Chapter 3

Autor: Ketchup Noodle
Now, they were even borrowing Grandpa's belongings.

I glared at Shiloh and said, "Give it back."

The smile on his face froze. He reasoned, "Morgan, we only have one last shot. I'll give it back as soon as we're done."

"Give it back. I'm not repeating myself," I ordered.

Shiloh was clearly starting to panic. He looked like he wanted to say something, but ultimately kept quiet. "Hey, I didn't know this meant so much to you. Lucas told me it was just an accessory you were going to wear at the wedding."

I turned to Wendy and asked, "He might not have known, but what about you?"

When Wendy saw things taking a turn, she immediately tried to placate me, but her words betrayed her patience.

"Honey, it's just a pocket watch. Besides, I already told Shiloh to be careful with it. Did you really have to embarrass him in front of so many people?"

I found this entire situation ridiculous. I walked up to Shiloh and warned him, "Give the watch back right now. Don't make me do something I'll regret."

Seeing that things were getting out of hand, Shiloh reluctantly took the pocket watch off.

I took it from him, my fingertips slowly tracing the glass. When Grandpa passed away, Wendy had stayed with me in my hometown for three days. She knew perfectly well how important this pocket watch was to me.

I looked at the shop manager and said, "Cancel every wedding-related booking. All of them."

Wendy finally couldn't hold back any longer. "Morgan Lockhart, haven't you had enough? You're a grown man. Do you really have to call off our wedding over these trivial things?"

"Wendy, you're truly selfish," I utter, tucking the pocket watch into my inner pocket. "Now, I've finally seen you for who you really are."

Seeing that I was truly angry, she immediately put on a wounded expression. "Honey, after Shiloh leaves, I'll apologize and explain everything to you, okay? You've really got the wrong idea."

However, I simply found her behavior absurd.

"I've taken what's mine. The rest is nothing but garbage. Whoever wants it can have it."

I had barely made it a few steps away from the wedding venue when my phone suddenly vibrated in my pocket. It was the photographer from earlier. He had sent me several screenshots. He was also in the "No One Stays Young Forever" group chat.

Lyra: "You've already got the marriage certificate. It'd just be a waste not to take some commemorative photos."

Miles quickly replied: "Shiloh will be leaving soon. Why don't we arrange a three-day trip while we're at it? It'd be a good way to put a proper end to the love you two shared at 18."

Lucas asked: "Don't you think we're going a little too far? Morgan would flip if he found out."

Lyra sent a laughing emoji and replied: "He is very patient. He'll get over it after a couple of days at most. Don't ruin everyone's fun because of him."

After a few minutes, Lucas replied: "Fine. I'll return everything as soon as we're done with the photos."

I turned off my phone and called a committee member for the National Home Design Competition at the number I had saved earlier.

"Mr. Lind, is the spot you mentioned for the pre-competition training camp still available?"

There was a brief pause on the other end before I got a reply. "Didn't you turn down the spot six months ago because you were getting married?"

Six months ago, that committee had contacted me, saying they needed to select a group of promising designers for a six-month intensive course.

At the time, I was busy preparing for the wedding, so I turned it down without a second thought. Back then, I thought there was nothing more important than Wendy. Once we were married, I would have plenty of time to pursue my career.

I answered, "I'm not getting married anymore. I can report for training right away."

The audience erupted in applause, and many of the veterans I had admired for years nodded to me in acknowledgment. As soon as I stepped off the stage, the head of the competition committee came over and handed me an employment contract with a gold-embossed cover. It was a long-term offer to serve as a permanent judge for the National Home Design Competition, complete with operational resources for my own studio. After reading the contract's key terms, I signed my name without hesitation. In the past, I wouldn't even have dared to dream of an opportunity like this.Back then, my mind was preoccupied with saving for a down payment on our marital home and working around Wendy's business hours. I had turned down three major industry networking opportunities just to accommodate her. Now, I no longer had to derail my plans for anyone.Once I had finished all the final tasks, I took a five-hour high-speed train and then a bus back to my hometown. The manor Grandpa had left me was spot

