Chapter 7

Author: Ann Chase
When Sophie woke up, she realized someone was holding her hand tightly.

It was Carter.

He seemed to have stayed by her side the entire night because her hand was numb from his clutch, and she could hardly move it.

Sophie's waist still hurt, and she grunted from the pain, which woke Carter up right away. "Are you awake, Sophie? Does it still hurt?"

She pulled her hand away from his. "You should go."

"I'm sorry. I had no idea you were really hurt." Carter frowned, looking apologetic. "If I knew you were hurt, I wouldn't have ignored you."

"Yes, you would’ve." Sophie exposed him without hesitation. "Because you only have eyes for Ruby."

"You're still mad about Ruby and me, aren't you?" Carter sighed. "I know I was wrong for lying to you, but I didn't do it on purpose. I only found out that silly Ruby had a crush on me after we took our SATS.

“You know I've always been soft-hearted. She told me she didn't want anything and would be happy enough if we just dated for the four years of our university life.

"She also promised that she wouldn't make any trouble with you. She would hide our relationship from you to prevent you from getting hurt. I only agreed to date her for four years when I saw how sadly she was crying.

"It's only for four years, but if you don't like the idea, I'll break up with her once she gets better. After that, you'll be the only person I'll be with."

Sophie looked at the boy in front of her and suddenly felt as if he were a stranger. In high school, Carter was a handsome, morally upright boy. How did he become such a disgusting person in four years?

"Do whatever you want."

"You're really fine with it?" Carter hugged her excitedly. "I knew you were the best, Sophie! I promise you I'll be there to attend your graduation. We'll head to North City after that. Didn't you always say that you wanted to continue your postgraduate studies at North Capital University?

"Let's apply together, and we'll always be together after that."

Carter was imagining the future, but Sophie was thinking about leaving him.

There were still five days left in the semester break, and Sophie had to be hospitalized for four days. Once she was discharged, she would leave without looking back.

"Ruby is awake, Carter. She wants to see you." Anya stood by the door, looking unhappily at Sophie.

Carter released Sophie from his arms. "Wait for me, Sophie. I'll be back later to see you. Just give me some time to handle everything."

He left after that.

Anya glanced at Sophie, looking like she wanted to say something, but she stayed silent in the end and followed behind Carter to leave.

Since then, Carter would come by to visit Sophie as promised. He took very good care of her, making sure she did not burn herself on the soup by blowing on it before feeding her, and making sure the water had cooled before bringing the glass to her lips.

When the wind was blowing strong, he would close the windows, and when it was slightly breezy, he would let the air in. Carter would draw the curtains closed the moment a little sun shone onto Sophie, but it would take only one call from Ruby for Carter to leave her behind right away.

On the day Sophie was discharged, Carter was called away by Ruby once more. "Ruby is craving watermelon. Wait for me. I'll come back with your favorite frappuccino. I've checked with the doctor, and he said it's okay for you to have it."

Carter left with a smile. Sophie watched him walk away and said quietly, "Goodbye, Carter."

It was really goodbye for them, as she never wanted to see him again. Sophie got discharged on her own and left the hospital. She boarded the train after that and returned to Streamston.

After she was done packing, she went to the airport with her lecturer, who felt sad about Sophie leaving. "You're a good student, Sophie. Work hard over there, and I'll be waiting here for you to return as the best cardiothoracic surgeon in the nation!"

"Thanks, Mr. Kingsley!"

Sophie entered immigration. Carter called her before she boarded the plane, but Sophie did not pick up. He called numerous times after that, but she declined every time. After several dozen calls, Carter texted her.

Carter: [Why did you leave the hospital on your own, Sophie? Where did you go? Are you back in Streamston? Be careful on your own. You have three months until graduation. I'll take you with me to North City after that.]

Sophie: [Let's break up, Carter. I wish you and Ruby happiness.]

After she was finished with the text, Sophie turned off her phone and boarded her flight without looking back.

Carter did not need to pick her up, because she no longer needed him.

