Chapter 2

Author: Rowdy Bear
Theodore hesitated for a beat, clearly torn.

Just then, Nicole burst out laughing, completely unapologetic. "Oh, Mer, that's rich. If you've got nothing to hide, why are you so desperate to get Theodore to defend you?"

Her heels clicked against the floor as she crossed the room before stopping in front of me.

"You're not seriously going to deny you were at the gynecologist's on the 15th of last month, are you?" she drawled, her voice dripping with sarcasm.

"Swear you weren't there, and I'll get down on my knees and apologize to you right here."

Suddenly, every eye in the room was on me.

The hesitation in Theodore's eyes vanished, replaced by fury and humiliation.

"Meredith, answer her!"

He pointed at me, his voice trembling as he demanded, "Were you at the OB-GYN clinic at First General Hospital on the 15th or not?"

I met his gaze and replied calmly, "I was there."

Once again, murmurs swept through the room.

My parents were beside themselves with worry. Tears welled up in Mom's eyes as she tried to rush to me, but several spiteful relatives held her back.

"Meredith was there to have an ovarian cyst removed! It had nothing to do with what you're all implying!" Mom cried out in despair.

Yet, that only made Nicole laugh harder. She doubled over, laughing so hard that she was nearly in tears.

"Yeah, Mrs. Patterson's absolutely right. Meredith had an ovarian cyst removed."

Then, she turned to the crowd, her smile innocent. "But Mrs. Patterson, why would some random man need to sign for an ovarian cyst removal? Unless… Oh, never mind. I think we all understand."

In the next instant, Alice came charging toward me.

She pointed at me and started laying into me. "You shameless liar! And you're still claiming it was an ovarian cyst? Did you really think we'd just let someone like you marry into this family?"

Theodore, too, snapped. He ripped the boutonniere from his lapel, hurled it at my face, and yelled, "Meredith, you always pretended you were so innocent. And behind my back, you were sleeping with some older man? I'm so disappointed in you!"

I stared at the boutonniere on the floor. Whatever hope I'd been clinging to finally died.

Fine. Let them believe Nicole's lies. They had no idea what was coming.

Theodore went on, "The proof is right there! You admitted you went to the gynecologist's. What more is there to say? I'd rather spend the rest of my life single than marry a woman like you!"

"Fine," I said simply.

I reached up and pulled off my veil. "If this is what your family is willing to believe, fine. The wedding's off."

Without missing a beat, Alice planted her hands on her hips and spat, "Call it off then! But I want the 500 thousand dollars we put toward this wedding back! And you'll pay for today's reception too!"

I didn't so much as blink. I pulled out my phone, opened my banking app, and transferred the entire 500 thousand dollars back to Theodore right there in front of everyone.

"You've got your money back. From here on out, we'll have nothing to do with one another."

I had just turned to step down from the stage when Nicole grabbed my arm.

"How can you just walk away, Mer?" she asked loudly. "If you leave now, it'll only make you look guilty. "

Then, Nicole turned sharply toward another bridesmaid. "Janet, you were interning at First General Hospital last month. You were there that day, weren't you? Tell them what you saw."

So, she was bringing in a witness now?

I couldn't wait to see her own scheme blow up in her face.

I took a step back in disgust and yanked my leg free. "Mrs. Grant, didn't you just insist that the Grants were a respectable family and would never let a trashy woman like me in?"I pointed at Nicole and Theodore, both of them sprawled helplessly on the floor. "Nicole and Theodore are clearly perfect for each other. So, keep your trash and deal with it yourselves. I want nothing to do with all of you."Having said that, I turned and walked away without a second thought. I couldn't stand another moment in this disgusting place."Meredith Patterson! I'll kill you!"Behind me, Nicole suddenly tore herself free from the guards restraining her and came at me screaming, both hands reaching for my throat. "It was you! You planned all of it! You ruined me at your wedding on purpose! I'll make you pay!"I didn't move an inch. The instant she reached me, I swung my arm back and slapped her with every ounce of strength I had. The slap was for the despair I'd felt when she'd driven me t