After I spoke, I didn't see how Wendy would react. I turned away and walked toward the parking lot. I didn't hear any footsteps behind me.I walked quite a distance before I suddenly turned back to look at Wendy. She was still standing there, holding the open velvet box. Snow settled on her shoulders and hair as she stood there lifelessly, completely motionless. She finally realized she had lost me for good.…I never saw Wendy again after that. Every now and then, I would hear bits and pieces about her from former colleagues or classmates.I treated it as irrelevant gossip and forgot about it immediately. Her divorce case dragged on for a full six months before she finally received the first-instance divorce judgment. However, Shiloh appealed the verdict. He also sent the entire chat history of the "No One Stays Young Forever" group to the Sutton family's group chat for relatives and friends. He claimed that Miles, Lyra, and everyone else had encouraged the marriage registrati

Snow drifted through the air, biting cold against my skin. I had just pulled up the hood of my jacket when someone called my name. The voice was very familiar. It belonged to none other than Wendy.I stopped in my tracks but didn't turn around. She jogged around to stand in front of me. She was wearing a very old brown coat, with a thin layer of snow dusting her hair and shoulders. Her cheeks were red from the cold. She had lost a noticeable amount of weight, her eyes looking sunken and hollow. "I've sent you so many messages, but they never went through."She clutched the strap of her bag, her fingertips purple from the cold. Her voice trembled as she said, "I saw the exhibition announcement on the committee's website, so I came here to wait for you. I've been waiting since 2:00 pm."I gave a curt hum, my voice devoid of emotion. Then I asked indifferently, "How can I help you?"She bit her lip and stayed silent for a long time before finally explaining haltingly. Shiloh had

I had just taken the agreement when my phone suddenly vibrated in my pocket. It was an unknown number. I answered without a second thought, thinking it was a delivery driver. There was a silence on the other end of the line. A few seconds later, I heard Wendy's hoarse, tearful voice. "Morgan!"I frowned as I asked, "What's wrong?"Wendy sobbed for a while before finally speaking. "Today is the day Shiloh and I are supposed to get divorced. But he didn't show up."His phone is off, and I can't reach him. I just received a message from him. He said he was the rightful son-in-law of the Suttons, and that since you didn't want me anymore, there's no reason for him to leave. "He promised he would only marry me for a month, just to make up for a past regret. Then, he would leave."Wendy's voice shook with panic as she explained herself. I leaned against the wall backstage, wanting to laugh at the absurdity of it all. "Who was it that said that a marriage certificate was just a piece

I sent the screenshots I had saved of Wendy and Shiloh's post about getting their marriage certificate to the group chat, then added, "It's true. There's no need to ask."Miles immediately called, but I simply hung up. Just a minute after I hung up, an unknown number called me. The moment the call was connected, I heard Wendy's hysterical sobs. "Morgan, are you insane? You posted the screenshots in the group chat! How am I supposed to face everyone now? Will you only stop when my reputation is ruined?"I leaned back in my chair, my tone perfectly calm. "You ruined your reputation when you and Shiloh registered your marriage, not when I posted these screenshots."Wendy was sobbing so hard she could barely breathe, but she soon softened her tone. "Where are you now? Send me the address of the intensive course venue. After I finish the trip with Shiloh, I'll come find you. We can sit down and talk things through."I closed my eyes. Even after things had come to this, she still wante

I had just arrived at the training camp for ten minutes when Mr. Lind walked over. He placed a thick stack of project documents on my desk."After discussing it, the committee has decided to appoint you as the lead designer for the most anticipated project in this year's competition. The renovation of the houses in the old town."I opened the documents and skimmed through them. It was the same project I had previously submitted a proposal for, and it was the kind of renovation I specialized in. And so, I nodded and accepted the assignment. I spent three hours in a project meeting that afternoon. By the time it ended, it was already completely dark outside. I remembered I needed to receive a verification code for work, so I put my old SIM card back into my phone. The number at the very top of the call log was Wendy's father, James Sutton. He had called more than 20 times in a row.The moment I opened the voice message he had sent, his furious voice rang out."Morgan, what the h
