Chapter 3

Author: Hamkid
The second I got back to my desk, Tracy Nolan leaned over. "So? What happened?"

"They already decided. Caroline's getting it."

Tracy's eyes went wide.

"That bitch?! Isn't it enough that she's all over Stefan every single day? Now they're making her a director too? I swear, I'm going to rip her face off."

She shot to her feet.

I pressed firmly on her hand to stop her and shook my head.

"You're just letting it go? What did Stefan say?"

"Stefan's the one who turned in her application."

"Oh my God, what a pair of scumbags! You're just going to let them get away with it?"

Right then, Stefan and Caroline finally emerged from Simon's office.

Caroline had her arm hooked through his.

They leaned in close, whispering to each other and trading lovestruck glances as if no one else existed.

Stefan pulled a box out of his pocket and proudly held it out to Caroline.

Inside was an antique sapphire necklace.

If I remembered right, it was a family heirloom.

The same one he'd once said would go to his future wife.

He gently fastened it around Caroline's neck.

Caroline was so excited she was close to tears. She covered her mouth and couldn't hold back a gasp.

I remembered when he'd done the same thing for me. He'd pulled out a diamond ring and slipped it onto my finger. "My princess, I'll love you forever. I'll never betray you."

But now, Caroline was in my place.

The whole office went silent.

Every eye in the room turned toward us.

Everyone knew Stefan and I were about to get married. The pity on their faces hit me like a slap.

The two of them seemed to snap out of it.

Caroline caught my eye and hurried to explain, making sure the whole room could hear. "Nina, don't get the wrong idea! Stefan only lent me the necklace for tomorrow's work event. That's all. There's nothing between us!"

Stefan hurried over too and took my hand.

"I'm just letting her borrow it. The necklace will be yours after the wedding. I know where my priorities lie."

I pulled my hand free and stepped back.

"The necklace looks good on Caroline."

Caroline fidgeted with her fingers, looking taken aback. "Maybe I should just take it off..."

"No!" Stefan immediately stepped between us, shielding Caroline. "Nina, stop making a scene. You're only embarrassing yourself by acting this desperate."

Ha.

I laughed, mostly at myself.

"Desperate? Please. I don't even want it."

I looked at Stefan. "Go ahead and keep the necklace for Caroline."

"I said I was keeping it for you." Stefan frowned.

"Don't bother."

I didn't want it anymore.

"You're really just letting it go?" Tracy squeezed my hand tight.

I squeezed back. "I'm leaving anyway."

I yanked the ring off my finger and threw it in my bag.

That afternoon, I put my resignation letter on Simon's desk.

He sighed. "This company's about to lose a lot more than a director."

I just smiled and didn't say anything.

When I walked out of Simon's office, I saw that Stefan's door was shut.

Caroline's desk was empty too.

Tracy caught up with me at the elevators. Her eyes were red.

"If those two ever dare..."

"No one's going to push me around anymore," I said. "I'm the one who's done with this."

I walked out of the building, pulling my suitcase behind me, and headed for the airport.

On the way, Stefan kept texting me.

"Nina, I'm sorry. What happened today was my fault. Don't be mad."

"I'm not mad."

I knew he'd never really been sorry.

"When you're back from your trip, I'll be there for your fitting."

Sitting at the gate, I sent him one last reply.

"Don't bother. Go with Caroline. We're done."

I turned off my phone and closed my eyes.

The plane was about to take off, and I never wanted to see that man again.

  • My CEO Fiancé Let His Assistant Wear My Wedding Dress   Chapter 9

In my second year overseeing operations at Orbis, I started focusing on charity work.I led the launch of three mobile health programs in remote areas, sending Orbis's mobile clinics to provide free care at the foot of Montana's snowy mountains and in small coastal towns in Oregon.Late one night, I'd just gotten off an overseas video call when I saw the breaking news about an earthquake in Alaska. The screen showed collapsed homes and survivors in tattered clothes.Injured kids were crammed into the emergency shelter. Some were shivering from the cold. Others were crying out in pain. The relief sites were running dangerously low on medicine, warm clothes and emergency equipment. It all weighed on me like a heavy stone.I decided right then to lead a team myself. We'd load up donated supplies and leave for Alaska first thing in the morning.I'd been at the field clinic with the medical team for four grueling days. The first time I met Harry Dawson was during a sudden aftershock.I was

