Chapter 3

Author: Ao-Ume
Gerald let out a cold laugh. "That's right. Mr. Johnson is only coming because of me. Now, why don't you hurry up and drag this stray dog out already? Make him apologize to me, then throw him out."

In an instant, a group of people surrounded me. I tried to fight back, but I was outnumbered and took several hard hits.

In the scuffle, the sack on my shoulder was knocked to the ground with a loud thud. The heavy sound immediately drew everyone's attention.

Gerald sneered coldly. "You've been carrying that trash bag since you walked in. What's inside? Don't tell me it's just some worthless homegrown potatoes or something?"

As he spoke, he lifted his leg and kicked the bag hard. He screamed in pain, clearly not expecting it to be so solid. He had kicked with full force, nearly wrecking his foot.

A red-haired guy hurried to support Gerald, keeping him from collapsing. But being embarrassed like that only made Gerald angrier. He barked an order for someone to open my woven sack.

Ignoring my resistance, the redhead sneered and yanked it open. Inside, a blinding flash of gold came into view.

"Holy moly! That's a lot of gold!"

"I thought Jeremy was broke. Is this what it means to be 'broke' nowadays?"

"If that's the case, I want to be 'broke' too."

"Looking at Jeremy now, he's actually got presence. He's nothing like the miner Kayleigh described."

Hearing the praise directed at me, Kayleigh's complexion shifted between pale and flushed. Her eyes locked onto the gold as she stammered, "Jeremy, you… Where did you get… this much gold?"

I didn't even spare her a glance. I shoved aside the people holding me, kicked the redhead away, and retied the sack. "You've all seen what's inside the sack. I'm leaving now."

Seeing the envy in everyone's eyes, Gerald's expression darkened. He grabbed the sack, his gaze icy. "Jeremy, where did you get this gold?"

I rolled my eyes at him. "It's none of your business."

"None of my business? Hah!" Gerald suddenly sneered. "You stole it from my family's gold mine, and you're saying it's none of my business?"

I frowned slightly, confused. "What the hell are you talking about? This gold is mine."

Gerald let out a mocking laugh, raising his voice. "Yours? That's hilarious. Where would a broke nobody like you get this much gold? Plus, what a coincidence that our mine just lost a shipment, and suddenly you're rich?"

As soon as he said that, countless hostile gazes turned toward me.

"What proof do you have?"

Gerald smirked. "Kayleigh is my witness!" He then grabbed her and dragged her forward. "Go on, Kayleigh. Tell him. Didn't our mine lose gold?"

All eyes instantly turned to Kayleigh.

Thinking of the kind, bright woman she once was, I couldn't believe she'd lie for him.

But under everyone's gaze, she hardened her heart, shut her eyes, and shouted, "Yes! The mind did lose a shipment of gold."

Mockery and scorn from the crowd flooded my ears incessantly. Just like that, I was branded a thief.

Gerald burst out laughing, slapping Kayleigh hard on the butt. "Good girl," he said, not forgetting to shoot me a provocative look.

A group rushed forward. I couldn't hold them off. Soon, more than a dozen thugs had me pinned to the ground. Gerald crouched down over me and patted my face. "You have no idea who you're going against." As he spoke, he stepped on my face, grinding his shoe into it again and again.

The laughter around me was deafening. Worse still, Kayleigh looked down at me with disgust.

I clenched my teeth, staring at them. "Have you thought about the consequences of laying a hand on me?"

For a split second, the room fell silent. Just as I thought they might hesitate and let me go, laughter erupted all around.

Even Kayleigh looked at me with ridicule. "Jeremy, you're insane. You're just a miner. Even if Gerald beat you to death, there wouldn't be any consequences."

Before I could respond, the door suddenly flew open. "Everyone, stop right there!"

"Jeremy, how could you fall for someone else? I won't allow it! You're doing this on purpose, aren't you? You just want to make me jealous! "No matter how impressive Skye is, she's still just your secretary. What could you possibly see in her? Jeremy, I was wrong. Please, forgive me…"By the end, Kayleigh's eyes were red as tears streamed down her face.I scoffed. "Who do you think you are, comparing yourself to Skye?"Under her stunned gaze, I spoke slowly. "Oh, you didn't know? In Kingsville, it's not just the Johnson family. There's also the Webster family. You don't actually know Skye's identity, do you?"Kayleigh's face turned deathly pale. She lowered her head, muttering to herself, "That's impossible. How can it be… Jeremy, you're just angry that I humiliated you with Gerald earlier, so now, you're humiliating me. It's okay. That was my fault. If it helps you vent, you can do anything you want to me."Whatever fantasy Kayleigh had built in her head, she clung to the belie

