Chapter 3

Penulis: Zac Neal
I begged Lucian.

“It doesn’t matter if we break off the engagement! Just send someone immediately to save June and Poppy, and I’ll do anything you ask!”

When he heard that, Lucian froze. He knew how much I cared about him.

Back when he was bitten by a zombie, I risked my life to find him the antibody.

If I were thinking about abandoning him, it must mean things were really that bad.

After hesitating, Lucian finally agreed to send help.

I quickly recorded footage of our surroundings to send to him to prove that we were really in danger.

Just then, Lucian received a voice note from Castiel.

“Eira is pretending. Don’t believe a word she says.”

Soon enough, I heard Castiel’s voice on the other end of the line.

In that instant, it felt as if I had been plunged into ice water.

Did Castiel truly wish for us to die?

Lucian’s face darkened the moment he heard it.

“Effective immediately, Northern Base is forbidden from answering Eira’s calls. No one is to leave the base! Eira, I want to see if you and June really get torn apart by zombies!”

He hung up. The zombies outside seemed to be triggered by something. They attacked the air-raid shelter with even greater fury.

The chandelier above swayed precariously before crashing down.

I lunged forward to shield June and Poppy but was struck by it.

Shards of the broken chandelier sliced my back, and I bled freely.

Because of the strong scent of blood, the zombies outside grew even more frenzied.

Gritting my teeth against the pain, I crawled to my feet. Only after confirming that June and Poppy were unharmed did I breathe a sigh of relief.

I knew the three of us could not just sit here waiting to die. We had to find a way to escape.

“June, I’ll charge and draw the zombies away. You take Poppy and get out of here! Head for the Northern Base! No… go to the Southern Base and find my uncle and the others!”

Castiel refused to look out for us, and Lucian was unreliable. Only my uncle, currently at the Southern Base, might be able to save us.

But June refused to budge.

“No, Eira, I’ll distract the zombies. You take Poppy and run! I’m heavily pregnant. I won’t get far…”

Just then, a zombie smashed through the air-raid shelter door and let out a bloodcurdling growl.

More zombies poured in immediately after.

Seeing the dire situation, June stepped forward and used her body to carve a path for us.

In the split second before the zombies pounced, she uttered her final words, “Eira, run! Go find your uncle!”

Clutching Poppy, I gritted my teeth and ran.

Along the way, I saw the entire Central Base in utter ruin.

Bodies lay scattered everywhere.

I dared not look closely. I was afraid of spotting a familiar face and just kept running forward with my head down.

I finally found a car and drove for what felt like an eternity before finally reaching the outskirts of the Southern Base.

I frantically shouted for help.

“Help! Send reinforcements to the Central Base!”

The guard recognized me and rushed to alert my uncle.

But my uncle never appeared. Instead, an unexpected group arrived.

“Eira, you made it here after all!”

The speaker was Castiel’s right-hand man, Conrad Woods. Behind him stood the base’s young and strong men.

“What are you doing here?”

My face lit up. With them here, the base could be saved!

But Conrad showed no trace of joy. Instead, he only laughed coldly.

A wave of unease washed over me.

“The base was breached by zombies! Conrad, you’re coming with me to save them! June…”

Lucian looked up at us. His voice trembled with rage. “You dare scheme against me?!”I let out a cold laugh.“Weren’t you the one who targeted us first?“We’re giving you two options: leave the Northern Base to us, or feed your people to the zombies.”Lucian was so angry that the veins on his temples bulged. He refused at first, of course. But the zombies closing in on him changed his mind, and he reluctantly conceded. We distributed the base’s special serum to him and his force. It was harmless unless they turned on us.If they betrayed us, they would explode. In this post-apocalyptic world of deceit, it was essential to guard against treachery. With the Northern Base’s manpower and resources, our base’s reconstruction sped up significantly.Single women from the Northern Base began forming relationships with our base members. The previous hostility between the two sides eased considerably as they worked together to rebuild everything. To fortify the base walls, I holed up