"Yes, I want to kill you! Once you're dead, Carter will be mine!"Ruby got up from the ground and picked up the dagger again. She got closer to Sophie with hate in her eyes. "Why is it that you've always been luckier than me since we were young, Sophie? Why are you the pretty one, while I'm the ugly one?"Why do you have loving parents, but my parents died when I was young? Why does Carter love you, and not me? Why?!"Ruby got increasingly agitated, and she lunged forward to stab Sophie, but Carter grabbed her arm. "That's enough, Ruby! Don’t do something that you'll regret. It's not Sophie's fault. It's us who were wrong. We betrayed Sophie, and we let her down. Don't you dare hurt her!""Is that so?" Ruby looked at Carter and smiled. "Yeah, you're right. We were the ones who were wrong, and Sophie did nothing wrong. So, both of us should just die!"A sharp look flashed in Sophie's eye, and she suddenly raised the dagger to stab it right into Carter's chest. His blood splashed on

Meanwhile, back in Beckland, Sophie and Cole started getting close as the days went by. They went to class together, shared meals, and took walks after class. They would also go on trips during the holidays and visit the local attractions like the Great Clock Tower and the historical Limdon Bridge.During this time, Sophie cheered up tremendously, as if she had completely forgotten about Carter. This continued until one day, Cole and Sophie were feeding pigeons at the music square. A pigeon stood on Cole's head, and Sophie laughed while asking him not to move. She reached out to pet the pigeon. "Don't move. There's a pigeon on your head. It's so adorable!""Really? How adorable is it?" Cole stopped moving right away, and he let Sophie pet the pigeon for a long time. Sophie was still smiling happily when the pigeon flew off. Cole stared at her face, which was right in front of him, and smiled along with her. "Would you give me the pleasure of becoming my girlfriend, Sophie?"The

Sophie's heart started to beat wildly. She had no idea that Cole had feelings for her when they were two people who had hardly crossed each other's paths."I wouldn't have come here to continue my studies if you hadn't suddenly agreed to come to Beckland. When I heard that you rejected the offer, I rejected it as well, but when you suddenly agreed to the exchange program, I agreed right away too."There was a burning, determined look in his eyes when he looked at her. Sophie bit her lip and pushed him away. "I'm sorry. My mind is a mess right now.""I understand. I'm not forcing you to give me an answer right now. I just want you to stop thinking about Carter Jennings, and take a look around you. There are many other better men out there than your ex-boyfriend.""Are you talking about yourself?" Sophie laughed again. "I heard that you kept to yourself. I never thought that…""When I'm with the woman I like, I'm always passionate, never distant." He looked at Sophie with a strong p

"She did?" Sophie frowned, looking upset. "She's no longer my best friend, Mom. If she goes over again, you can ask her to leave.""Is this because of Carter? Carter cheated on you with Ruby, didn't he?"Sophie was surprised. "How did you know about this? Did Ruby tell you that?""Carter came by our house today too, and he accidentally pushed Ruby down the stairs. Ruby lost her baby because of what happened.""What?!" Sophie thought that she had heard wrong. "Ruby lost her baby? They had a baby together?""You didn't know? I must have been blind, Sophie! I used to think that Carter was a good boy. I never expected him to be a cheating scoundrel! He even wanted you to forgive him. Don't give in to him no matter what he does!”"Don't worry, Mom, I won't. I won't go back on any decision I've made.""All right, I won't bother you any further."Sophie had no idea what to feel after hanging up. She was reminded of how Carter had waited outside her door a few days ago, begging her to

"I told you not to say anything!"While they were arguing, Ruby lost her footing and rolled down the stairs. Ruby ended up in a pool of blood at the bottom of the stairs, leaving Carter and Richard looking at her in shock.Ashley heard the commotion and came running out. She was stunned by what she saw. "What's going on? What are you standing there for? Take her to the hospital!"All three of them brought Ruby to the hospital, and the doctor told them that she was in danger of suffering a miscarriage. Ruby was wheeled into surgery right away. Outside the surgery room, Sophie's parents looked darkly at Carter. It was Richard who spoke up first. "What exactly is going on? Was Ruby telling the truth? Are you in a relationship with Ruby right now, and is she… Is she really pregnant with your baby?""What?" Ashley could not believe something so far-fetched had happened, and she stared at Carter in disbelief. "Aren't you in a relationship with Sophie? How did you end up with Ruby? And

They went to the rooftop of the building, and that was when Ruby flung Carter's hand off her. She looked at the red mark around her wrist left behind by Carter's grip and became upset. "You hurt me, Carter!""Why are you here with Sophie's parents? What do you want?""What's wrong with me visiting them?" Ruby started to play innocent. "They're my godparents. As Sophie's best friend, I should be visiting them on her behalf now that she's out of the country. That's normal, isn't it?"Carter glared at her, and his face fell. "Are you crazy? Are you planning to tell her parents what happened between us?""So what if I am? Don't you want them to know?" Ruby started caressing her belly. "Our baby is two months old now, Carter. Don't you want to touch him?" Ruby reached out to pull Carter's hand and put it on her belly, but Carter flung her hand away in disgust. "That's enough, Ruby! Just tell me what you want.""I just want you to take responsibility for what you did with me and for o