With the ballroom in chaos and everyone's attention on the brawl, Nicole seized the chance to make her escape. She dropped to all fours and scrambled desperately toward the back exit. "Get that bitch back here!" Ms. Thorne barked, her gaze icy. Two bodyguards dressed in black immediately strode over and grabbed Nicole by the hair. "Let go of me!" she screamed. They dragged her back without mercy, then hurled her to the floor in front of the stage. "Trying to run, huh?"Ms. Thorne sneered before driving the heel of her stiletto into Nicole's face, grinding her cheek into the carpet. "My lawyers filed a police report against you this morning. You ran up half a million dollars on my husband's black card. Either you pay every penny back today, with interest, or I'll make sure you spend the rest of your life behind bars!"Hearing that, Nicole broke down. She screamed hysterically and clung to Ms. Thorne's leg. "I'm sorry, Ms. Thorne! I spent it all on handbags and jewelry. I'l

"Well, fortunately, I'd thought ahead," I said. "Yesterday, I had a friend at the hotel look into the records for this room key."I pulled a folded sheet of paper from my pocket, snapped it open, and flung it straight onto Theodore's face. "For the past six months, this key was swiped every Friday night without fail. And the name on the registration was Theodore Grant!"The entire ballroom went dead silent. One could have heard a pin drop. Then, another wave of shocked cries and gasps swept through the room, far louder than before."What the hell? So, the groom and the maid of honor had been hooking up all this time?"Another exclaimed, "And she didn't just betray the bride! She'd been sleeping with the groom's biggest investor too!""Oh, my God! What kind of mess is this? Even a scriptwriter would be too embarrassed to write something this ridiculous!"Ms. Thorne's expression darkened the instant she heard that. She whipped around and drove her high heel into Mr. Smith's sto

The moment I finished speaking, I hurled the box of abortion pills, with Nicole's name printed on it, into her face. The sharp edge of the box cut across her forehead, drawing a thin line of blood. I looked down at her and said, "Your name is right there. Even the date and time match exactly what you just said. So, this is a joke too?"At that, Nicole crumpled to the floor, completely limp. She couldn't get a single word out, and all that escaped her were raw, desperate sobs. Just moments ago, Alice had been screaming that she was going to tear me apart and beat me to death. But now, she had been reduced to stunned silence. She sank to the floor with her mouth hanging open, unable to make a sound. Her face had gone deathly pale, too. Meanwhile, Theodore's face flushed red. He looked like the world's greatest victim, as if he were the one who had been cheated on. "Nicole Reed, you bitch! You ruined my wedding!" he yelled. Theodore sprang to his feet and lunged at her, inte

Ms. Thorne's eyes flashed with disgust and contempt as Nicole tried to pin the blame on me. "I've got the wrong person?"Ms. Thorne scoffed and yanked a sealed envelope from her Hermes Birkin. Then, she hurled it at Nicole's pale face. "Do you think I'm blind?" she barked. "I hired a top private investigator to tail this fatso for an entire month! "You really thought you could just put on someone else's clothes, hide behind a mask and a hat, and get away with it, huh?"The envelope burst open, sending a thick stack of high-resolution photographs scattering across the floor. Guests in the front rows craned their necks to see, then startled gasps broke out among them. The first photo showed a woman in a khaki trench coat, hat, and mask. She walked into First General Hospital's OB-GYN department arm in arm with Mr. Smith. The second and third photos showed the same woman inside an empty private VIP restroom at the hospital, removing her mask and hat. The resolution was so

The doors were kicked open with such force that the crystal chandelier overhead swayed. The chorus of curses abruptly died away, and every eye in the room turned toward the entrance. Leading the group was a middle-aged woman in a striking red designer trench coat. She wore four-inch black stilettos and oversized sunglasses. The woman carried herself with an icy, commanding presence.Behind her, four burly bodyguards in black suits dragged a man behind them as though he were nothing more than a sack of trash. His face was streaked with blood, his suit torn to shreds. Moreover, his features were so swollen and battered that he was almost unrecognizable. With a dull thud, the bodyguards hurled the heavyset man onto the red carpet. The man writhed on the floor, whimpering weakly. Eventually, someone in the crowd realized who the battered man was. Then, a shrill scream tore through the crowd. "Mr. Smith? That's Patrick Smith from Ignis Capital!""Oh my God!" another exclaimed.