We had yet to elect a new leader for the base, but we voted on what to do with the previous leader first. The result was a full landslide approval. While Castiel was still licking the leftovers in the bowl, a group of people rushed to the warehouse. They hit the pair with broken sticks and broke their legs.Their screams echoed in the air. Everyone heard them. But no one cared. They had lost their families because of Castiel’s indifference, after all.Who would feel pity for someone who had not cared for his own people? He was bound to be punished sooner or later.Their legs were broken, and they were unable to move. The people threw them out of the base.Castiel had created this rule in the first place. He must have never thought that the rule would apply to him too someday.Blood oozing out of their legs and Liana’s cry attracted the surrounding zombies.Castiel covered the wound to avoid losing too much blood. Then, he glared at Liana. “Shut up, you idiot!“We will all

A flicker of disbelief crossed Castiel’s eyes as his breath quickened. He had loved his wife. After she gave birth, he thought she had lost her charm. The harshness of the apocalypse left her looking gaunt and sallow.I thought Castiel would at least show remorse, but he brushed off June’s death so casually.“I’ll avenge June! I’ll slaughter every last zombie!“Right now, the most important thing is to get me out of here, Eira.”Castiel’s words made me laugh bitterly.“You killed June. Her death was your fault, not anyone else’s. What makes you think I would help you?!”Castiel roared in rage, “Eira, she was just an outsider! I’m your real brother!”‘An outsider?’ I thought. All these years, June had looked after me and cared for me.When the zombies attacked, she shielded me behind her.Meanwhile, my dear brother was out bathing with his mistress! What a laughable family we were! What a pathetic man Castiel was!Even in her final moments, June believed Castiel would com

“We respected you, admired you, and listened to your orders without any hesitation, but you took us for fools, Castiel Fenton!”Under everyone’s questioning gaze, Castiel had no way to defend himself. Facts were stronger than words and opinions. After this incident, Castiel’s image in everyone’s eyes had fallen drastically.Liana, who had been hiding behind Castiel, stepped forward.“You all think you can threaten us because you outnumber us? You’re just trying to intimidate us!“This matter has nothing to do with Castiel.“This isn’t the first time. Eira and June were always jealous of me. Maybe they let in the zombies on purpose!“Besides, even if there was a zombie siege, how could there be so many casualties? They must be lying!”One of the women could not listen to Liana any longer. She stepped forward and slapped her.June had saved that woman’s life.Without June, she would have become zombie food.If June really intended to harm others, would she have tried to help

When he saw the crowd advancing fiercely, Castiel sensed that something was wrong. He hurriedly shielded Liana behind him. Some people pointed their knives directly at Castiel.“Castiel Fenton, we chose you as the base’s leader to protect it!”“Why didn’t you come back when the zombies besieged the city?!”“You’d better give us an explanation for this!”The crowd shouted over each other. Their words were like a torrent threatening to drown Castiel and Liana.Castiel tried to speak, but the furious survivors drowned out his voice.Chaos erupted as the crowd closed in.Castiel momentarily froze and was unsure how to respond. He felt Liana trembling in fear behind him.Suddenly, Castiel drew a pistol from his side and fired three shots into the air.The base instantly fell quiet. The boy who had been brandishing a knife at Castiel backed away in fright. When he saw that it had worked, Castiel roared at the crowd.“Everyone, calm down!“Let me assess the situation first.“

  • My Brother Left Us For Dead   Chapter 4

Conrad did not move at all. He said expressionlessly, “Commander Fenton had us wait here specifically to block your way.”I thought I misheard him. “What?!”“Eira, I must say you act very well. You and June trying to deceive us is one thing, but dragging a young child into this is another.”Conrad took Poppy from me, placed her in the car, and addressed me coldly. “Commander Fenton saw through your and June’s scheme long ago.”Poppy kicked and struggled and tried to come back to me.“Please save my mom!”Thick smoke billowed in the distance. It faintly mingled with heart-wrenching screams.Conrad’s eyes flickered, but his anger only intensified.“You involved this young child in your lies!”With that, he locked me inside the car, too.“Conrad, I’m not lying! Your family’s desperately waiting for you!”I pounded desperately on the car door as my heart filled with despair.Conrad drove me to the Southern Base. But as soon as we reached the entrance, we saw crowds of people f
