Chapter 2

Author: Starlet
Sophia promised that Nathan would take good care of Lucky.

Later on, when I saw with my own eyes that the two of them were indeed treating Lucky well, I believed her.

Sophia said, "Don't mention it. Your health still hasn't fully recovered, yet you insisted on coming all the way to the cemetery yourself. Potato will definitely appreciate this."

Nathan sighed. "It's my fault. If my health had been better and I had spent more time with him, he wouldn't have run outside and gotten hit by a car."

The two of them stood there smiling. In a place like a cemetery, it felt especially blinding to look at.

When Sophia and I locked eyes, the smile on her face vanished instantly, replaced by a disgusted look.

She scowled. "Lucas, you followed me here again?"

Hearing how delusional she was, I let out a cold laugh. The moment was so absurd that laughter was the only sane response.

I glanced at her with an icy expression. "I'm not that pathetic."

Sophia's face showed nothing but contempt as she crossed her arms and raised an eyebrow.

"You didn't follow me? Lucas, this isn't the first time you've pulled something like this. Do you really think I wouldn't know you? What reason could you possibly have for being at a cemetery? Or did you come early to pick out a burial plot for your mom?

"Let me guess, you're trying to get my attention with this stunt again, right? Last month I already had a specialist look at her, and they said if she'd just cooperated with treatment, she could be completely cured!"

I did not even bother giving her another glance as I turned to leave. "If that's what you want to think, then there's nothing I can do."

My sudden cold indifference made Sophia feel uneasy. Anger flashed across her face as she grabbed my arm, and her voice turned icy.

"I heard you even bought some kind of critical illness insurance for your mom before. Then, you kept using her condition to manipulate me with all your sob stories. Lucas, if she dies, you'd get a nice payout, wouldn't you? That's why you're letting her refuse treatment! You know damn well what you're up to!"

I jerked my arm free from Sophia's grip, and the momentum caused her to stumble back several steps.

Nathan quickly caught her and cursed at me. "Lucas, what kind of man are you? How could you hit your own wife? How low can you possibly go?"

In the past, I would have just laughed off Sophia's belittling and attacks. But now, I would not allow anyone to slander Mom.

I growled, "Sophia, I have had enough of you. My tolerance toward you was never permission for you to insult my mother repeatedly. And you, Nathan. You knew exactly what you were doing and still chose to play the third party.

"The only reason you are still alive is that I donated blood to you. You should be on your knees and thanking me for saving your miserable life and letting you keep breathing! All you know how to do is hide behind Sophia and talk shit. Nathan, what kind of man does that make you?"

My words were like a fuse to a keg of gunpowder, instantly setting Sophia off. She had not expected me to actually talk back to her, and the look in her eyes went from shock to murderous in an instant. She rushed at me to slap my face, but I grabbed her arm and shoved it away.

Seeing that I dared to fight back, she immediately called out to the bodyguards nearby.

"Guards! Hold him down and make him beg for Nathan's forgiveness!"

The guards rushed forward at her command.

However, Nathan stepped in front of them first. He turned to Sophia and said gently, "Sophia, forget it. It is not worth it to get angry over an ungrateful jerk like him."

Sure enough, Nathan's words worked like a calming drug, and Sophia instantly calmed down.

"Lucas, this is the last time. If there's a next time, I won't help your mother anymore!"

After Sophia said that, she took Nathan's arm and walked away without looking back.

I stood with my back to them as the setting sun cast their silhouettes in the fading light. It looked almost like a silent announcement of their victory.

"Sophia, we're getting divorced on Monday! These five years were nothing but me being blind!"

I ignored Sophia's rage and left the cemetery quickly.

Celeste cut Nathan off, "Don't bother explaining. Let me handle this."Instantly, his eyes filled with panic as he looked at her.Celeste said, "You think you know why Nathan came back to the country? He's nothing but a relentless fly. We're already divorced, but wherever I go, he has to follow. You've been forcing Lucas to give Nathan blood transfusions, haven't you? "The truth is, the blood never actually went into his body. It was sold behind your back. Even the bone marrow Lucas donated was the same way! Because he's not really sick. He only pretended to be so he could win your sympathy and use your money to make up for me."She added, "Remember, when Nathan divorced me, he chose to walk away empty-handed, leaving the entire estate to our unborn child and me as compensation. Sophia, you really are pathetic." After hearing all this, Sophia was on the verge of a complete breakdown. "Shut up! You're lying about everything! Nathan would never do something like that for you!""T