I never in a million years expected Stefan to get so desperate that he'd pull an even more outrageous stunt to win me back.I'd just said goodbye to an important business partner outside the Orbis building.Suddenly, strangers were pouring in from every direction. They lined up neatly on both sides of the plaza, each holding a red rose. One by one, they held their roses out to me.One after another. All 999 strangers crowded in front of me, holding out 999 red roses.People passing by who had no idea what was going on started pulling out their phones. At the far end of the crowd, Stefan slowly stepped forward. He was holding the 1,000th red rose and a brand-new ring.It clicked instantly.Stefan had set this whole thing up.He was using the grand romantic spectacle and the crowd to corner me. He wanted to leave me no choice but to forgive him in front of everyone.I was so angry I almost laughed out loud. With thousands of people watching, he rushed up to me, broke down and begged for

Stefan still wouldn't give up.For days after that, rain or shine, he waited outside the Orbis building. The once-proud CEO who'd always looked down on everyone had lost all his former confidence. No more crisp suits. No more swagger. His eyes were hollow with exhaustion and regret, and he looked thinner and more haggard by the day. He'd convinced himself that if he kept showing up day after day, desperately trying to prove how much he meant it, I'd eventually change my mind and take him back. But he still refused to understand. I didn't leave because of some fight or misunderstanding. I left because I'd finally seen what he was at his core: selfish, always chasing whatever served him.Seven years of disappointment had piled up. There was no coming back from that.Meanwhile, Caroline was the first to face the consequences—and they hit her hard.Word of the lies exposed in front of the Orbis building that day spread through the whole industry in no time.Everyone finally saw her for who

Early that evening, I walked out of the Orbis building with a few executives, still talking about rolling out the new project. That was when Stefan came toward me. His face was covered in stubble, and there were dark circles under his eyes.He pulled out the engagement ring and held it up in front of me. "Nina. I know I was wrong. It's all my fault. I was blind, and I hurt you. Give me one more chance, okay?"A few employees nearby quietly stopped to watch, curious to see what would happen.I stepped back and shook my head. "Stefan, we were done a long time ago."All the love I'd felt over the years had drained away, little by little, long before today."How can this be over?!" His voice shook with disbelief. "We had seven years together! We lived in that tiny 110-square-foot apartment. We cooked instant pasta together during snowstorms. I remember the first roses I ever gave you. The mugs we made together and carved our little symbol into. We promised we'd love each other forever. We

My plane touched down in New Jersey. After seven years away, I was finally home.My parents were already waiting at the door.No blame. No questions. Just heartache written all over their faces."Oh, sweetheart. You've been through so much." My mother stepped forward and held me tight. My father stood beside her and patted my shoulder. "You're back, and that's all that matters. You'll always have a place to come home to."In that moment, I was just Nina, the daughter they loved.Three days later, I put on a sharp designer suit and headed to Orbis headquarters. In the top-floor conference room, every senior executive was already seated.Everyone knew that today, Orbis's only heir was officially taking her place as vice president. For the entire meeting, I stayed calm and in control. I went over the projects, pinpointed the weak spots in our market strategy and laid out plans for a brand-new line of medical technology. Now I could show them everything those seven years of hands-on work h

Stefan stood in the hospital hallway. At first, he'd brushed off Nina's message as something she'd sent in the heat of the moment. For seven years, every fight and every stretch of silence had ended the same way: Nina gave in.His fingers trembled as he called her, but the call went straight to voicemail. An automated voice told him she was unavailable.Once. Twice. Three times.Every single time."Stefan!"Caroline's sugary voice came from behind him. "I'm next. Will you come in with me? Please?" She tugged at his sleeve and looked down, stroking her belly.Stefan jerked free. "Something came up. I have to go right now."Caroline panicked. "Stefan, how can you leave? They're about to check on our baby!"Baby. The word hit a nerve, leaving Stefan rattled."Go ahead and get checked. Just call me if you need anything, okay?"Caroline froze where she stood. "What's so important that you have to go right now?"Stefan swallowed his impatience and patted her hand to soothe her. "Be good. I r