"Take a good look at yourself. What do you even have? Your face is average at best. Your figure isn't anything special. You don't compare to Skye in any way. What on earth makes you think I'd choose you?"This time, Kayleigh was completely stunned. Her legs gave out, and she collapsed to the ground. No matter how hard Gerald tried, he couldn't pull her back up.His eyes turned bloodshot. Forgetting Skye was there, he shouted at me, "Jeremy, who the hell are you? What gives you the right to look down on my woman like that?"Before I could answer, the doors opened again. Gerald's father, also the mine's director, Nigel Shaw, walked in. The moment he spotted Skye by the door, his eyes widened. He hurried over to greet her and curry favor.Even when Gerald called out, asking for back up, Nigel ignored him. Finally, Gerald dragged him in front of me, pointing angrily, and barked, "Dad, this is one of your workers. He actually dared to compete with me for a woman. Fire him. I don't ever

Kayleigh seemed completely unaware and continued to tear me down. "Jeremy is just a simp. He clung to me back then, and I was young and naive. I was fooled by him. Don't be fooled by how decent he looks. He's nothing like that. He's poor and dishonest."Everyone chimed in, mocking me and stepping over my dignity just to earn a better impression in front of Skye. But they were destined to be disappointed. In their eyes, Skye was far above everyone else. Yet, she walked straight through the crowd and stopped in front of me. Then, under everyone's stunned gaze, she knelt before me. "Your shoelace is loose." Lowering her head, her slender fingers moved swiftly as she tied my shoelaces.A collective gasp swept through the room. No one could understand why someone as untouchable as Skye would kneel down to tie my shoes.I accepted it calmly. It was nothing unusual. Not because I was lazy, but because during my time at the mine, when I was busy with equipment and had no free hands, Skye

My expression darkened in disgust. I couldn't believe I'd liked a woman like Kayleigh for so long. The engagement was over. That was all I came for. Staying any longer would only make me sick.I turned to leave, but Kayleigh stepped in front of me. "I said you can go, but leave the gold."The greed in her eyes and the entitlement in her tone were as if the gold already belonged to her.I frowned at the people closing in around me. Even if I couldn't walk away unscathed, I'd make sure to settle the score. I dropped the sack from my shoulder and rolled up my sleeves, ready to go all in. Suddenly, a crisp female voice came from the doorway. "What a show of power from the Shaw family! Is this a robbery attempt in broad daylight?"The doors opened, and in walked a striking woman, dressed in a sharply tailored black suit. Every man's eyes were glued to her.The fitted blazer accentuated her slim waist. The top two buttons of her white blouse underneath the blazer were undone, reveali

Chris glanced at the time and spoke with impatience. "Jeremy, it's just some worthless junk. What difference does it make if you take it back or not? Mr. Johnson from Kingsville will be here any minute. A broke loser like you making a scene like this won't look good."Gerald seemed to realize the same thing, but he had no intention of returning the diamond bracelet to me. Before anyone could react, he smashed it hard against the ground. "If I weren't worried about dirtying Mr. Johnson's eyes, I'd really enjoy watching your lies fall apart. "As for this bracelet, it's just cheap trash, like you. And you think you can stand on equal footing with me? Who do you think you are?"The priceless diamond bracelet shattered instantly upon impact. No matter how flawless it looked, glass would definitely break if dropped so hard onto the ground. The next second, Gerald froze in shock.Someone nearby who knew about gemstones muttered in shock, "Oh my God! This… Though the bracelet shattered i

Everyone turned toward the entrance. A sharp, well-dressed middle-aged man walked in.Kayleigh's eyes lit up as she hurried over. "Dad, you're here."The thugs' attention shifted, giving me a chance to push myself up from the ground.Kayleigh's dad, Chris Richards, had been away for years. I had never met him before. Still, I believed elders should be reasonable, so I stepped forward and greeted him. "Hello, Mr. Richards. I'm Jeremy Johnson, the one who was previously engaged to Kayleigh."Now that she's chosen someone else, our engagement is void. I was about to leave, but Gerald Shaw made trouble and had people block my way." I explained the situation in just a few sentences.Gerald snorted, twisting the truth. "You stole gold from our mine. Of course, I couldn't let you walk away."My face was scraped from being dragged on the ground, my clothes torn and disheveled.Chris frowned, his eyes studying me. "If you're the type to steal, then my daughter breaking off the engagement