In the end, I still attended Monroe Group's 30th anniversary gala that day.I had no choice since Cloudpeak Enterprise had business dealings with Sophia's company.Celeste was the CEO of Cloudpeak Enterprise, and I was her special assistant. So, we both had to attend. After signing in, I saw quite a few familiar faces at the event. They all looked at me with curious gazes. "Not going to catch up with your former colleagues?" Celeste stood beside me, watching them.I smiled. "Ms. Rivera, please stop teasing me.""I think your former colleagues really do want to chat with you." When Celeste said this, she was not looking at me. Instead, she turned toward Sophia, who was walking in our direction. The moment Sophia saw Celeste standing next to me, her smile stiffened and became fake. She said with a sarcastic tone, "Well, well, I never expected Ms. Rivera to grace us with her presence today. What an honor!"Although Sophia was smiling, the hatred in her eyes toward Celeste was i

I thought about how if I sided with Celeste, it would probably bring me even more trouble.Seeing the shifting expression on my face, Celeste spoke again. "Nathan is my ex-husband." "What?" I exclaimed. Just as expected, this so-called rival relationship was anything but simple. She explained, "After high school, I went abroad to study, and Nathan followed me all the way overseas. Later, he convinced my father with talk of a business alliance between our families. Since it was an arranged marriage, there was never any love involved."But Nathan wanted more than that. Maybe he thought he was some kind of domineering CEO living out a twisted romance fantasy. On one hand, he'd say how much he loved me, and on the other, he'd abuse me, belittle me, gaslight me, lock me in the mansion, and cut me off from the outside world."I nearly lost my life trying to divorce him and get back to my family. But he wouldn't leave me alone and followed me back to the country. That day I got in tha

Just as I expected, no one came after me. After leaving the mansion, I wandered aimlessly down the street.Bitterness welled up in my chest, but I could not shed a single tear. A car horn yanked me back to reality. The driver rolled down the window, and only then did I see clearly that it was a woman."Well, if it isn't my savior! What happened to you? You saved me last time, and I never got the chance to thank you. It's so windy out here. Get in, I'll give you a ride."Hearing the woman say this, I tried hard to remember. I did recall saving a woman who had been in a car accident. After that, I took her to the hospital and paid part of her medical bills, then left once the doctors contacted her family.Later, she had called to thank me, but I politely refused. She tried reaching out a few more times, but eventually, the calls stopped. That had been about six months ago.Right now, I had no other options, so I awkwardly got in the woman's car. Soon, at the woman's signal, the d

Suddenly, Nathan appeared from behind and kicked me. "You ungrateful bastard, you've really crossed the line! Sophia bought you a mansion to live in, sports cars to drive, and she even gave you a job! What gives you the right to talk to her like that? Get on your knees and apologize to Sophia this instant!"My hands hit the floor as Nathan's sneak attack from behind left a throbbing pain in the back of my knees. Hearing his words, a surge of strength exploded from within my body.I got up and immediately threw a punch right at Nathan's face.Sophia screamed, but it did not stop me. When Nathan tried to fight back, I landed another punch that knocked him to the ground.I shouted, "Just who the hell do you think you are? This is between Sophia and me. What gives you the right to stick your nose in our business? You want to take my place? Fine, no problem. As long as Sophia signs these papers and we get our divorce certificates, you can step in openly. Otherwise, you're just a dirty h

Sophia's lips were warm against mine, and my mind was blank.Suddenly, she grabbed me and said, "Let's go get married."Just like that, she dragged me to the courthouse, and we registered our marriage. Everything felt like a dream. That day, I stared at our marriage certificate with a stupid grin on my face for hours. It was the happiest day of my life.If only I had not known she had set this whole thing up, and that I was the target of her scheme. If only I had not known she did all of this for another man.The dream shattered instantly, revealing what it truly was. It was nothing more than a beautifully decorated illusion.I should have seen it clearly from the moment she kept dragging her feet about getting our marriage license. What kind of powerful family would simply ignore someone like me without even mocking or humiliating me? They had only been keeping me around to keep me under control.I sat in the dimly lit living room, staring at the pocket watch Mom had left b
