Chapter 3

Author: Grass Prince
I stared at the familiar profile pictures and the vicious messages piling up beneath them.

In three years with the company, I'd spent most of my time rehearsing. I rarely bothered with their little social circles.

To them, Asher was handsome, wealthy, and the company's leading male dancer.

Mallory was sweet, pretty, and camera-friendly.

Of course they belonged together.

And somehow I, the woman who had actually been Asher's girlfriend and partner the entire time, had become the desperate third wheel.

Right on cue, Asher appeared to play peacemaker.

[Everybody calm down. Elena's emotional today. Having to withdraw probably hit her hard.]

[Elena, you should still come tomorrow. It might help you clear your head. I'll figure something out for next year's competition.]

What a generous boyfriend.

He sounded like he was defending me while casually cementing the lie that I had chosen to withdraw.

I watched message after message praise him and tear me apart.

Then I felt tired.

Arguing with people this brainless was a waste of my life.

I opened the group settings and left.

Less than thirty seconds later, Asher messaged me privately.

[Why did you leave the chat? Who is this victim act supposed to impress?]

[You're coming tomorrow. Don't make my parents think I'm being inconsiderate.]

I didn't even have the energy to answer.

Block.

Delete.

Done.

The next morning, I was still asleep when Mom ripped the covers off me.

"Elena, why are you still in bed? Get up. We need to leave soon."

I sat up, blinking.

"Leave for what?"

Dad was wearing the suit he normally saved for board meetings. Mom had put on one of her favorite dresses.

"What do you mean, for what? Asher and Mallory's celebration dinner."

Dad adjusted his tie.

"Mr. Penrose called first thing this morning. Our families have known each other forever. He invited all three of us personally."

I froze.

Asher's parents had invited my parents directly?

It took me about five seconds to understand.

Asher knew I wouldn't show up just because he ordered me to.

So he'd gone around me and gotten his parents to pressure me through mine.

I frowned.

"Mom, Dad, I don't want to go."

If I showed up, the fact that I never danced the final would almost certainly come out.

Dad's face hardened.

"Mr. Penrose called personally to invite us. If you don't go, you'll embarrass him."

Mom came over too.

"I know you and Mallory don't get along, but this isn't the time to make it obvious. Everyone from your company will be there.

"If you don't go, what are people going to say? That you're jealous because she danced well? Hurry up and get ready."

I looked at both of them, already dressed and ready.

I had no excuse I could use without telling them the whole story.

Finally, I sighed.

If I stayed home, I really would look inconsiderate.

Asher's eyes turned red.He shot to his feet."Elena..."You... you were already accepted? You entered the competition just to be there with me?"I didn't look at him."I'm sorry... I didn't know..."He stumbled a step closer."I thought—with your technique, one more year wouldn't matter..."Watching him suddenly fall apart made me sick.I poured another drink and lifted it toward the dancers who had been mocking me minutes ago.Now they were staring at their plates like they wanted to disappear into the floor."To everyone here. I hope your careers go well. Take care of yourselves."Then I set down the glass and walked out, past Asher's red-rimmed eyes and Mallory's ashen face. After that dinner, I cut off contact with the company completely.I still had more than two weeks before I had to report to New York. The next morning, I got a text from an unfamiliar number.[Elena, I still have your competitor badge and your state ID. You'll need your ID when you report to the

"I'm very happy to be here tonight," Mr. Dempsey began."Our company's overall results at the competition were outstanding."Asher and Mallory both passed Metro Dance Theatre's audition cutoff. Well done. Congratulations to you both!"Asher and Mallory exchanged pleased smiles. Then Mr. Dempsey searched the room. His eyes found me in the corner. His expression immediately warmed with pride."And the dancer I most want to recognize tonight is Elena."The entire room froze.Asher's smile vanished.Mallory's eyes flickered with doubt.Gavin was the first to speak."Mr. Dempsey, what for? Elena didn't even dance the final."Mr. Dempsey frowned."Didn't dance the final?"His smile turned to confusion."What do you mean? Who told you she didn't dance the final?""She said so herself!" Heidi pointed at me."She never entered the holding area that day. And at Asher's banquet, she showed everybody a fake national placement letter."Mr. Dempsey, don't let her fool you."Mr. D

Someone reposted Mallory's relationship announcement in the new chat with a heart-eyes reaction.[Asher and Mallory are unstoppable. Metro Dance Theatre's power couple.][This is what actual talent looks like. Not like somebody who screws up, disappears, then fakes a national placement letter. Now the results are out and she can't even make a peep, huh?][She's probably crying under her blankets right now. Imagine having to train another whole year. Hahaha.]I swiped away without expression and left the group again.A message from Mr. Dempsey appeared immediately afterward.[Elena, where have you been these last two weeks?][Tomorrow night is the company's end-of-season dinner. I have something important to announce. You need to be there.]I stared at the message for a moment.Mr. Dempsey had been good to me.For three years, he had pushed back against upper management so I could develop my own solo repertoire. He had been instrumental in helping me qualify for the American

The moment we got home, Dad couldn't hold it in any longer. His voice was serious."Elena, tell me the truth. What happened today?"Why was that Penrose boy so sure you didn't dance the final?"Did you enter the holding area yesterday or not?"I knew I couldn't hide it anymore. If I stayed quiet, Mom and Dad would keep feeling guilty over ending a lifelong family friendship without knowing what Asher had actually done."I never entered."I said it calmly.Mom stared."Even with the direct placement, if you registered to compete, you should have finished properly. A competition isn't something you treat casually."I met her eyes."I didn't enter because Asher kept my competitor badge and my state ID."Keeping my voice steady, I told them everything that had happened outside the theater, from beginning to end. When I finished, Mom was shaking."He could have ruined your life. Our families have known each other for years. How could he do that to you?"Dad said nothing. He

On Mom's phone was the official digital acceptance letter from the American National Ballet. My information was printed clearly on it, along with the official electronic seal.Asher stared."American National Ballet... direct placement?"Mallory's mouth twitched before she forced out a smile."Mrs. Winslow, are you... are you sure that's the right file?"The Principal Artist track only takes a handful of dancers from the entire region, and there are multiple evaluation rounds."Elena... I know her fundamentals are strong, but how could she possibly get in without anyone hearing about it?""Why couldn't she?" Dad cut in coldly."For three years, when has Elena not ranked first in your company's evaluations?"Why is a national placement so unbelievable?"Asher's eyes shifted. Then he suddenly smiled like he'd solved the mystery."Mr. and Mrs. Winslow, I understand. Elena missed the final. You're her parents. Of course you're hurting."You want to spare her some embarrassmen

The Penrose and Keene families had gone all out. They rented the ballroom of a five-star hotel.Almost everyone from our dance company was there, spread across several large tables. My parents and I were seated at the head table with Asher's parents."Martin, Diane, Elena—come on, sit down!" Mr. Penrose said warmly. Our parents exchanged pleasantries and congratulated Asher and Mallory on their performances. Not long after, Asher and Mallory came over to our table with glasses of sparkling cider to make a toast.Asher was dressed formally. He glanced at me, a hint of mockery touching his mouth. Then he sighed theatrically."Mr. and Mrs. Winslow, I'm honestly glad Elena came."After she withdrew from the final yesterday, I thought she might be too embarrassed to show her face."Silence hit the table.Mom turned toward me."Elena. What does he mean, you withdrew?"Dancers at the surrounding tables were already leaning closer, delighted.I hadn't told my parents because I w
