Chapter 38

Author: Chloe Laurent
Rosalie's POV

Mandatory therapy had been part of the custody agreement from the very beginning.

I'd read the clause once without really absorbing it. At the time, my attention had been fixed on the major provisions, the visitation schedule, overnight arrangements, and all the legal language about parental authority.

Family therapy.

Joint sessions.

Once a week for at least three months.

A recommendation from the guardian ad litem to establish a strong foundation for co-parenting.

  • My Brother's Best Friend's Secret Baby   Chapter 100

Rosalie's POV I quit on a Wednesday. I'd been thinking about it for two weeks, ever since the morning after the hearing, when I'd woken up at five-thirty after barely four hours of sleep. I'd lain there in the dark, going over my finances for what had to be the fortieth time, always arriving at the same conclusion. Without the income from the hotel, the numbers didn't work. And I no longer knew what to do. The truth was, they hadn't worked in a long time. I'd simply been covering the shortfall well enough to keep myself from falling over the edge. The hearing had broken something inside me. Not my finances. Those hadn't changed. It was my ability to keep everything together that cracked that day, after sitting in that borrowed blazer listening to fabricated lies delivered in polished legal language. I was running on reserves. The kind you tap into when there's nothing left but sheer determination. And even that reserve had its limits. I was reaching them.

  • My Brother's Best Friend's Secret Baby   Chapter 99

Aiden's POV I pulled out my phone. My investigator answered on the second ring. "I need everything by the end of the week," I said. "Everything you already have and everything you can uncover by Friday. Every last piece of it. The rental cars. The IP address. The hotel records. The shell companies and their incorporation documents. The communication logs between Elena and the guardian ad litem. Every piece needs to be organized so clearly that a judge can understand it in five minutes without anyone having to explain it." "Some of the communication records will require a subpoena or court order before they can be formally obtained," he replied. "Then we'll use what we already have, identify what a subpoena would likely reveal, and let Richard show the court why issuing one is necessary." I paused. "What do we have right now?" He listed everything. The rental cars. The IP address and the hotel's surveillance footage. The shell company registered under Marisol's name.

  • My Brother's Best Friend's Secret Baby   Chapter 98

Aiden's POV Richard put a hand on my arm before I'd taken three steps into the parking lot. "Give her a minute," he said. I stopped. I knew he was right. I knew it the way I knew most things I refused to accept, with immediate, absolute certainty. Rosie needed to be alone in that car. She needed those eleven minutes, or however long it took, without having to deal with my presence on top of everything else she'd already been forced to endure. I stood at the top of the courthouse steps, watching her car from a distance. The engine was off. Through the windshield I could make out her profile, her silhouette, her hands resting on the steering wheel, her head bowed slightly forward. She wasn't falling apart. There was nothing dramatic about it. She was simply a woman sitting alone in her car, crushed by the weight of what had just happened in that courtroom, left speechless by the injustice of it. Richard was talking beside me. He was explaining the process fo

  • My Brother's Best Friend's Secret Baby   Chapter 97

Rosalie's POV Sitting at my table in the blazer I'd borrowed from Sarah, I remained perfectly still. I didn't let a single hint of the storm raging inside me show. I was in a courtroom. My daughter's future was at stake. And I refused to let Elena Vasquez see that she'd landed a blow. Dana stood. Her objection was clear, concise, and precise. The statement had come from a third party with no standing in the proceedings. It consisted entirely of defamatory allegations disguised as personal observations, submitted without giving either party any opportunity to challenge them. It should be excluded in its entirety. The judge looked at Dana. She said she acknowledged the objection. She agreed that the filing had been procedurally improper and that she would not admit it as evidence. Then she added that she would nevertheless consider it as background context. Dana sat back down. The tension in her jaw was unlike anything I'd ever seen. I lowered my eyes to the

  • My Brother's Best Friend's Secret Baby   Chapter 96

Rosalie's POV I borrowed Sarah's blazer on Monday. She'd offered it without my even asking, which meant she'd seen me staring at my clothes and understood the problem before I'd said a word. It was a beautiful charcoal-gray blazer, impeccably tailored, the kind of piece that instantly gave someone credibility and authority in a room where important decisions were made. I didn't own anything like it. My wardrobe consisted of teacher clothes, paint-stained tops, and the green dress I'd worn to the art show. Nothing suitable for a courtroom. I picked it up from her classroom Monday afternoon, hung it on the back of my bedroom door, and found myself looking at it while I finished preparing my lesson plans. Tuesday morning, I put it on and stood in front of my bathroom mirror. I looked like someone trying very hard to look like she belonged. I pinned my hair up. I wore my nicest pair of small earrings. I made Lucy breakfast, helped her get dressed for school, and dropp

  • My Brother's Best Friend's Secret Baby   Chapter 95

Aiden's POV Richard said he'd get it prepared. After those two phone calls, I sat at my kitchen table thinking about Rosie teaching her morning classes ten kilometers away. Two days earlier, her name had appeared on a public social media page alongside a photograph of her daughter and a question about whether she was fit to be a mother. The account and comments were gone. But the people who had seen them had seen them. And school communities were small. News like that had a way of spreading quietly through tight circles, often without anyone realizing how far it had traveled. I called Rosie. She answered between classes. I could hear the sounds of a school hallway behind her, voices echoing in the distance. "I have an update," I said. "From the investigator. We have enough to move forward." "Tell me." I gave her the highlights. The IP address. The hotel. The second rental car. The pattern connecting everything. She was quiet for a moment. "Her name still
