Chapter 2

Autor: Perfect Timing
I worked hard for many years, but only saved two million dollars in savings and a house.

Although these assets were not insignificant, they could not buy my life. Thus, I chose to give up on treatment and decided to keep this money for Jane.

However, she transferred the two million dollars to Anthony without a word half a month ago.

"Why would he come to me asking for help if it was not necessary? His business needs funding; what harm would it do for me to contribute some money as a partner?"

I was so angry that I almost passed out. I asked her to go and get the money back.

She glared at me and refused to go home.

During the last two months of my life, she was busy helping her first love with his business.

Even when the doctor gave me the critical illness notice, she still did not answer the phone or respond to my text messages.

However, I received a text message about our house being used as collateral for a loan.

She even mortgaged our only house to the bank.

On the brink of death, I stared at the mortgage notification on my phone and dialed her number.

Enduring the double pain of physical and mental suffering, I told her in the calmest voice possible. "I'll forget about the two million. I'm leaving the house for Maya. Don't touch it."

When I made that call, I almost could not stop myself from telling her the truth. "Honey, come to the hospital quickly, I... I might not make it."

However, her furious voice came from the other end of the line. "Gale, if you'd been able to come up with the money, would I have had to mortgage the house? You're a businessman too; why can't you understand Anthony's difficulties?"

The sudden pain in my abdomen was nothing compared to the agony Jane's remarks were causing me.

I endured the pain and continued to persuade her. "Don't trust Anthony so much. If we lose the house, where will you and Maya... our whole family live?"

She scoffed. "Don't look down on me. Let me tell you something. I can live just as well without you."

Before, she disliked tiring work and socializing, preferring to stay home to play games and watch videos for the seven or eight years after our marriage.

Now that Anthony was back, she suddenly had a burning desire to be a career woman.

Every word she uttered felt like a knife stabbing into my heart. "If you're a man, stop being so petty! What's wrong with me helping Anthony? He needs encouragement and support right now!"

I thought, 'Haha. He just needs cash flow for his business, while I'm about to be killed by this illness.'

Suddenly, I did not want to say anything anymore.

After hanging up, I told the doctor, "I'm not getting treatment."

Since living was unbearable, perhaps choosing death would be easier.

What I did not expect was that my soul would remain in this world even if I died. I watched helplessly as she devoted herself to the man who had once abandoned her, providing him with money and effort in an almost humiliating manner.

She did not even have time to pick up our five-year-old daughter, Maya, from school.

Seeing her and Anthony embracing and kissing in front of the cameras, I felt a deep sense of sorrow for myself lying in the morgue.

Jane had no idea that the torment of illness in the past few years had left my business in complete disarray. That two million dollars and my only property were all I could leave her.

She probably had already forgotten how Anthony had dumped her and how she had desperately attempted suicide by cutting her wrists.

Ten years ago, Anthony abandoned his first love, Jane, without saying goodbye.

Outsiders would think it was just a normal breakup, but I knew it was because Anthony knew Jane had breast cancer.

His so-called breakup and leaving to pursue a better future was nothing more than a despicable excuse to shirk responsibility.

Unable to bear the blow of the breakup, Jane attempted suicide by cutting her wrists in her rented apartment, leaving a pool of blood.

If I had not received her farewell text message and rushed over because I sensed something was wrong, she might have died.

"Let me tell you something. I can live just as well without you."When the dial tone followed that, my mind went blank. The doctor solemnly asked me, "Are you sure you don't want treatment?"I nodded. "Yes."It was an unpredictable, last-ditch operation, and there was no need for me to risk it for her anymore.Anthony left again without saying goodbye. Perhaps he would not go very far this time.He deceived not just Jane. Someone had already collected all the evidence and submitted it to the police. Him being arrested and brought to justice was just a matter of time. However, our only house had already been seized and was waiting to be auctioned off.Jane was curled up in the small rented room, with a row of messy medicine bottles beside the bed.It felt as if she was back in that dark and cramped rented house ten years ago. Suffering from illness, she kept sending text messages, yet she would never receive a reply from me again. The pain made it difficult for her to get up,

"It's ridiculous! What man could stand the way you are?"He smiled and pinched Jane's chin. "Flirting with you was pretty exciting, thanks to that pretty face of yours, but I won't take things any further."She struggled free; Anthony immediately turned grim and forcefully slammed the door shut.Through the door, his voice came with a teasing tone. "You should know your place. Do you think you're still a young girl in her 20s?"Jane walked away with a livid expression. She ran to call the police, but when the records were shown one by one, even the police looked at her in confusion. "You signed a gift agreement."She hurriedly explained. "I was deceived. He told me that formal procedures were needed to protect my rights. Because... Because we were classmates, I didn't pay close attention."The police officer seemed as if he had seen it all, even repeating, "Classmates?"Jane stammered and remained silent. After her case was reluctantly accepted, she walked back in a dazed stat

"Did he bully you again, Jane? You shouldn't keep it in. Just get a divorce if it's really unbearable. The money is all in the company projects. How could we withdraw all of it in a short time? If he's fussing over it, I think he’s doing it on purpose."She wiped her tears and pleaded urgently. "No, Anthony. Help me think of a solution. I need this money today!"She began to push the door forcefully, but Anthony firmly held the door, preventing her from entering.Just then, someone peeked through the crack of the door."How come you still haven't broken up with this old hag?" It was a strikingly beautiful woman with a sharp chin, wearing Anthony's shirt and showing off her long legs. She seemed familiar and it took me a long time to remember who she was. This woman was a female streamer who became popular on a certain short video platform recently by posting borderline sexy videos.Jane paused for a moment and stopped pushing the door. "Anthony, I've helped you before, but now I

If she cared about my situation and had asked around just a little bit, someone would surely have told her, but she did not do so.Even if she thought I was just hospitalized for stomach problems, her indifference had already completely broken my heart. Her choice in giving her affection to Anthony made me extremely miserable. The most painful part was that even until death, the person I loved with all my heart could not spare a moment to see me.The emergency doctor quickly examined her health records and contacted the nearest emergency department.Jane looked around blankly. "Let me go back. I don't believe it. I want to see Gale. He wouldn't leave me behind."Even though several people held her down, she still managed to pull out the IV tubing. My mother eventually could not stop herself from shouting furiously, "What were you doing all this time? Only now are you looking for him, but he's dead and buried! What are you still fussing about? You want Maya to lose her mother as w

I knew she was waiting for my message. There were times when she had blocked me before too. She occasionally threw a tantrum, and I desperately tried to coax her. However, she still had no idea that I would never text her again. When she got to her front door, she took it out again, annoyance creeping across her face as she checked it. As if with great courage, she typed out a line and clicked send.Jane: [Maya misses her dad. What would you like to eat? I'll bring her over to see you later.]In the elevator, she sang a song. It was Undying Love — the same song she used to love singing at karaoke bars."We believed our love would last forever. She froze in place immediately.Besides my mom, there were also several of my close relatives and friends, as well as company partners.Jane put down her

"My son made dozens of calls before his death but couldn't get through to her. There's no need for her to come over."Jane was indeed extremely busy on the day of my burial. An online store selling halter-top nightgowns and lingerie had Jane's photos displayed on their new product launch page.#Unique Beauty in Imperfection#She stared wide-eyed and double-checked several times before confirming that the photos that became popular overnight were hers.
