"Vivian, as a woman, you're going to get married one day. This cafe is part of our family's assets, so just step aside."

Ian carefully glanced up at me, waiting for my reaction.

I took a few deep breaths, trying to calm myself down.

My dad, Edmund Kingston, had originally said that the cafe business would be split—half for me and half for Ian.

But ever since Ian graduated, he had done nothing but slack off. He hadn't lifted a finger for the business and just took his share of the profits while I worked tirelessly to build it up. I had played every role just to keep things running and save costs, leaving me completely drained.

Then, out of nowhere, Ian, who had done next to nothing, decided he wanted to take my half because his girlfriend, Louisa Nott, wanted to turn it into a "couple's business". The audacity!

I was livid. The anger hit me like a tidal wave.

"For three years, I've busted my ass while you just sat back. Now that the business is making money, your girlfriend wants to kick me out? Have you even thought about how I feel?"

Ian frowned. "What do you mean? I've been thinking about you! Louisa has experience, and together, we can make even more money. She said that if you want, you can come help us at the cafe too, and we'll pay you well."

"Help? Why should I help her? I built this place from the ground up! I've worked so hard, and now she wants to turn me into an employee for her business? This is insane!"

My whole body was shaking with rage.

Ian sighed, clearly annoyed. "You're being ungrateful. Louisa is offering you a chance. If you work with us, who knows? We might even make more money."

"In your dreams."

Just then, we heard our mom, Caroline Myers, call out from outside, "What's going on with you two? Keep it down. It's late."

I forced myself to calm down and asked Ian, "Do Mom and Dad know about this?"

Ian avoided my gaze. "Not yet. You know how Dad and Mom feel about Louisa asking for a 600-thousand-dollar wedding gift. But Louisa's already backed down. She said 300 thousand would be fine, as long as she gets a stake in the cafe."

He added, "Look, Vivian, why don't you just tell Mom and Dad that you want to step away from the business and give half of the cafe to Louisa? C-consider it a wedding gift for Louisa and me."

His whole plan was aimed directly at me.

He didn't want to pay the full amount for the wedding gift, didn't want to upset his girlfriend, and didn't want to deal with our parents' disapproval. So he came up with this ridiculous idea and wanted me to take the fall.

Did he think I was a pushover?

I sneered. Without saying another word, I stormed into the living room, opened the study door, and shouted, "Mom, Dad, Ian wants to partner with his girlfriend Louisa and kick me out of the cafe!"

Mom and Dad were utterly disappointed in Ian and no longer wanted to involve themselves in his affairs. After Mom's health improved, Dad took her on trips around the country. Pictures of scenic views from all over appeared regularly in their respective social media feeds. Whenever their friends asked about Ian, they would respond with indifference."Children have their own lives now that they're grown up. It's more important for us to focus on living our lives well."Every so often, I would receive special souvenirs from their travels. Though I didn't ask about Ian, people would still update me on him.Ian's business had been poorly managed, and his cafe continued to decline until he was heavily in debt. Ever since his financial situation worsened, Ian and Louisa started having frequent arguments. At first, Louisa had been attracted to Ian because of his decent financial situation. But after he fell out with our family, he lost his allowance, and his cafe kept making losses too.

Third-Person POVVivian thought the whole issue with borrowing money would die down. But a few days later, while Vivian and Edmund were out, Ian showed up at the house with Louisa once again. As soon as Ian saw Caroline, he dropped to his knees. "Mom, please, you have to lend me the money this time."Caroline stopped what she was doing, looking at them in confusion. "You're asking this again? Didn't we tell you we don't have any money?"Ian lowered his head, too afraid to meet her gaze. He stammered, "Louisa's brother owes some money, and the creditors are pushing hard. Louisa can't handle it, and I just want to help her."Caroline's expression changed instantly. "It's not that I don't want to help you, but you haven't even sorted things out for yourself. How can you take on someone else's problems?"Ian panicked. "Mom, I can't leave Louisa to fend for herself. I've already promised to help her. I-I borrowed from an online moneylender for this, and the interest keeps growing. I

One weekend, Ian unexpectedly brought Louisa over for dinner at our house.Mom and Dad didn't give Louisa a warm welcome, but out of love for Ian, they didn't say much. While passing food to Ian, Mom reminded him, "You've been working hard lately, right? Make sure to eat more and keep your strength up."I silently watched Ian, who seemed hesitant to speak.Earlier, I had overheard Ian and Louisa talking on the balcony. Louisa blamed the bad business on a lack of promotion. Frowning, she paced back and forth, then said to Ian, "We need to boost our advertising so that more people are aware of our cafe."Ian looked worried and responded helplessly, "But we don't have any money left for advertising. We've spent everything just opening the cafe."Louisa's eyes lit up as she quickly suggested, "Why don't you borrow some money from your parents to fund advertising? Once business picks up, we can pay them back."Ian hesitated, his voice faltering. "But my parents used up all their mo

Ever since Ian told me he wanted to partner with Louisa, I had a feeling she wasn't as innocent as she seemed. I secretly had someone look into her, and sure enough, there were some shady things going on.Louisa had a brother named Quentin Nott, and he was a gambler. Recently, he had racked up a massive debt and found himself cornered. It seemed he remembered that Louisa was dating a guy from a relatively well-off family, and he saw an opportunity there.Even if their family wasn't rich, Louisa getting married meant she'd get a nice sum in the form of wedding gifts.Louisa's family was already known for valuing sons over daughters. So, when Quentin cried about his problems to Louisa, she decided to use her wedding gift to help pay off his debts. Louisa had it all figured out. She would use the money to clear her brother's debts, team up with Ian to run the cafe, and take half of the profits with zero effort. The cafe would be a steady source of income for her.As Ian's sister

My mom's face stiffened. Ian quickly wrapped his arm around Louisa's and said, "You promised to marry me, so no backing out now. The 300 thousand dollars will be taken care of by my family, right, Mom?"Standing to the side, Dad said with irritation, "You need to work and save up to marry your wife. Don't ask your mom for everything."Louisa seemed to sense that something was off. She looked at Ian with suspicion. "What does your father mean? Are you going to give the money or not? When will you give it?"Ian panicked. "Yes, yes, of course we will. Once the matter about this cafe is over, I'll pick a date and go to your family to ask for your hand in marriage."Then, he turned to Dad. "Dad, didn't you already agree to give us the money?"Dad shot him a glance. "You didn't mention anything about splitting up the business with your sister before. Besides, don't you see that Vivian is opening up a new cafe? There's a lot to handle, so we'll talk about it after everything settles do

On the day of the inventory review, Ian looked rather unhappy. He reluctantly followed me as I counted the inventory. I knew he was upset because I had shared his intentions about taking over the cafe in the family group chat, and now he was being mocked by our relatives. But honestly, the thought of being free from the previous arrangement, where I had worked all alone while splitting the earnings with him, made me smile uncontrollably. From now on, each of us would manage our own business. He'd go his way, and I'd go mine. People would only talk about how Ian forced me out for his girlfriend, but it wouldn't affect me.After Ian left the family group chat, Uncle Arthur got furious and insisted on coming over to supervise the inventory process, making sure Ian wouldn't take more than his fair share. Other relatives also jumped in to support me, offering to help me move the stock. Their support was unexpected but greatly appreciated. As we neared the end of the inventory, a
