LOGINSable’s POV
I waited for him in my room. I showered too fast. No makeup. Hair still damp. I put on the short silk pajamas, the ones that clung when I moved, and then I walked from the bed to the door and back again until the floor knew my route. My hands would not stay still. The lock was open. I had left it that way on purpose and I hated that I had. I looked at the clock. 12:00. He should have knocked. He did not. For a stretch of ugly minutes I thought he had changed his mind. Of course he had. He had called it a mistake in the yard. Every time I look at the clock, my heart feels like it's about to explode, for some reason but the nervousness is getting closer to me. My eyes also can't leave the direction of the door, and then the knock came. Soft. Two taps. My stomach dropped. I tried to put calm on my face like a mask that did not fit and opened the door. Rhett stood there in black trousers and a black T-shirt that fit him too well. Damp hair. Jaw tight. Eyes going down my body once, fast, like he had not given himself permission and took it anyway. I stepped aside. He came in. He locked the door behind him. The click sounded louder than it should have. For a second neither of us spoke. “You still have a chance to change your mind,” Rhett said. His voice was low, meant for this room only. “I will walk out. We can pretend this never happened.” “I won’t pretend it never happened.” He came closer. He stopped right in front of me. I had to tip my chin up. I could smell soap that was not mine this time. I could feel heat coming off him. “Have you done this before?” he asked. “Sex.” I shook my head. His throat moved. “Are you… a virgin?” I nodded. “Can you stop asking like that?” My voice came out thinner than the yard. I still used it. “I told you I’m not a little girl, Rhett.” “It’s going to hurt.” He said it like a warning and an apology in the same breath. “First time. I don’t get to pretend it won’t.” “I know.” His eyes went over me. Slow now. He stopped on my breasts, on the shape the fabric did not bother hiding, and something in his face went dark. “Can I open it?” I nodded. He started on the buttons one by one. Not ripping. Not rushing. Each one made the air colder on my skin. When the top slid off my shoulders and hit the floor, I was in the red bra I had put on because I wanted him to see it and now I wanted to cross my arms. I did not. “Look at you.” His voice dropped. “You look exactly like I imagined, Sable. So beautiful.” Heat crawled up my throat. I felt shy and seen in the same second. He looked at my eyes. “Can I?” I nodded again. He opened the bra and dropped it. Cool air. Then his hands were on me, warm, squeezing slow, thumbs dragging, and a sound came out of me before I could stop it. I clapped my palm over my mouth. “Look at me, Sable.” He pulled my hand down. “Tell me. Do you like it?” I nodded. “Use your voice.” “Yes.” It came out wrecked already. “Yes. I like it.” “Good.” He pulled his shirt off and the room got smaller. The chest I had seen behind a door I was not supposed to open. He walked me to the bed, laid me down, and hovered over me on his forearms. He kissed my forehead. Both cheeks. My nose. My chin. I opened my mouth for him and he passed it on purpose, a mean little tease that made me chase him. “Rhett…” “Be patient, baby.” His mouth brushed the corner of mine and still did not give it to me. “It’s going to be a long night for you.” Then he kissed my neck. I gasped. His mouth was hot. He found a spot under my ear and stayed there until my fingers dug into his shoulders. He went lower. My breast. He sucked, slow, then harder, and my eyes shut because looking at the ceiling was the only way I was going to stay quiet. He moved to the other one. Same attention. Same filthy patience. I pushed up on my elbows when his mouth left my skin and started traveling down my stomach, because I needed to see what he was going to do to me. He hooked his fingers in my shorts and my panties together and pulled. I lifted my hips. Then I was naked on my own bed in my father’s house with my brother’s best friend on his knees between my legs. I wanted to hide. I also wanted him to look. “Spread your legs for me.” I did. Little shy. I still did it. “Oh, fuck.” The words came out of him wrecked. “It’s so beautiful, Sable. You’re so perfect.” He looked first. Then he put his mouth on me. “Oh, shit—Rhett—” My back hit the mattress the second his tongue touched my clit. My hands fisted the sheets. I tried to close my legs and he held them open, forearms firm, no room to run from it. He licked again, slower, then sucked, and I bit my lip so hard it stung. “Is it good, baby?” “Yes.” I could barely get air. “So fucking good. Please. Don’t stop.” He did not stop. Then a finger