Chapter 4

Author: Arlene
The door slammed shut. Evelyn grabbed a fistful of my hair and forced me to look up at her.

“You heard Salvador, didn't you?

“Once he's crowned, you're gone.”

The warm childhood memories slipped away: Salvador taking an arrow for me, Salvador comforting me until I fell asleep.

All I could see now was the twisted expression on his face.

I don't love Salvador anymore!

Evelyn forced me to kneel at her feet, but I'd rather die than look up at her.

“My father will stand up for me. He'll never let you get away with this!”

Evelyn laughed, low and nasty.

“Salvador will tell your father you ran off from the palace on a whim.

“Nobody will ever know what happened. He'll never find you!”

Evelyn yanked the crown off my head, threw it on the floor, and crushed it under her heel.

“Rowan, strip that royal gown off her!

“She's about to be shipped off to dark elf lands. She doesn't get to wear a light elf royal gown anymore.”

Rowan had already grabbed the buttons at my collar. I shoved him away as hard as I could.

“Get away from me. Don't you dare touch me!”

Rowan stumbled back a few steps, then caught me by the throat.

“Princess, you'd better behave. Don't make this hard on me.

“I'm Prince Salvador's man. If Crown Princess Evelyn gives me an order, I have to obey.”

He tore off my cloak and reached for the gown underneath.

I kept fighting him, but he wouldn't stop.

Fed up with my struggling, Evelyn kicked me hard in the side.

“Hold her down!

“She's my prisoner now! I'll teach her a lesson she'll never forget. Let's see if she still acts so high and mighty after this!”

Rowan pinned me to the table.

Evelyn pulled a whip from her belt and brought it down hard across my back.

The pain made me break out in a cold sweat. Blood seeped from my lips.

“By the time your father finds out, I'll already be queen.

“Once Salvador is king, your father won't have any power left.

“Accept your fate, Cecilia.”

I closed my eyes and prayed to the Goddess.

Please let my father know I'm here. I need him to come save me!

I'm not going to the dark elves. And I want Salvador stripped of his title!

Rowan tried to tear off my underdress, but I sank my teeth into his hand.

The taste of blood flooded my mouth. Rowan swore at me and raised his hand to hit me.

Just then, hurried footsteps sounded outside the palace.

Before his hand could land, magic blasted the doors apart.

I pushed myself to my feet, using the table for support, and saw my father arrive with the royal guards.

He came straight to me. An orb of light gathered in his palm and shattered my chains.

Then he wrapped his own robe around my shoulders.

“Cecilia, tell me who did this!”

I clung to his hand. I didn't have the strength to say a word.

My father's face darkened with fury as he turned to Evelyn.

“How dare you lay a hand on my daughter?”

Salvador lunged at Evelyn and grabbed her by the shoulders.“That baby isn't mine. Evelyn, you'd better explain yourself!“I trusted you so much. I didn't care that you were a dark elf. I was willing to defy my own father to bring you home.“And this is how you treat me? How dare you betray me!”Evelyn shoved his hands away and spat at him.“Salvador, you're nothing now.“If you were still crown prince, who would have dared to test me like this?“This is all your fault for being so useless!”Beside himself with rage, Salvador slapped her hard.“Evelyn, I'll never let you get away with this!”Evelyn held her cheek and burst into wild laughter.“What do you have left? You're not the crown prince anymore. No lands, no army. Nothing.“If I'd known, I never would have wasted my time on a loser like you!”Salvador lost control. He hated her now as much as he had ever loved her.He grabbed her by the throat and squeezed, cursing her the whole time. But Evelyn wasn't one to back down. She kept

When my father finished, Salvador swayed and nearly fell. The color drained from his face.“Father, you can't make a decision like this so hastily!“Nobody has even looked into what happened yet. This isn't fair to me!”My father spoke gravely.“Salvador, I've already sent the guards to find proof.“But understand this. Whatever evidence they find won't change my decision.“You're Cecilia's brother, yet you failed to protect her.“You're the Crown Prince, yet you stood by and let someone attack the High Priestess!“Those two failures alone are reason enough to strip you of your title.”All the fight went out of Salvador.“Father, I've already told you! I had no idea Evelyn would treat Cecilia that way!“This has nothing to do with me. Please, Father, give me one more chance.”Tears of regret rolled down Salvador's face. When he realized our father wasn't going to change his mind, he turned to me.“Cecilia, I know I was wrong.“I'll make things right. Get your hands off her!”Salvador didn't look at me. Prince Salvador and the crown princess made me do it.”He shook his head frantically, trying to shift the blame.“I only wanted the princess to behave. I know I was wrong.”My father ignored his excuses. Countless needle-thin rays of light pierced Rowan's body.He collapsed, screaming. His arms hurt so badly that he couldn't lift them. When my father spoke, his voice was ice cold.“As of today, you're no longer a member of the royal guard.“Take him away.
