Chapter 1

Author: Deer Tea
“Let’s congratulate the first prize winner, Chloe Taylor!”

When I heard my boss, Vincent Peterson’s, familiar husky voice, I noticed that I had returned to the past.

Hearing that I won the first prize, my colleagues cheered for me, and my best friend, Cathy Carter, hugged me. “Chloe, you’re really lucky! I’m so jealous of you!”

But I did not feel any joy at all. The horrors of what I had experienced were still burning vividly in my mind.

In the past, I excitedly went on stage to receive the prize. I wanted to use that money to get my mother a new phone.

But Vincent suddenly announced that he had doubled the prize because my performance last year was outstanding. In the end, I received $6,000.

But before I could feel happy, Cathy egged me on to treat them, and Vincent threatened to fire me if I ruined the mood.

In the end, I had to pay for the Christmas meal that Vincent had preordered, and I paid an additional $50,000.

After I paid the bill, Cathy and Vincent abandoned my drunken self at the roadside, and they sweetly left arm in arm.

In the end, I froze to death at the roadside.

I felt a shiver down my spine. When I recalled Cathy’s wicked face, I instinctively pushed her away.

Cathy did not mind it, but she urged me to go on the stage and receive the prize.

Vincent kept calling my name, and I was forced to go and receive the prize in the end.

I never imagined that winning a prize could fill me with unease, even fear.

I dragged myself toward the stage with heavy legs.

Vincent handed me the card with the prize amount written on it. Perhaps he had noticed my emotions because he said teasingly, “It’s my first time seeing someone unhappy for winning a prize. Chloe, smile!”

I felt like the card I held was a death warrant. How was it possible for me to smile? But I still forced out an awkward and ugly smile.

Vincent continued teasingly, “Chloe, you’re not disappointed with the prize money, are you?

“It’s my fault for not being good enough as a boss. I declare that the first prize will be double the amount!”

The crowd erupted in cheers. My colleagues watched with jealousy, but Cathy clapped and cheered happily for me.

I was stunned and unable to say anything. If this continued, what happened to me in the past would happen again.

I grabbed the microphone from Vincent. “I want to pass up the prize to someone else.”

The crowd instantly fell quiet. Vincent frowned. He wanted to say something, but someone shouted from below the stage.

“Chloe, you’re amazing!”

“Chloe, please give it to me. I’ll have the money to buy food for my son!”

“Chloe, can you give it to me? I need another $6,000 to buy the newest phone!”

I ignored all the voices and looked at Cathy, whose face had darkened slightly. “I want to give the prize to my best friend, Cathy.”

Cathy’s lips twitched. She did not feel happy about it. I could feel that this situation was more complicated than I had previously expected.

When Cathy tried to stand up to say something, Vincent grabbed the microphone from me.

“It’s a bit unfair if you just give it away to someone. Why don’t we just have another lucky draw?”

Before I could consider it further, my colleagues below the stage enthusiastically agreed.

That was fine with me. I did not think that I would be chosen again in another lucky draw.

The lottery machine on the screen began to spin again. [Three, two, one, stop—]

“Oh my god, Cathy, you’re finally home! Just now, some shady-looking people showed up at your house looking for you. I was getting worried about your safety!”Cathy rolled her eyes at me. “Chloe, stop the act! It’s all your fault!“Did you tell Suzie that I was having an affair with Vincent? Suzie divorced Vincent! You ruined their marriage! Are you happy now?“Also, you intentionally framed me in the lucky draw, didn’t you?”I blinked innocently. “Cathy, I’m your best friend! How can you say that about me?“Suzie decided to get a divorce, and you chose to borrow money from loan sharks! How’s that my fault?“About you winning that prize, that’s only because of me! I wrote your name on all the slips so that you might have a chance at winning! You should be thanking me!”“What did you just say?!” Cathy’s eyes widened in disbelief. She lunged at me. “Chloe Taylor, I’m going to kill you!”Suddenly, the door of Cathy’s house opened, and her father rushed out of the house. “You shame

