Chapter 2

Author: Wooden Log
I dodged Savannah's attempt to grab my phone and dialed 911. Then, I said reproachfully, "You're being too irresponsible with your own body. If you're hurting this badly, there's no way it's just from eating something that's gone bad. You need to go to the hospital!"

Without giving her a chance to refute, I quickly gave the dispatcher our exact location and urged, "Please hurry. The patient is in a lot of pain. There could be complications at any moment."

After I hung up, Savannah started to panic. She grabbed at me, refusing to let me leave. "Even if we're going to the hospital, you have to come with me! Because… because they'll be running all kinds of tests, and I can't go through that alone."

I almost laughed. She wasn't worried about needing someone to accompany her for the tests. She was just worried that if I didn't go with her, she wouldn't be able to set me up properly.

I put on a smile and pretended to comfort her. "You don't have to worry about that. I already texted your parents. They'll meet you at the hospital."

Seeing that I wasn't budging, Savannah forced a strained smile. "No need for that. My stomach doesn't hurt anymore. There's no need to go to the hospital, so just cancel the ambulance. Let's not waste money on that."

I noticed her eyes still darting around. She was obviously cooking up another plan.

Staring at her stomach, I asked, "Are you really not in pain anymore?"

Savannah nodded frantically, forcing a light tone. "Really. I'd never lie to you."

Curious to see what trick she would pull next, I canceled the ambulance.

Sure enough, she immediately said, "Benny, I'll go with you to talk to Ms. Kirkland about your exam admission pass. What if you really can't sit for the SAT tomorrow? I feel terrible about wronging you earlier. I should go along and see if there's anything I can help out with."

I stayed silent for a few seconds before agreeing to it. It looked like Savannah was determined to stick to me today no matter what. Even if I refused, she'd just find another excuse. I figured I might as well let her tag along and find another way to dodge her trap.

There was no way I was letting her ruin my chance at the SAT.

I deliberately walked fast, putting distance between us. Then I texted Raden Gleeson, my best friend.

"Hey pal, help a friend out, will you? Go tell Michael Crowley about how Savannah said her stomach hurt and asked me to take her to the restroom, and make sure you tell him that I refused."

Raden texted back, sounding a bit confused. "Why?"

"It's a long story. I can't explain right now. Just do what I said."

I stressed it again. "This is really important to me."

When Raden saw that, he dropped all his questions. "Alright. I'll get it done."

Minutes later, Savannah's phone rang. A flicker of panic crossed her face. "Benny, I need to step away and take this call for a bit. Can you wait a few minutes?"

I naturally agreed, and only then did Savannah seem reassured enough to walk behind a tree and answer the call.

I crept over quietly and stopped where I could clearly hear her voice.

"Mike, don't worry. I'll make sure I pin this baby on Benson today so he can't take the exam tomorrow. I promise you'll be the top scorer this year!"

My heart sank. So she really was scheming against me for Michael's sake after all.

After pondering it for a while, I sent Raden another message. "Hey, do me another favor."

Then, fighting the urge to vomit, I listened to her sweet-talk Michael for a much longer time. The moment she hung up, I quickly hid and texted her.

"Hey, Sav, Ms. Kirkland said the issue with the exam admission pass has been sorted out. I don't need to go see her anymore, so I'll head home first."

I saw Savannah freeze for a few seconds, then her face twisted with fury as she started calling me.

Two years behind bars had completely stripped Savannah and Michael of their youth, their education, and their futures. The former academic golden boy and the once-sweet girl-next-door had returned from prison as ex-convicts scorned by everyone in town. The most absurd part was that, even after their release, the two of them were still tangled up with each other.Phillip and Shelby, unable to stand the constant gossip and judgment, had long since moved back to their old home in the countryside. With nowhere to go after her release and still hopelessly love-struck, Savannah clung desperately to Michael. But all Michael had left for Savannah was bone-deep hatred. To him, if she hadn't been so stupid, he never would have lost everything and ended up behind bars. She was the one who had personally destroyed the bright, brilliant future that should have been his.Over time, his resentment festered and twisted his mind completely. He began beating and cursing Savannah constantly, nearly

