. Fear sank its nails deep into my ribcage, making every attempt at a drag of air feel painful.“Trust me, we’d leave here with the girl. You only have to decide how much bloodshed you want before that happens.”My mouth moved on its own accord, spewing nonsense that I would never have thought of saying in a million years. “I’d rather die than go anywhere

  • My Billionaire Rebound   AN ATTACK

ALINA“I think you should stay at home today, baby. You’ve had a rough few days and I think the emotional weight needs to be laid off for a while.”Theon was standing just outside the door to the bathroom as I walked out, towel drying my hair. I paused with my hands in my hair and looked at him.His face was drawn tight in that way that announced that he was holding back a lot and my heart broke with the need to reach out to him and wrap my arms around him. The blankness in his eyes was causing an ache in my chest, his lips pressed in a flat line as he studied me, and his arms folded over his chest, the tailored black of his suit stretching with the movement.I took a step in his direction, securing the towel around my head and wrapping my arms around his waist. “I can’t just let you go there by yourself. You need someone by your side.”He tensed just before he pulled my arms down and stepped away from me. “I’ll be fine.”My arms fell rigidly to my sides. “But I won’t be. Grandpa was

  • My Billionaire Rebound   SUBTLE THREATS?

THEONI stepped into the house feeling like shit. This was one of the homes I rarely ever used, and the switch from the one I loved, the one I had shared with Grandpa, to this was infuriating in more ways than one.My phone rang in my pocket, cutting through the silence of the empty space. I reached into my pocket and grabbed the device, clicking the accept button as soon as I saw the name on the screen.“Mr. Thompson. What a pleasure to hear from you again. How have your days of exile treated you?” my tone was mocking, but it was the least he deserved. I didn’t have to guess why it was that he was calling me, the timing already gave him away.“Theon,” he called back into the phone with a sigh. “We need to talk. It’s urgent.”I almost laughed at the tone of voice that he spoke in, but I didn’t want to let the stray thought of putting a bullet through him fester in my mind so I sighed.“Unfortunately, nothing of urgency would have first required your disappearance.”There was a long pa