circling where I was already wet, teasing the place that made my whole body jolt. “Rhett…” “Yes, baby.” “Please. Please don’t tease me.” “You’re soaked.” He sounded proud and starving at once. “Perfect. But you need to wait.” He pushed one finger inside me. I moaned. Too loud. I turned my face into the pillow and he pulled me back by the chin. “Easy, baby. Breathe. You’re going to feel more than this. Just wait.” He sat back enough to watch his hand. In and out. Slow. My thighs shook. I knew how I looked and I could not make myself care. “Fuck. You’re so sexy like this, Sable.” “Mm—I think I want to come, Rhett.” “Then come for me. That’s fine.” He kissed me so the sound had somewhere to go and sped his hand up until it broke. The first orgasm hit messy and helpless. I shook under him, gasping into his mouth, my nails in his shoulder, the house still asleep on the other side of a locked door. I was still trying to find my breath when he stood and pushed his trousers down. I saw him up close and my stomach dropped. Thick. Hard. Bigger than the glimpse through a cracked door. For a stupid second I thought it would not fit. He watched my face and read it. He came back over me. Hovered. Looked at my eyes and nowhere else. “It’s going to hurt.” His voice was quiet. Serious. “You can ask me to stop. I will stop.” “No.” I shook my head. “I won’t stop. I want to feel you. Here. Inside me.” He kissed me first. Then he pushed. The stretch burned. I made a sound that would have been a scream if his mouth had not been there. He squeezed my breast, not rough, just enough to give the pain somewhere else to go, and he worked in slow. Inch. Pause. Inch. “Look at me, baby. Open your eyes.” I did. His were dark and locked on mine. “Does it hurt?” I nodded. “Do you want to stop?” “No.” It came out wrecked and sure. “No. Please keep moving, Rhett. I want you.” He moved. Slow. Letting me catch up to him. The burn started to change. Not gone. Different. Heat under it. I grabbed his back and tried to breathe through every stroke. “Mm—so good.” My voice surprised me. “Please…Faster.” He shifted, knelt between my legs, spread me wider, and thrust faster. I clapped a hand over my own mouth and he pulled it away and replaced it with his. “Shh..Keep quiet, baby.” His forehead dropped to mine. “Or you’re going to wake them.” I nodded under his hand. He held my hips and drove deeper. The sound of it was filthy and soft at the same time. My eyes stung. It still felt good. Too good. I moaned into his palm and he groaned into my hair. “Oh, fuck.. You’re so fucking tight, baby. So good.” Another thrust. Deeper. “Fuck Sable! You take my cock so well.” “Rhett—” “I know baby, I’ve got you, just stay quiet.” He did not stay gentle after that. He still watched my face. He still slowed when I hissed. Then he buried himself again and I stopped thinking about the door, the hall, my brother two rooms away. There was only the stretch and his voice and my name in it. “Ohhh fuckkk..Sable” I came again with almost no warning, shaking, clenching around him, a broken sound trapped against his hand. That was what finished him. His rhythm went sloppy. He thrust once more, deep, and a groan tore out of him as he spilled inside me, hips jerking, his whole body going tight and then heavy. He fell onto me. Not all his weight. His cock still inside me. His mouth on my cheek. “You’re so amazing, baby.” The words were wrecked. “Fuck! That was perfect.” He kissed my cheek again and gathered me under him, still joined, still breathing like the night had knocked the air out of both of us. I stared at the ceiling of my own bedroom with my brother’s best friend buried in me and the lock turned and midnight already gone. I did not tell him that I hope this never ends.Sable’s POV The next day was a graveyard shift with no Melinda and too much quiet. I was behind the station updating a chart I already knew by heart when Rhett appeared on the other side of the counter like the night had sent him on purpose. No Isolde. Just him and a look that had not slept. “What brings you here?” I did not stand. Standing would look like I was ready for him. “You could have rung the bell. I would have come.” “Are you okay?” My hands stopped on the keyboard. “What do you mean?” “You look exhausted.” He said it again, slower. “Are you okay?” For one stupid second I thought he meant the waiting room. I shut it down. “Yeah. I’m fine. You should stay with your father. Unless it’s important, you can go.” He did not answer. He also did not go. The fluorescent light made the hollows under his eyes worse. He looked like a man who had been doing math since six o’clock last night and had run out of ways to make the numbers kind. “Your son’s face l
