Chapter 4

Author: Sable Censer
"Mr. Lawrence, I’ll be there, but not as your employee."

The intern, Logan, walked in and took the files.

I followed him out, and he immediately assumed I was trying to steal credit. He stopped me.

"James, this project is extremely important. Mr. Lawrence said I’ll be leading the negotiations, and you’ll assist me. So please don’t overstep."

The moment I heard that, the weight on my shoulders disappeared.

I had been wondering how I was going to distance myself from this project.

It looked like I did not have to do anything at all.

A while later, I deliberately brought it up in the office.

"Helen, I heard this project is a huge deal. The entire management team is paying close attention to it. If it goes well, the intern could get a full‑time position, and senior employees could even get promoted."

My coworkers immediately agreed.

Logan, who sat across from me, did not say anything.

However, his eyes kept darting around.

By the time we were almost off work, he came straight to my desk. "James, you know I’m the person in charge of this project, right?"

I nodded.

He continued, "Then you don’t need to be involved anymore. I’ll tell Mr. Lawrence."

I almost laughed. He had taken the bait exactly as I expected, but I kept my expression furious.

"Logan, what do you mean? Are you messing with me? What happens if something goes wrong later and they blame me for it?"

As I continued pressing the issue, his composure began to crack. Frustrated and irritated, he snapped, "Then what do you expect me to do?"

I smiled.

"Provide me with a written statement confirming that, during my employment with the company, I had no involvement whatsoever in this project. Not the bidding process, the pricing, the proposals, or any related matters.

"Only then can I make sure nobody tries to shift the blame onto me later."

After arguing back and forth for a long time, he finally agreed.

Before leaving work, I had the statement in my hands.

With that, I would not have to worry about anyone coming after me in the future.

For the next few days, Logan worked with the team he assembled, trying to handle the project.

Meanwhile, I focused on preparing for my resignation.

Every day, I took screenshots from the work‑group chats, documenting that I had no involvement with the project.

Finally, my contract expired. I officially resigned.

When I left, many of my coworkers were reluctant to see me go. Some even offered to take me out for dinner.

However, Logan looked completely smug. He thought I had been fired.

Before I left, he walked over to my desk.

I did not need to look at him to know exactly what kind of expression he had.

"James, are you really resigning? Or did you actually get fired? If you ever need anything in the future, you may come to find me. Maybe I can help you out. I do have some connections, you know."

I ignored him and walked straight out of the building.

Things had not ended well between us, but I had to admit that this place had witnessed my growth. Now, it was time to start a new chapter.

The bidding was only three days away. I did not waste a single moment resting. Instead, I used every bit of time I had to prepare.

This was not just about proving them wrong.

It was about proving my own worth, earning the respect, and earning the compensation I deserved.

Soon enough, the day arrived.

I entered the building alongside Company Y’s team. Logan and his team followed closely behind us.

Just before the bidding began, a sudden pain twisted in my stomach. I had no choice but to make a quick trip to the bathroom.

I never crossed paths with them because of that. More importantly, Mr. Lawrence never saw me.

When I returned, the bidding was about to begin.

I dared not look too obviously, but I could still sense the panic written all over Logan’s face beside me.

There were three companies competing for the contract. The first presentation ended quickly. Then, it was Logan’s team’s turn.

That was when Mr. Lawrence and the company president finally arrived, late as always.

The moment Mr. Lawrence stepped through the door, his eyes landed on me. "James, get up there right now. Do you have any idea how it looks for you to be standing with our rival?!"

