Sable’s POV

After hours on the road, the house came into view like it had been waiting with its arms down.

Nothing had moved. Same gate. Same peeling paint on the porch rail. Same window where I used to watch Rhett’s car leave and tell myself I would not care. Seven years had happened everywhere except here.

Rhett parked and looked over. Ivo was still heavy in my lap, mouth open, dead to the world.

“Go on inside.” His voice stayed low. “Let him sleep a little longer out here with me.”

“No.

Sable’s POV I could not answer, because one lie would only ask for another. “Sab.” Dad’s voice scraped. “Is what Corin said true? Did you leave back then because you were pregnant?” His face made the pregnancy impossible to deny. I could hide a name. “Yes, Dad.” The word came out thin. “I’m so sorry. I regret it. I was foolish. I shouldn’t have stayed away from all of you because of my own stupidity. I’m so sorry Dad.” “Hey. No.” He shook his head as if he could refuse my guilt and keep his. “I was the one who failed. I didn’t understand why you left. I should have seen that something was wrong.” A pause that had seven years in it. “But who was the man? Who is Ivo’s father?” There it was. The question I had been walking around since the park bench. I could not point at one person. Not in this living room. Not with Rhett breathing in the doorway. “Do we know him, Sab?” Corin asked, and the air got smaller. “That man…” “I think Ivo wet himself.” Rhett’s voice cut across mine

Ivo was still heavy in my lap, mouth open, dead to the world. “Go on inside.” His voice stayed low. “Let him sleep a little longer out here with me.” “No. I’ll carry him. That’s better.” “I won’t say anything when he wakes up.” Rhett’s eyes went to the front door, then back to me. “You need to see them first. Talk. Before they meet him. Right?” I hated that it was true. Walking in after seven years with a child in my arms would turn the doorway into a trial. Ivo’s sleeping face made the other choice worse. I did not have the heart to shake him awake for my courage. “Sab.” “Fine.” I unbuckled. “Don’t say anything to him. If he wakes up, you b

  • My Brother’s Best Friend’s Hidden Son   Chapter 14 — Coincidence

Sable’s POV That morning I dressed Ivo like we were going somewhere ordinary. We were not. I was taking him out of town to meet a family he had never pictured. In his world there was me, Jerry, Lola, a puzzle on the floor. No uncle. No grandfather. “Mommy.” He wrinkled his nose while I fitted the mask. “I don’t have the flu. Why do I have to wear this?” I reached for the hat next. “Viruses are everywhere. Prevention is better than a cure.” It made sense to him. That was enough. The real reason sat in my throat and stayed there. This would be the first time Rhett met Ivo. I did not want that face in full light. Eight-thirty. The bus stop nearest the apartment. Melinda had the floor. The doctor had waved me off once he heard it was my father. I stood with a bag on my shoulder and Ivo’s hand in mine and pretended this was a bus. “Mommy, what are we waiting for?” “Someone is coming to pick us up.” “Who?” A friend was the wrong word. He had never been mine. Family was worse. On

  • My Brother’s Best Friend’s Hidden Son   Chapter 13 — Just a Ride

Sable’s POV I felt the wall going. Not all at once. Not a collapse you could point at and name. Just a thinness I had not felt when it was only Ivo and a locked number and a story about an accident. Ever since Rhett started showing up in the ordinary hours — desk, hallway, doorway — the thing I built to keep the past off my son had started to sweat. I could not say exactly why. Maybe it was his voice saying my father’s name like he still had a right to this family. Maybe it was Ivo’s face in Alden’s mouth, and the worse recognition under it: I had been seeing Rhett in Alden’s eyes for months and calling it coincidence because fate was a word I had already thrown back at him in a waiting room. Coincidence or fate. The question sat in my break like a second coffee I refused to drink. I took out my phone when the station went quiet. Father. Still blocked. The contact stared at me with no last message, no thread, only the decision I had made when Ivo was a weight I had not introdu

  • My Brother’s Best Friend’s Hidden Son   Chapter 12 — Don’t Come Looking

Rhett’s POV The next day I found her at the nurses’ station with Melinda. Heads close. Voices low. I could not hear the subject. I did not need to. The second Melinda spotted me, both of them did that thing women do in hospitals when a problem in a dark shirt is walking toward the desk. They tried to ignore me. Sable picked up a chart that had not needed picking up and went down the hall toward another patient’s room. I caught her before she crossed the threshold. Melinda watched from the station and said nothing. That was worse than gossip. Silence meant she was saving it. “Let go of me.” Sable pulled her arm free. “Don’t interfere with my work. I’m busy.” “You weren’t busy before I showed up.” I kept my voice down. “You were avoiding me.” She said nothing. The hallway smelled like antiseptic and lunch trays. A call bell rang two rooms away. She looked at the door like it could swallow her. “Corin came to visit my father yesterday.” Her eyes came up. She listened. She d

  • My Brother’s Best Friend’s Hidden Son   Chapter 11 — Long Time No See

Rhett’s POV “My friend’s coming today to visit you, Dad.” My father only nodded, as if the name of whoever walked through the door no longer belonged to him. My mother looked up from the chair she had claimed since dawn. “Who?” “Corin. It’s been ages. He’s in town. He can drop by.” “Ah. Corin.” She said it like a photograph coming out of a drawer. “Your old school friend. I haven’t heard that name in a long time.” I had not either. Not the way it used to sit in my mouth. After Isolde, after the announcement, the calls got thinner. I stopped going back to that house. He stopped asking why. That was how seven years ate a friendship without a fight. Time dragged. Alden slept more than he spoke. He arrived looking awkward in the lobby, taller than I remembered in the shoulders, older around the eyes. Then he saw me and the awkwardness cracked. He pulled me into a hug that knocked the air sidew
