Chapter 3

Author: Fishy Freedom
Vernon looked at her affectionately with unshed tears.

At this moment, my heart broke completely and shattered into a million pieces.

I laughed. “Is this your first day knowing me? We’ve known each other for ten years, and we’ve been in love for six years. Only now do you feel like you’re settling?”

As soon as the company was poised to go public, she was ready to ditch me.

However, she did not know that her company was secretly backed by the Houde family’s wealth, which I had mobilized.

Furthermore, I had spent a lot of effort in obtaining contracts for her.

I wanted to see how her company would function without me!

So, I unfurled my clenched fists and held back the tears that I could barely control as I looked at her. “Fine. Let’s cancel the wedding as you wish.”

Bridget laughed in exasperation. There was no remorse on her beautiful face.

“You said it yourself, so don’t overstay your welcome. Get out of my house now.”

Vernon pretended to look at me sympathetically. “Bridget, it’s snowing heavily outside. Where can he go if you kick him out?”

Bridget hugged the baby and looked at him as she spoke softly. “Sure, he’s an orphan. If someone hadn’t taken pity on him and sponsored him, there’s no telling where he would be begging by now. But that’s no reason for him to yell at me and mess with me.

“We weren’t right for each other in the first place. For so many years, I accommodated him as a poor man. If I hadn’t lowered my standards, he wouldn’t have even gotten a chance to get close to me.”

Yes. I had known Bridget for ten years. Before the Houde family found and brought me home, I had been an orphan who had been tossed around from family to family for adoption.

However, I never mentioned the matter of being adopted to her. I wanted to tell her everything after we got married.

I did not realize that she would not give me a chance.

For so many years, I was nothing in her eyes.

Vernon looked at me apologetically, but he did not give in and said, “Find a nicer hotel and rest well. No matter how much Bridget hates you, I still feel that I owe you.

“Bridget and I are going to get married in a month. Would you come and give us your good wishes? I would appreciate it, especially from you.”

He was blatantly humiliating me.

“Really? Congratulations to you, then. You’re finally official.”

“He can come if he wants to, Vernon. You don’t have to be so humble.”

Bridget felt sorry for him because he was humbling himself in front of me. Then, she glanced at me coldly. “Hubert, you’re too poor. I’m out of your league, so don’t waste your time on me.”

She seemed afraid that I might cling to her.

My heart had already died the moment she left the wedding.

Bridget appeared all high and mighty as she looked at me.

“You’ve been with me for six years, so I don’t want to make things too ugly between us. I’ll give you 10,000 dollars as a breakup fee for those six years.

“You’ll never marry a woman as good as me. Just pack up and get out. Don’t let me see you again for the rest of my life. Don’t ruin my happiness with Vernon.

“Those of us who are rich don’t like to get too caught up with people who reek of poverty. Don’t you dare tell anyone that I’m your ex-girlfriend. Don’t tarnish my reputation.”

I was kicked out as I dragged my luggage. The cold wind pierced my bones and sobered me beyond belief.

At that moment, a sleek, black luxury car suddenly stopped before me.

A beautiful, slender woman then got out and walked briskly toward me.

She was holding a black umbrella. When I looked at her, my eyes instantly teared up, and I shouted, “Lucia!”

This woman was the Houde family’s adopted daughter, my sister.

Her striking face tensed before she placed a black trench coat over my body. Then, she raised her hand and wiped away my tears.

While she appeared gloomy, her voice was gentle.

“Don’t be sad. It’s just a lousy woman. Just focus on going home and inheriting the company. I’ll make her kneel and beg for your forgiveness.”

Bridget was still trying to make one last desperate effort. But unfortunately, she did not have a chance at all.The moment she reached out, I shoved her hand away.In a matter of minutes, Lindt’s Group declared bankruptcy. The investors, who had put money in Lindt’s Group, swarmed Bridget once they learned that it had declared bankruptcy. “Bridget, I want my money back! You’ve got three days!”“Mine too!” “If you don’t pay up in three days, we won’t let you off easy! When it came to her and Vernon’s wedding, she cared so much. I smiled softly. “Bridget, if you kick me out now, you’re going to regret it.” Today, I was not here as her ex to steal her away. But Bridget laughed like it was the funniest thing she had ever heard. “I’ll regret it? The only thing I regret is wasting six years on you. Someone, get him out of here!”As soon as she said that, several tall men in black suits approached me.I did not move.Just as they were about to make a move…“I want to see who dares!”A sharp, low voice sounded from behind.I turned around and saw Lucia helping my grandfather toward me.Lucia was wearing a smoky-gray blouse. Her delicate, pretty face looked striking. A pair of black-framed glasses rested on her tall nose.Behind the lenses, her eyes were cold. Bridget’s attitude immediately dropped a notch. “Ms. Houde, Old Mr. Houde, you are both here! This way, please.”Bridget turned into a brown-noser instantly. She addressed them very re

Bridget was annoyed at me. “So, you still expect me to have a change of heart? Hubert, in your eyes, you’ve poured your heart out and given me six years of your life. “But what you gave me were shackles. It constantly suffocated me. Let me tell you, that wasn’t love, it was control! “Stop using the help you gave me to guilt-trip me! I got to the Houde family with my own ability!“And I’m going to get married soon. Why are you still clinging to the company?”Bridget was frustrated.I laughed instead of being angry. “I’m a shareholder of the company. Why do you think I’m staying in the company?“If you want to buy the shares I hold, then pay me two hundred million dollars. Once you make the payment, I’ll wrap it up.”“You!”Over the past six years, I had been managing the company. I know exactly how much was in its accounts.I asked for a lion’s share, but I did not want Bridget to have to get down on her knees and come back to me.I just wanted to make her feel uneasy and re

This made me want to laugh.Everyone talked about Bridget like she was a big shot. And she thought of herself as one too.It did not matter if they kicked me out. It did not matter how much they insulted me.I wanted to see what these bootlickers would do once they realized they had been licking up to the wrong person. When Bridget was with me, she was just an ordinary person.I was the one who gave her my heart and effort. I even went as far as begging my grandfather to use the Houde family’s connections to support her bit by bit in secret. These bootlickers saw Bridget growing, and they injected capital into her company.Back then, I thought that since we were all classmates, I could lend them a hand so that we could get rich together. There was absolutely no need for that anymore.I gripped my cell phone and already had a perfect plan in my mind.At this time, there was a knock on the door.It was my sister, Lucia Houde.“Hubert, can I come in?”Lucia was always so gent

She put her arm around me, and we got in the car.She had even been thoughtful enough to bring me hand warmers. “Keep warm. Don’t catch a cold.”Her thoughtfulness made me grateful to her.Soon, she brought me back to the Houde family’s home.Just as I entered the hall, my grandfather greeted me lovingly and excitedly. “Hubert, my dear grandson. You’re finally back...”The sound of him getting choked up tugged at my heartstrings. Before the Houde family found me, I was an orphan adopted by various families. I drifted from place to place without a permanent home. After the Houde family discovered me, I became their only heir. Lucia, their adopted daughter, lost her right to inherit. While I gave all my love to Bridget and cared for her like a nanny for six years, Lucia took care of my grandfather and the Houde family.I was very ashamed. “Grandpa, I’m sorry for returning so late.