By the time the sun rose, I packed my things and headed home.As soon as I reached home, I got a call from Cathy. She was not as arrogant as she was yesterday. “Chloe, can you lend me some money? I don’t have a penny to get home.”Cathy lived just one floor above me. “Didn’t you just get $300,000? Why do you still need to borrow from me?”Cathy sighed. “The company’s on holiday, so the Finance Department couldn’t transfer the money to me.“I called Suzie, but she didn’t answer my call.”I smiled. “Do you think Suzie would set you up? Don’t worry, she’s not that kind of person. Just wait for it a while.”But Cathy was worked up. “I need it urgently!“Chloe, can you lend me $150,000 for now? When Suzie gives me the money after the holiday, I’ll return it. I’ll give you an extra $50,000, okay?”I pretended to be troubled. “Cathy, it’s not like I don’t want to help you, but I transferred a lot of my money to my parents. I can’t ask for it back!“Are you in some kind of trouble?”

Vincent’s face tightened in awkwardness, but he tried to play it cool as he answered the call.He thought that he had taken the call and hung up calmly without exposing anything, but Suzie and I saw his every move.Vincent tapped on his phone, and it was obvious that he was transferring money. After that, Cathy returned with a confident look on her face. She calmly handed her card to the waiter. “I’ll pay with my card.”She looked at me. “Chloe, I thought I could lend you a few thousand dollars, but after what you pulled today, don’t expect anything from me ever again.”The waiter came back with the card in confusion.“Miss, there’s insufficient balance in this card. Did you give me the wrong card by mistake?”“What?!”Cathy seemed to be in disbelief. She glanced at Vincent with hatred. “This is impossible!”Vincent looked like he was flustered.Suzie walked to him in concern. “Dear, you don’t look so great. Are you alright?”Vincent turned off his phone screen. “Oh, I just

After a few rounds of drinking, Cathy let her true feelings slip as the alcohol loosened her tongue.Cathy patted me on the face. “Chloe, you don’t think I really treat you as my best friend, right? You’re just a tool to me.“You act like you’re so capable and better than me. You look down on me, don’t you? Just wait till the second half of the year. We’ll see who stays in the company, and who gets the boot.”I smiled without saying a word. I just kept eating and drinking.By the time the clock hit 4:00 a.m., everyone was finally ready to leave in satisfaction.A waiter arrived with the bill, which was almost a meter long.“Excuse me, who’s taking care of the bill?”Before Suzie could respond, Cathy stood up.“I’ll pay!”The waiter’s face lit up in admiration. He thought Cathy was a very rich woman.Cathy enjoyed that feeling. “It’s just a small amount of money anyway…”When she saw the total amount on the bill, she was stunned.“$150,000…”The drunken haze immediately lef

Then, Suzie took over a box filled with slips of paper bearing everyone’s names.I reached in and pulled out a name. It was Cathy.“Congratulations to my best friend, Cathy!”Cathy, who was sitting at the corner, shot to her feet, but there was no smile on her face.“Suzie, can I pass up this chance to someone else?”Suzie left the decision to me. “I think that’s up to the person who drew the name.”Cathy looked at me pleadingly. “Chloe, please give this chance to someone else.”I asked teasingly, “Cathy, didn’t you want to share a bit of my luck before?“Now that luck is on your side, why aren’t you accepting it? Are you worried Suzie’s trying to set you up?”Cathy waved her hands to dismiss that thought, and she pretended to be magnanimous. “We’re best friends. Your win is my win. That’s why I think the opportunity should be given to someone else!”“Give it away?“It’s not fair to give it to someone else just like that. The only option is to redraw.”When Cathy saw that I

The next moment, Suzie Zimmerman, the lady boss, walked in with an air of authority.Vincent walked forward with a smile. “Dear, why are you here?”Suzie glanced at him coldly. “Why can’t I be here? This is my company’s Christmas party. Can’t I join?”Vincent had married into Suzie’s family. Although Vincent was the nominal head of the company, everyone knew Suzie was the one truly in charge.Vincent almost fell all over himself to please her. “Dear, you misunderstood! What I mean is, if you wanted to come, you should’ve just texted me so that I could pick you up.”Suzie said coldly, “I’m perfectly capable of coming on my own. Besides, I haven’t shown up in the company for a long while, and I’d hate to think what kind of behavior might have been encouraged in my absence.”She cast a meaningful gaze at Cathy.Cathy’s plan had almost succeeded, but her stomach dropped at that moment. When she noticed Suzie’s gaze, she quickly composed herself and forced out a pleasing smile to fl