After the case was over, my friends around me cheered, celebrating the fact that I had finally escaped that nightmare. However, I could not bring myself to celebrate. It was not just because of what had happened with my family. There was still one question I could not let go of, Mr. Lawrence.I wanted to ask him about it, but he remained completely calm, as though there was nothing unusual about what he had done.My life slowly returned to normal just like that. Then, one day, when I was heading home, my parents and younger brother suddenly rushed out and demanded hundreds of thousands of dollars from me.Their threats grew more vicious by the second. Eventually, they even tried to kidnap me, pulling out a knife and rope.I called the police immediately. This time, I decided to press charges. There were multiple charges against them, neglecting their parental responsibilities, making false accusations, and unlawfully restricting my freedom. They continued crying, screaming,

"Why shouldn’t I look for a better company now that my contract has ended? I have every right to choose where I want to work next. Sorry, but I signed an employment contract, not a contract selling my soul."As for the third accusation," I paused for a moment, "I’d like everyone to take a look at this evidence. These documents prove that I did nothing wrong during work hours."The first was a written statement from Logan. It had his signature and fingerprint, making it an official, properly documented statement. The second was my entire work chat history from the moment the project began. It clearly showed that I had never been involved in, or even had access to, any information related to the deal.Mr. Lawrence immediately pointed at me. "You held such a high position in the company! You’re telling me you couldn’t have gotten your hands on those documents?"That only gave me more to say."Let’s be clear. I worked there for five years and brought in more than a hundred million d

I smiled. "Yes."…We were still talking when the police arrived at my new company after receiving a report. There was not any solid evidence against me, but somehow, that only convinced the internet that I must be guilty. The comments exploded.[They sent the police to arrest him, and you’re still saying it’s fake?][Exactly! The evidence is right there!][Do you have any idea how many people’s hard work went into that proposal? And he actually dared to leak it?][Throw the book at him!]I put my phone away and shut out the noise, quietly waiting for the truth to come out. However, what I did not expect was that my former company would arrive before the police even finished their investigation.Mr. Lawrence looked particularly smug. He clearly thought this was the moment he would finally bury me for good.He sized me up and down before speaking, "James, what goes around comes around. Never thought I would finally find something to bring you down, did you?"I told you not

The moment I finished reading the article, I laughed. I thought they were only trying to exploit their employees. I never imagined they would go so far as to destroy me.Public opinion could crush a person. However, I was not going to let a single article break me.I followed my usual routine, got ready, and headed to work. The truth would always be the truth. No matter how they investigated, I was innocent.Besides, Logan had already given me written proof. While I was on my way to work, my family group chat suddenly exploded.I never expected the news to reach them.Just as I expected, all those relatives who were usually silent suddenly found their voices. Their backs stopped hurting, their legs stopped aching, and somehow everyone had time to pick up their phones and type.A few of them were especially active.Aunt Hannah was the first to mock me.[James, our family has always been honest and clean for generations. If this is true, you should turn yourself in immediately

"If I report you, you could end up in prison. I’m giving you a chance here for old times’ sake."I let out a cold laugh and replied, "Mr. Lawrence, are you really sure my contract hasn’t expired?"However, he was still completely convinced he was right.…He kept repeating himself. "You abandoned your position and violated your contract. I can sue you right now. You’re getting way too confident."I pulled out my phone and started scrolling."You don’t believe me? Perfect. I happen to have screenshots right here. I guess I’ll show them to you."I held my contract up in front of him. His eyes widened instantly. He grabbed my phone and looked through it again and again. Only after checking it several times did he finally hand it back.By then, he was already panicking.Mr. Lawrence had been clever for years. This was the one time he had made a mistake.I continued calmly, "I originally planned to renew my contract. I still had feelings for this company, and I wanted to stay."

I put on an innocent expression and remained silent. However, Logan started panicking. He even looked a little angry."Uncle William, I prepared this entire project myself. James has nothing to do with it. You can’t let him take credit for my work. You promised you’d give me this opportunity. I still need this to become a full‑time employee. You promised my father."His face twisted with frustration.Mr. Lawrence immediately walked over to him. For the first time, I saw panic flash across his face. I even noticed his trembling hands."What do you mean? You were the one in charge of this bid? Don’t you know your own capabilities? How dare you take on something this important?"With that, he grabbed me and pulled me over, and his voice turned harsh."James, are you blind? Can’t you tell which side is your company? If you’re so desperate to stand with that other company, then go work for them."Now isn’t the time to talk about you. We’ll settle everything once we’re back at the of
