Chapter 2

Author: Nora Blythe
I took Arlene to the hospital.

The doctor frowned deeply while treating her wound.

"How did it get this bad? Children's bones and flesh are extremely delicate—it'll be hard to avoid scarring."

The doctor used tweezers to pick the shards of glass out of Arlene's palm.

The shards were mixed with bloody bits of flesh. Unable to bear watching, I turned my head away as my eyes reddened.

Arlene had cried herself out. Her palm was numbed with anesthetic, and now she was only whimpering softly.

On the way to the hospital, she had kept saying, "As long as I behave, Mommy, Grandpa, and Grandma won't be angry anymore."

It wasn't until the wound was fully treated that Arlene's furrowed little face finally relaxed.

I led her out of the emergency room. Just around the corner, we ran into Glen, who had brought Clarence in for a checkup.

There was an awkward look on Glen's face as he timidly greeted me, "Hey, Adam."

When we were kids, he and I had been very close—so much so that even after he was sent abroad, I always kept an eye on how he was doing in life.

But even now, I still didn't want to face what had happened between him and Tabitha.

I ignored him. But as I turned to leave, Glen stood in my way with Clarence in tow.

When he noticed Arlene's bandaged hand, he said, "Adam, I'm sorry. Clarence didn't mean to hurt Arlene."

The mere sound of Glen's voice made me sick.

"Get lost!"

Glen clung tightly to my sleeve.

"Adam, I know you still can't bring yourself to accept it. I'll do whatever you want—I just want us to be a happy family again."

My stomach kept churning. Where the heck did he get the nerve to say, "I just want us to be a happy family again"?

Glen's ruckus was drawing a growing crowd of curious bystanders.

Tabitha pushed through the crowd. When she saw me, her patience ran out completely.

She stepped forward and asked through gritted teeth, "Adam, how long are you going to keep dragging this out? Everyone's watching—don't embarrass yourself."

I let out an exasperated laugh and drew Arlene behind him.

"You're the one who should be embarrassed. After all, I'm not the one who cheated and had an illegitimate child."

Even though I wasn't speaking very loudly, everyone could hear it nonetheless.

The bystanders pointed and whispered at Tabitha and Glen, clearly eating up the drama.

Both of their faces went pale.

Dad, who had rushed over upon hearing the commotion, slapped me across the face the moment he heard those words.

I stumbled back a few steps, and Arlene let out a scream.

Dad pointed at my face and cursed me out, "It seems raising you was all for nothing. Clarence is my precious grandson. I'd like to see who dares to bully him!"

Mom also looked furious and flustered. "I've been nothing but good to you, Adam. How could you bully a child? It's not as if we're going to disown Arlene just because Clarence is back."

I spat out a mouthful of blood, half my face bright red. In all my years of being alive, this was the first time I had ever been hit.

Growing up, Mom and Dad had always been very strict with Glen. I had always thought they didn't like him. Only now did I understand that Glen was the apple of their eye all along.

Resentment and rage spread from my chest through my entire body.

I raised my head and asked, "Did I say something wrong? If Clarence isn't an illegitimate child, then what is he? Mom, how dare you still speak to me like that when you helped them keep it from me all this time?"

Mom's eyes instantly flew wide open. She clutched her chest with one hand and, with the other, pointed a trembling finger at me. Her lips quivered, but she couldn't string together a single complete sentence.

Suddenly, she closed her eyes and blacked out.

In an instant, the scene descended into chaos.

Glen frantically called for a doctor, and they rushed Mom to the emergency room.

Tabitha looked at me with reddened eyes. "Adam, are you satisfied now? She's your mother, for crying out loud. What if she gets so upset that she falls ill? Can't you just let this family have some peace?"

Dad roared at me, "If anything happens to your mother, I'm disowning you!"

The next time I saw Tabitha, Mom, and Dad was a month later. I hadn't expected them to come looking for me.By then, I had already bought a house here and transferred Arlene to a new school. The moment Mom and Dad saw me, their eyes reddened."We know now that Clarence was pretending to be sick. You and Arlene have been put through so much all this time.""Adam, I'm sorry. I didn't know Clarence was faking his illness. Let's go home."Tabitha's voice was hoarse, as if she had been crying.I quietly put some distance between us. I didn't understand why she had suddenly shown up here. After all, she had long since known about my filing for divorce.Aside from that, what possible reason could she have for coming all this way to find me?"Tabitha, whatever your purpose is in coming here today, I won't withdraw the lawsuit."I was dead set on divorcing her, no matter what.Back then, it was because I was too softhearted that Arlene ended up being hurt. Now I didn't want to repeat

Mom and Dad hurried over soon enough. When Dad learned that Arlene and I were gone, he refused to believe it at first."Could Adam just be sulking?" he asked.Tabitha shook her head."Dad, he's blocked my calls and texts."Hearing this, Dad still didn't believe her.It was Mom who called me instead, only to discover that I had blocked her number too."Adam blocked me. You try calling him."Hearing Mom say this, Dad called me.Sure enough, his number had been blocked too."That's impossible. No way would that little piece of shit do this.""Don't tell me he's mad just because we missed Arlene's birthday last time," Mom said, a little irritated.Tabitha was in no mood to listen to all this."Clarence was faking his illness," she explained to Mom and Dad. "We were all in the wrong about what happened last time. We shouldn't have left Arlene and Adam behind."Logically, Mom and Dad wouldn't have believed it. But now, faced with me not responding to any messages, they felt jus

He won't go to sleep otherwise," Glen said urgently.Clarence's crying came through from the other end, but Tabitha had no time to dig into what was really going on.She tossed the divorce papers back onto the table and left in a hurry. Even though she hadn't read the contents clearly, she knew that this time I was serious. She recalled the disappointed look on Arlene's face when she had left on her birthday. If catching Tabitha cheating had only disappointed me, then this divorce meant cutting all ties for good. Never again would I give her another chance.Tabitha took a deep breath.Soon, she arrived at Glen's place. The door was ajar. She reached out to push it open, but then she heard voices coming from inside."Daddy, do I still have to pretend to be sick like last time? Won't Mommy find out?"Standing outs

After receiving Glen's call, Tabitha was beside herself with worry. She had given birth to Clarence after a difficult labor, which was what led to his poor health and congenital heart disease.Likewise, Mom and Dad's worry was plain to see. Clarence was their precious grandson, after all.Running several red lights the whole way, the three of them finally arrived at the hospital. They pushed the door open and saw Clarence lying weakly in the hospital bed."Mommy, you finally came. I thought you didn't want me anymore."Clarence's weak voice made Tabitha's heart ache. These past days, in order to avoid causing friction, she had gone a long time without seeing Clarence. But at the end of the day, both Clarence and Arlene were her own flesh and blood. I didn't go into Mom's hospital room. After getting Arlene settled, I asked the doctor for an update."Mrs. Wilder? She's fine. She just got so worked up that she passed out. Just make sure not to upset her again after this."The knot of anxiety in my chest slowly loosened. When all was said and done, she was still my mother at the end of the day.I glanced at the tightly shut hospital room door, feeling a wave of exhaustion.Mom was hospitalized for three days. During that time, Glen and Clarence deliberately avoided me and Arlene. That was, until Mom was discharged and returned home.Thinking of her poor health, I hesitated for a long while but ultimately brought Arlene back to my parents' house. The moment I stepped through the door, I heard Mom asking, "Tabitha, isn't it about time Clarence got his Social Security number?"I abruptly stopped in my tracks as I watched Tabitha nod."You're right, Mom.