Sable’s POVI went back to work like the waiting room had never happened.Charts. Vitals. Mireille stopped at my desk with her cardigan pulled tight.“Sable, have you seen Rhett? He said he was coming in tonight.”“Oh. Yes.” I kept my eyes on the monitor. “I ran into him. He was on the phone with someone.”“Well.” Relief sat on her face like a small gift. “At least he kept his promise to show up. What about you? Aren’t you going home tonight?”“No. Night shift. I won’t leave until morning. You can go home if you want. I’ll look after your husband.”“It’s all right.” She patted the counter once. “It looks like Rhett is the one on duty tonight, so you don’t need to worry too much. Take a break when you can. I’ll head back to the room.”Six-thirty. Dinner trolley. The hour Alden had claimed as his.I pushed the door open and the air changed.Mireille by the bed. Sable’s POV I kept the promise. Saturday. The park. Ivo’s hand in mine and cotton candy already staining his mouth pink. Melinda had taken Alden for the day so I would not have to look a six-year-old in the eye and break a pinky swear. “Mommy.” Ivo tipped his head back until he almost walked into a stroller. “I want to go on the roller coaster.” “You’re not old enough for that yet.” “Aw. But I’m tall enough. Look.” He stretched onto his toes, cotton candy held high like proof. “See? Tall.” “Let’s play on something else, okay? Maybe next year.” “You said that last year too.” His head dropped. He did not let go of the sugar. I steered him toward the spinning cups and the small train and every ride that would not ask me to sign a waiver with a lie on it. We had a good day. That was the truth and also the problem. The park was full of families that came in threes. A father lifting a girl onto his shoulders. A man tying a shoe while a woman held two drinks. Ivo saw them. He pret
Sable’s POV Night fell, and I went back to the hospital hoping the doorway would be empty. I wanted Rhett gone. Out of the city. Back to whatever life had kept him away from his father for years. I wanted one shift where I could change an IV and not feel nineteen in a locked room. The doctor caught me before I reached Alden’s door. “Sab.” He looked tired in a different way than this morning. Smaller. “I’m sorry I snapped at you. I shouldn’t have. I know you’re tired.” “It’s okay, Doc.” I meant it enough to let him off the hook. I did not have space for two fights. “I understand. I’ll be more careful. I need to go in and change his IV.” I smiled because that was what you did in hallways, and then I went in. No Mireille. No Rhett. The room was only machines and an old man sleeping with his mouth slightly open. My shoulders dropped a fraction. I could work like this. I could be a nurse in a room that did not contain his son. I had the new bag in my hand when the door opened. R
Sable’s POV I thought I had done my best. I thought I had moved on. Then Rhett Voss was standing in front of me, and the walls I had spent seven years stacking around myself and Ivo went thin in a single breath. “Oh God. Rhett—you’re here.” Mireille was on him before I could blink. Arms around his neck. The sound a mother makes when the one person she has been waiting for finally walks through the door. His gaze never left me. I snapped out of it, turned my face away, and left the room like the floor was on fire. The hallway was too bright. Too clean. My eyes filled before I reached the corner. Not because Alden had gotten worse. I knew that grief. This was older. Footsteps. I did not turn fast enough. Rhett caught my wrist and spun me around. Seven years later his hand still knew the same place on my pulse. “It’s you, isn’t it?” His voice was low, wrecked, sure. “Sable.” “Let go of me.” I yanked free and wiped my face with the back of my hand like that could
Sable’s POVSeven years later..“I’m home.”I dropped my bag by the door and Ivo hit my legs before I could straighten up. Ice cream on his mouth. Sticky hands. The whole of him collided into me like he had been waiting at the exact minute.“Mommy.”I went down to his height and held him. He smelled like sugar and the soap Lola used at bath time. Six years old and already too fast. I felt it every time I walked in late.Lola came from the hall with her sling bag already on her shoulder.“Good evening. You look so tired, ma’am.”“I’m fine, Lola. Thank you for staying with him.”“That’s nothing. I love being with him. He’s a lovely boy.” She smiled at Ivo, then at me. “I need to go. See you tomorrow.”The door shut. The apartment went small and quiet in the way it always did when it was only us.Ivo tipped his face up, serious. “Mommy. Miss Lola said I need to be a good boy. Am I a good boy now?”“You always are.” I tapped his nose. “Come on. Teeth. Bed. You ate all the ice cream in th
