Chapter 2

Author: Woody Tara
Only after making sure Eric was comfortable did Denise finally turn to me. Her tone was firm, almost accusing.

"If you switch suits, Eric will have to get his hair restyled and his whole look redone. He's already ready. We can't make him go through all that again. Besides, we're running out of time. Just wear what you have for today. I'll buy you a nicer suit afterward."

So she knew we were running out of time.

I was the groom, yet I was standing there in a uniform that made me look like part of the cleaning crew.

I arrived at the dressing room early that morning, expecting Denise to bring my suit and the stylist so I could get ready before the ceremony.

As the hours passed, neither of them showed up.

I called her dozens of times and sent hundreds of messages. She didn't answer a single one.

Two hours later, a security guard finally told me Denise had arrived ages ago. She had taken the entire styling team straight to the groomsmen's lounge.

When I went to find her, Eric was already dressed in a perfectly tailored suit, his hair neatly styled. He looked more like the groom than I did.

I demanded to know what was going on, but Denise acted like it was no big deal.

"I mixed up the rooms, so I figured I'd get Eric ready first. Besides, I had my notifications turned off. If you needed me that badly, why didn't you call?"

I grabbed her phone and opened her call history, showing her all 36 missed calls. Only then did she give me an awkward smile.

"Sorry. I thought those were spam calls."

We had been together for eight years, and she still hadn't even saved my number.

Once again, she expected a casual excuse about mixing things up to make everything alright.

It didn't matter how much time or effort I put into making things work between us. Whenever she let me down, she expected me to brush it off.

If I refused, she would promise to make it up to me next time.

Next time, she would make sure I got ready first. Next time, she would buy me a better suit.

Next time, she would pay more attention and stop getting things mixed up.

I had heard those promises so many times that they meant nothing anymore.

Now, I finally understood.

Denise hadn't been mixing things up all these years. I was the fool who believed she actually wanted to marry me.

Well, I was done waiting for her to get it right.

Eric opened his mouth, apparently ready to smooth things over again, but Denise reached for the ring he was holding and slipped it onto his finger.

"Don't bother arguing with him. You needed something to finish off your look anyway. Since he doesn't want the ring, you might as well wear it."

The simple silver band slid onto Eric's finger without any trouble. It fit him perfectly.

I glanced down at my own hand, where the ring left a deep red mark around my finger.

Denise gave me that engagement ring two years ago, when she finally agreed to marry me. She got the size wrong, but I wore it anyway because I didn't want to make her feel bad. It was so tight that it dug into my skin.

For two years, I put up with the discomfort without saying a word. Even after all that time, the ring never stopped hurting.

I finally understood that wearing a ring for years wouldn't make it fit any better, and that no matter how hard I tried, I couldn't force a relationship to work when it was never right to begin with.

I left without another word and texted my boss.

[I've decided to take the project in Marovia.]

He replied almost immediately.

[Aren't you getting married today? The flight leaves in three hours. Should I push it back?]

I glanced through the open doorway and saw Denise standing close to Eric, fastening a luxury watch around his wrist.

It was a limited-edition timepiece with a black diamond-studded bezel, worth a small fortune.

I recognized it immediately. It was the exact watch I had wanted for years.

I had mentioned it to Denise countless times, hoping she would surprise me with it someday. She always brushed me off, saying it was ridiculously expensive and a complete waste of money.

Apparently, it wasn't too expensive for Eric.

I turned away and typed my reply.

[No need. I'm leaving today.]

Before Eric could say anything else, Denise snapped at him, "We haven't broken up!"Her sharp tone caught Eric off guard, but he quickly recovered."Then why is Cody's entire family gone? Face it, Denise. He's not coming back."Denise stared at him blankly for a moment before putting her hands to her head. "No. Cody's just upset. He's had a rough day, that's all. He wouldn't leave me..."Eric's jaw tightened. He was getting tired of hearing her make excuses for Cody."Denise, come on. The guy's gone. Look, if you still want to go through with the wedding, I'll marry you. You planned this whole thing because of my birthday wish anyway, didn't you?"Denise didn't respond.Taking her silence as an opportunity, Eric turned and headed straight for the stage. The large screen behind him lit up with a slideshow he put together, showing photos of him and Denise over the years.Dressed in his expensive suit with his hair perfectly styled, Eric looked every bit the groom. The guests who

Denise froze, unable to believe what she just heard. For a moment, she wondered if she was so exhausted that she was hearing things. There was no way Cody actually canceled their wedding. After eight years together, she knew how much he loved her and how badly he wanted to marry her.She had watched him spend close to a year designing his wedding suit, obsessing over every little detail. It wasn't that she didn't care about him. She just never saw the point in rushing into marriage.Cody was always willing to wait for her, so what difference did another year or two make? The possibility that he might actually leave her never crossed her mind.He waited eight years to marry her. There was no way he would give up on their relationship over one argument. But then she remembered what he said four hours earlier, when he told her the wedding was off. Denise caught up with me in a few quick strides. Before she could say anything, a noisy group of wedding guests came rushing through the hallway, cutting between us.I tried to move out of the way, but someone knocked into me. I lost my balance and hit the floor.People kept pushing past, and I barely managed to avoid getting stepped on. I threw up an arm to protect myself and shouted, "Denise!"She was only a few feet away."Cody! Hang on! I'm coming!"But just then, Eric called out from somewhere farther down the hall."Denise! Help! My suit's caught on something!"Through the crowd, I caught Denise's eye.She hesitated, looking between me and Eric. For a second, I thought she might actually come help me.Then she made her choice.I couldn't hear her over the noise, but I saw her mouth the same words she always told me."Wait for me."She turned and pushed her way toward Eric without another glance in my direction.I curled up on the floor and covered my head with my ar

With my travel plans settled, I headed straight for the exit.Behind me, I heard Eric's footsteps quicken as he hurried after me."Cody, hold up!"A moment later, Denise's heels clicked against the floor."Eric, slow down. You're gonna trip!"As we passed through the venue, guests and staff members greeted us with smiles and congratulations."There's the handsome groom!""Look at you two! What a beautiful couple!"At first, Eric seemed a little caught off guard by the compliments. Soon, he was laughing along and teasing Denise for making such a fuss over him.I noticed he wasn't in much of a hurry to catch up with me anymore. He even stopped a few times when people asked to take pictures.Denise seemed perfectly happy to play along. She slipped her arm through his and smiled for the cameras.I never knew she enjoyed taking pictures so much.Whenever I tried to post a picture of us on our anniversaries, she refused.
