Chapter 4

Author: Sugar Drop
Ryan's mind was slipping. Most of what he did now was just instinct.

And I knew better than anyone how to calm him down.

I bent down and kissed his cool lips gently. "I'll never leave you. I'm just gonna get the door."

For a second, I saw something flashing in his eyes. Then, after hesitating, he let go of my hand.

-

When I opened the door for Vanessa, I was on the phone with a doctor from the hospital downtown.

The lock was seconds from being busted open, but I stayed calm and swung the door wide.

Vanessa stood there holding a fire extinguisher, ready to smash it down. I raised a hand, signalling her to stop, and she froze.

"Yes, we're at the Grandview Hotel. He's got food poisoning. You'll have an ambulance here in ten minutes? Good. I'll bring the patient downstairs."

I hung up, then gave Vanessa a sincere look. "Are you Ryan's friend? He ate something bad and got poisoned. Could you help me carry him to the lobby? The ambulance is almost here."

Her expression shifted, as if she didn't understand what was happening. This wasn't how she thought it would go. But she couldn't figure out what had changed.

In the hotel lobby, Ryan leaned against me. His lips were pressed tightly, his long lashes trembling. The little knot between his brows made him look fragile.

The book always described him as an almost unreal kind of handsome—someone even the hottest celebrities couldn't beat.

Before, I'd gotten used to Ryan. I thought he'd always look like this. But now that I was awakened, my heart pounded like a drum as I looked at him lying quietly in my arms.

Damn. He was fine. Anyone who said otherwise was blind.

Ryan, barely conscious, started to lean onto Vanessa, his head dipping toward her. I quickly pulled him back, flashing her a smile that basically said, "Sorry about that. My man's not at his best today."

It was a little teasing and smug.

Vanessa's eyes turned colder.

The thrill I got from fighting the heroine for a man was like nothing else.

When the ambulance arrived, the EMTs loaded Ryan onto a stretcher, and I followed him inside. Vanessa tried to climb in as well, but I stopped her politely.

"Thanks for your help, but there's no room for you. I'll take it from here."

She opened her mouth, clearly confused.

She probably thought I was supposed to be Melvin's simp and couldn't understand why I suddenly cared so much about Ryan.

But I didn't care to explain. And I definitely didn't care if she was upset.

I shut the door right in her face.

At the hospital, I explained Ryan's condition to the doctors and told them he had drunk something unknown.

They diagnosed him with poisoning and rushed him to get his stomach pumped.

Half an hour later, Ryan was wheeled back to his room, still asleep.

I went down to the shop and bought clean towels and water, planning to wipe his face.

But when I came back, I froze.

Vanessa was standing at his bedside, slowly leaning down, looking as if she was about to kiss him.

"Ryan!" I yelled.

She shot up instantly, her face burning with embarrassment.

I stormed over to the bed, frowning hard at his lips. I wasn't sure whether she had kissed him already.

That was when Ryan finally woke up.

Before I could accuse Vanessa, she shoved me aside and leaned in close, worry dripping from her voice.

"Ryan, are you okay? When you called me, I tried my best to rush over." She gave me a sharp look. "But Ms. Cobbett got there before I could."

There was something weird about her gaze, as if she knew Ryan's poisoning was all my fault.

I replied, "But I checked all the messages that day. Ryan never called you. Is it possible that the drink Ryan had had the same hallucinogenic effect as this powder?"I tilted my head, eyes locked on Vanessa. "Honestly, I'm super curious. How did you manage to get your hands on so much banned stuff without anyone noticing? Who are you, really? It's fascinating."I didn't call her out about the system. Not yet.The first time she drugged Ryan, it was to sleep with him. The second time, it was to drive a wedge between us. I had to admit, those were good plans.Vanessa's face flickered as her calmness slowly slipped away, but it lasted barely a second. She smoothed her expression and said coolly, "Don't be ridiculous. Who could even get banned substances? If you really think that, why not just call the cops?"She grabbed her bag, stood up, and let out a cold laugh. "I came here as a courtesy, but you're accusing me of absurd things. Instead of throwing dirt at me, maybe you should as