Everyone said that I had pulled off a spectacular comeback. Now, all the top colleges that countless students dreamed of were all actively courting me.So after I applied to the program and college I'd always wanted, I contacted a lawyer and began the process of filing a lawsuit. The court accepted the case and a trial date was quickly scheduled. On the day of the hearing, I got there on the dot. Savannah and Michael, seated at the defendant's table, were a shadow of their former selves. Just half a month in custody had been enough to strip away all their former polish and arrogance. The moment Michael saw me, he dropped straight to his knees, grabbed my pant leg, and burst into tears. "Benson, I was wrong! I shouldn't have schemed against you like that! Please drop the charges! I don't want to go to prison!"But I knew he wasn't truly repentant. He was just scared of what was coming. So, I pulled my leg free and walked to the plaintiff's seat. Before the trial even officially be

Phillip and Shelby pleaded with tears streaming down their faces, their posture low and humble. Seeing me remain silent, Shelby sobbed even harder and scrambled to invoke old ties, trying to appeal to my emotions."Ben, think about it! You and Sav grew up together. You've been childhood friends for over a decade! Can you really bear to watch her get destroyed like this? Please, for the sake of all those years of friendship, help her."Childhood friends? Over a decade of friendship? I found it almost laughable."Yeah, we shared over a decade of friendship. We were childhood friends, no doubt. But when Savannah listened to Michael's instigation and tried to frame me so that I would miss the SAT, did she, for even one second, think about any of that?"Phillip and Shelby froze instantly, unable to utter another word.My tone turned cold. "If I hadn't proven my innocence, it would have been my life that was ruined. So she needs to bear the full consequences of her actions."I paused

Michael and Savannah were still hurling curses at each other as they were being taken away by the police.Raden let out a long breath of relief. "You were right. It was just as you'd guessed."I smiled but said nothing. The moment I realized Savannah was framing me for Michael, I'd already figured out how to get myself out of the situation. Michael was a hypocrite. On the surface, he acted like he respected women. But I had once walked into the restroom and caught him showing videos of himself having sex with girls to other students and bragging arrogantly. I figured he must have recorded something with Savannah too, so I had Raden find a way to get his phone. It turned out that my assumption was right. The students who'd condemned me earlier on now looked at me guiltily. The first to step forward and apologize was Nolan, the same guy who'd led the public condemnation by calling me cold and selfish. "Benson, I'm sorry. I was wrong."When he lifted his head, his eyes held gen

Michael had a point there. So, I turned my gaze to Savannah. If she loved Michael enough to frame me like this, there was no way she could stomach seeing him with other girls.Sure enough, the moment Savannah saw those videos, rage consumed her. She lunged at Michael like a madwoman, crying and screaming, "Michael, you liar! You're nothing but a complete scumbag! Didn't you say I was the only one you love? Why are you messing around with so many other girls behind my back?"Caught off guard, Michael stumbled backward, looking utterly pathetic. He snapped back sharply, "Savannah, what the hell are you babbling about? These videos are fake! They're AI-generated! And I have nothing to do with you! Why are you calling me a scumbag?"But Savannah was a hopeless romantic through and through. When faced with betrayal, all she could think of was to defend her love. "So you're saying those vixens seduced you, right? That makes sense. With how brilliant you are, of course plenty of slut

All eyes were now fixed on the phone Raden held high. The scene on the video was so explicit that it made people blush. Some of them who were more shy even covered their eyes, too embarrassed to keep watching. But the two people caught in the act were unmistakable. The guy was Michael, who had consistently ranked second in the grade and had an excellent reputation at school, and the girl was none other than Savannah, who had just insisted that I was the father of her baby.Judging by the angle, it was pretty obvious that the video was secretly recorded.Seconds later, the crowd erupted with excited chatter. "My goodness! How is this possible?""Wait, so it was Michael, not Benson? We blamed the wrong person!""Does that mean Savannah's baby wasn't Benson's at all? It was Michael's all along? Was she acting this whole time?"A wave of incredulous stares shifted instantly from me to someone at the back of the crowd.I followed their gaze and spotted Michael lurking among the on