I didn't stick around. I dropped the flash drive on the table and turned to leave."Wait."Melvin's voice stopped me. I looked back and saw that smug grin of his—the one he probably thought could charm any girl alive. He tilted his head, all sly, and said, "If you're willing to dump Ryan and cut ties with him for good, maybe I'll date you."Typical Melvin. Even now, he still thought he had a chance to keep me dangling. Two days ago, I probably would've said yes without even thinking. But right then, all I saw was a disgusting pile of trash."No, thanks." I pushed down my disgust, gave a small, polite smile, and said, "You're out of my league."Then I walked out, leaving him staring after me in shock.-The air was crisp, the sky clear.I met Vanessa at a café. By the time my Americano was almost gone, she finally showed up."What did you wanna talk about?" she asked, straight to the point. She didn't like me. I didn't like her either. It was hard to be calm around someone w

I continued, "The story was supposed to end with you meeting the girl you were destined for, while everyone hated me and I died a tragic death."But I don't want to be ruled by fate. That's not the real me. I don't love Melvin. I don't want to do things that go against my heart. And the last thing I ever want… is to see you fall for somebody else."All I wanted was to stay with Ryan forever and live a quiet, simple life together.A tear slipped down my cheek and fell onto the back of his hand.I was crying, looking all messy and raw.His long fingers brushed the corner of my eye. I didn't even notice when he'd loosened the rope around me, but once it was off, I grabbed his sleeve and pulled myself closer, inch by inch. Then I pressed my lips against his. This time, Ryan didn't hold back. He leaned in, taking the kiss deeper. There was a mattress on the floor, wide enough for the both of us, and he pushed me down on it. His hands slid under my shirt, finding my waist, the spot th

"Sheila, I'm done pretending to be the good guy. I just want to keep you with me. Call me a creep, call me a criminal, I don't care."Something in me must've lit the fire, because Ryan wasn't hiding anymore. His gaze was burning when he looked at me, as if he wanted to swallow me whole."You'll stay here. I'll feed you when you're hungry and carry you when you need the bathroom."When you sleep, I'll be right next to you. All you gotta do is be good and listen." His hand brushed across my face, his dark eyes holding a perfect reflection of me inside them."I've figured things out already. Please, let me go." I tilted my face up, giving him my best pitiful look. That trick always worked on him."No." His eyes flickered as he wavered, but his voice stayed firm.Of course, I knew how hard it was for him."Melvin's not a good guy. Even if it makes you hate me, I can't stand by and watch him trick you." Ryan's face was pale as he said it.I used to hate when he talked trash about

I pulled myself out of old memories and poured Ryan a glass of orange juice before sliding it across the table to him. I'd tasted it earlier—it was sweet enough to cover the bitterness of the drug."She came by for work," Ryan said after a sip. "That's all it was. Why? You worried about her?"He didn't notice anything strange. Or maybe he just never doubted anything I gave him."I don't know," I said, pretending to joke. "I think she kinda has a thing for you. Maybe you two are the real main couple of this world. Maybe one day, you two will fall in love, and I'll just fade away."Ryan frowned, his expression tight. "Was that why you were showing off in front of her? Marking your territory?" He lifted the glass again, almost finishing it. The more he drank, the faster the drug would work.He tugged open the top button of his shirt, his pale skin showing. He pressed his hand against his temple as drowsiness started creeping in."Do you think you'll fall for her?" I asked."What…"

I pushed down the twist in my chest, forced a smile, and said to Ryan, "You should've told me you've got company. I won't interrupt your work talk. I'll just head to my room."I slid the roast chicken into the fridge, pretending not to notice the eyes burning into my back, and shut the door behind me.A few minutes later, there was a soft knock. Ryan's voice came through. "It's me. Open the door."I sat at my desk while spinning my pen, not moving."Don't be such a baby," he said, a sigh caught in his voice. It was as if he could see through the door."Alright, then. I'll go," he added. He was leaving? My heart skipped. I jumped up and opened the door, only to find him still standing there, smiling. He had never moved.I gave him my sweetest grin and opened my arms. "I want a hug."He didn't hesitate. His arms went around me instantly.I leapt and wrapped my legs around his waist, clinging to him. Worried I'd fall, he panicked for a second, his hands moving quickly to hold me
